I've known th e answer to this one for over 50 years. In the version Iearned, the riddle was written in a book, and the word was actually used in the riddle, like: Here's a bookkeeper's riddle: What is a word with three consecutive double letters?

I know another word that has three consecutive double letters and well as another two sets of double letters and it is not a compound word, although it is a proper noun: Woolloomooloo: which is a suburb of Sydney, Australia. Russell Crowe and Delta Goodrem live there.
