In my opinion Tweenies is by far the scariest childhood show just because of their eyes and how there’s humans in their world despite them not being humans
I used to be absolutely terrified of the tweenies too. There was always something that felt off about it for toddler me. I remember there was an episode where there was a power cut or something and they were all in the dark and just generally things are scarier in the dark
Last I heard Milo went into a state of depression, after hearing about his best friend committing such a crime.. horrible.. Anyone know what happened to Bella?
Another episode that wasn’t banned, but caused a lot of complaints, was the one where one of the Tweenies put a mop on their head and did a Jimmy Savile impression. It was first broadcast before the Savile scandal, but was later repeated AFTER Operation Yewtree. Whoever authorised the broadcast probably hadn’t even watched the episode all the way through so it was an innocent mistake, but a lot of complaints were made by angry parents - rightly so.
@@elio7610 The BBC were never shy from flogging their old children’s shows to death. My youngest child was watching re-runs of episodes of Balamory that my eldest child watched at the same age 9 years before and my eldest children were watching episodes of Come Outside that were made 15 years previously. Even when I was a child in the late 70s through to the early/mid 80s a large percentage of the shows I was watching were really old - Bagpuss was a popular program made in 1974 but still being shown well into the 80s. Likewise Mr Benn and Finger Bobs were being shown for over a decade. We also still got Camberwick Green in the early 80s, and that was made in 1966! This still happens now. Some of my kids watched ‘In The Night Garden’ when it first came out in 2008 and I understand they’re still repeating the same episodes now on 2024. I think the BBC may have felt, and still feel, that kids programs don’t justify the same budget as adult shows and therefore don’t make as many new ones. Kids outgrow these shows quite quickly so they probably want to get their money’s worth by repeating them ad nausea to as many new successive generations of pre-schoolers as they can before the shows become too dated.
@hannahmartin9705 Favorite Songs. That episode was banned because Max dressed up as the now-disgraced Top of the Pops host Jimmy Savile. After the revelation was made, the BBC-owned channel CBeebies reran that episode accidentally, and the BBC received a sh*t ton of complaints following the incident.
The Ofsted Inspector would probably have a heart attack if he saw the utter state of it. Children being allowed to wander in the kitchens where a knife is left unattended and within easy reach.
Former teaching assistant chiming in: Leaving a knife just lying there unattended in a kids' playgroup like that would be a MASSIVE safeguarding issue, not to mention leaving a CHILD alone. If a kid finds that and hurts themselves, it is 100% the adult's fault, and also vicariously the provider's, because you shouldn't have left it out in the first place. So there's no doubt that Judy's shocked, since the blame is on her.
Be Safe with the Tweenies. More like, Be Negligent Muppets with Max and Judy. In another episode, Judy walks away from a birthday cake with a candle still lit on it and leaves the kids unsupervised around it...the kids try to light a scented candle from said lit birthday candle and it's a miracle none of them got burnt or set the whole playgroup on fire. Another one where the kids are left unsupervised and Fizz wanders into the kitchen and gets bottles of bleach out the cupboard. One where the kids are left with electrical appliances and it's BELLA who has to tell the younger Tweenies not to play with them. There's ANOTHER one where Max goes out in the shed and leaves the kids unsupervised inside. Milo gets himself stuck through the window, and Bella goes to run out the front door. But it's the KIDS who get told off. And they're like, 4 or 5.
I think with the fact that this short ended up being found shows how dedicated the lost media community can be. If you don't give up, you will be able to achieve what you were after - unless it's been confirmed to have been completely lost.
It would've been even funnier if someone did an edit of the (UK) police suddenly running up to Jake with tasers or PAVA sprays and shouting at him to put the knife down after the rest of the Tweenies are scared of Jake's knife waving! lol😂
I remember those chopping boards. The knife slot was a nightmare to clean, and a great place to harbour bacteria and/or little bits of food, which is probably why you never find them these days
Pretty extreme to ban this episode. In the makers defence they were trying to raise awareness of how dangerous certain type of objects are, knifes included.
I wonder if they thought it would make knives seem too appealing to children 😅 They're only told "knives are bad" but they're shown "knives are cool and shiny" so maybe they rethought it and decided not to air it

Some random realizations I had watching this video: - As a child, I was convinced The Tweenies spanned years, instead of just 26 episodes and also that they were at least an hour, not 5 minutes. Shows you how slow time is as a kid LOL. - I also assumed that they all lived together and were related, I DID NOT CLICK THAT IT WAS A PLAYGROUP. I also seemed to have no comprehension of their ages in comparison to mine, like they all seem giant, what do you mean they are TODDLERS? Like, I know obviously they would be, but as a kid, they just seemed like "big kids" to me. - I don't remember Doodles talking, but that's just a foggy memory. This is so dark but unintentionally hilarious. Thanks for the trip down memory lane! "KNIVES!" LMAOOO.
My dad recorded these safety shorts for us, I still have them on DVD somewhere I think. Don't remember this one but I must have a look. For some reason, the one I remember most is about not getting locked in a fridge. He also did voice roles in Legoland (an old PC game similar to RollerCoaster Tycoon, based on the Legoland parks) and also in the first incarnation of that Thomas & Friends arena show, where he voiced Harold the Helicopter.,
My first memories of Justin Fletcher was on a show called Tikkabilla (apparently named after the Hindi word for Hopscotch) - essentially a spiritual successor to the older BBC edutainment show Play School, which ran from 1964 to 1988. On Tikkabilla, Fletcher was one of a rotating cast of hosts (that also included the likes of Simon Davies, Lorna Laidlaw and Beverly Hills) along with a hand-puppet dragon called Tamba. I totally agree the kitchen door should be locked shut for health and safety reasons especially in a play group i know they're teaching kids to not touch knives but I'm glad it was banned
Yeah, like, these kids are really young, the fact the kitchen was there, unlocked, walked into casually by Jake implying it’s not an unusual thing and isn’t considered off limits to them, and yet one of these care staff left that huge ass knife out in the middle of the room within reach of all these kids and THAT somehow isn’t the point here is insane. It would’ve made more sense if he’d commented that he doesn’t usually go in the kitchen or how it’s usually locked, maybe set up something going wrong that distracted whoever was chopping and resulted in the knife being abandoned and the door being unlocked, and Jake going in despite knowing he wasn’t allowed…but as it stands the real issue is them not keeping the knives out of reach of these children. It would’ve been slightly better if they’d just found the thing outside cool cat style than basically implying this place is completely incompetent and then blaming Jake lmao.
I remember this! I think I must have seen it only once, but the whole thing from the play to the chopping board, these bits and pieces are so familiar!
I just rewatched this short yesterday. Never thought I'd hear the phrase "put the knife down" in official Tweenies media. Edit: That bit about the Tweenie Clock reminds me of when I used to have reoccurring nightmares about it randomly showing up in my room and killing me. I don't know what was wrong with three year old me.
1. I never thought I'd hear a line from The Tweenies delivered with such fear. 2. I once had a dream that Thomas The Tank Engine was in my parents bed.
That’s crazy! I was just thinking to myself how I’m 99% sure I did watch this one when I was a kid, but was then doubting myself when he said it was lost media…I hadn’t thought about the episode in years but watching the clips has resurfaced the memory of it 🤯
This was great Adam. Would love to see this as a regular series. Personally I would love to see your take on the snake charmer incident on Catch Phrase. It would be interesting to see, but keep up the great work as always.
That’s a famous episode of Catchphrase. My favourite Catchphrase episode is where the Catchphrase behind the squares was Frostbite and the contestant said Throbbing Ice,
The Tweenies were sooo good. i loved the safe episodes.. my house caught on fire when i was 4.l. i was the only one to see it so i rang for a fire engine and saved the fam by remembering the fire episode and 999 :')
A very difficult lesson to teach, but an important one. I remember my mother teaching me how to keep younger children safe around the house - one of the things was not to let them access the knives in the kitchen. I was getting to be quite a good cook by the time I was 12, but it was important to know how to keep yourself and others safe. If you wanted to take the children's TV characters of the day and teach this lesson, then it would be difficult to find an acceptable way to do it. I have to congratulate the producers for at least trying, even though the result was unfit for use.
I was subjected to this show as my mum remarried and had two more kids, who are now both in their 20s. They used to have this on repeat. Jake with the knife though, anyone would think he was about to slash the place up.
I remember being a little kid and drawing a picture of the Tweenies all standing in a row and getting shot with a single bullet. still makes me laugh to this day :)
I love Tweenies Lore this is so fantastic. Tweenies was my favourite show as a kid, but I recall an episode which literally caused my emetaphobia (I think it was Jake who ate a cooking apple, and threw up on Bella or Fizz’s shoe lol). I ran upstairs crying 😂
So THIS is why we have such an issue with knife crime amongst the youth in the UK! They didn't air this vital educational episode so how could anyone know any better!
This series along with Bob The Builder and Thomas The Tank Engine were my childhood favourites as a kid at the ages between 3-7. I'm glad that I never saw this episode of it's spin-off series as a child in the 2000s.
The Tweenies definitely had some interesting episodes… There were definitely some wild episodes about things like pinching, getting old, becoming an older sibling (this one specifically was a storyline which spanned across like 4 or 5 episodes) and last but certainly not least, racism.
i remember the knife be safe short, only because i happend to have it recorded from the first brodcast, it was aired only once, unlike what u said in the video
I can remember the Tweenies safety shorts, they were some of my favourites. I remember the Jimmy Savile controversy hitting headlines in 2013! I've worked in a nursery and let me tell you if those kids were allowed to wander in the kitchen we'd be shut down! 😅
I remember them going in the kitchen get drinks I know they went there with the adults not sure they ever went alone. Think there was an episode about the washing machine in the kitchen.
I remember the Jimmy Seville controversy too, what makes it real bad was that after it all came out, a few weeks later they shown the episode of the Tweenies where max dressed up as Jimmy savile btw when I was a young kid I always thought he was a bit creepy when watching Jim will fixit must admit I did enjoy the show but I just find Jimmy a bit creepy that all, it was the same with Ralph Harris cartoon club on itv used to love watching that but he wasn't all creepy at all then he turned out he was
I remember the safety episode about scissors but I had no idea there was a knives episode until now. Maybe they banned it because hearing children joyfully scream "KNIVES!!" was too funny to take seriously.
The tweenies ep that stuck with me the most was Bella's bead necklace breaking, for some reason. And I'm sure there was one about eating soup with chopsticks or something lol
4:38 yeah I never saw the safety shorts didn't know about them to a few years ago but I remember the kitchen from the actual show with washing machine. So this playgroup did have a few additional rooms that weren't shown much.
I used to love the tweenies when I was really little, now I think every single episode is nightmare fuel. Also, 'coowEe!! I'm bAck froM tHe deNtiSts!!!' Bro doesn't even have teeth
It's a good idea on paper but I think young kids watching it would have gravitated more towards " WAHEEEY A BIG KNIFE!!" than the actual safety message.

2. I once had a dream that Thomas The Tank Engine was in my parents bed.

The only msg this sends out is that knives are fun 😂
It did actually air once on 26th September 2005 at 8:50am on the CBeebies on BBC Two block.
Hold up
What!?
This would also validate why some people say they remember the short from TV.
*I'm sorry??*
My favourite Catchphrase episode is where the Catchphrase behind the squares was Frostbite and the contestant said Throbbing Ice,
The Tweenies were sooo good. i loved the safe episodes.. my house caught on fire when i was 4.l. i was the only one to see it so i rang for a fire engine and saved the fam by remembering the fire episode and 999 :')
the tweenies tv show saved the day once again
The way jake says knifes kills me 😂
A very difficult lesson to teach, but an important one.
Does Judy think Jake was gonna stab someone? Why's she talking to him like they’re in a standoff? 😂
I was subjected to this show as my mum remarried and had two more kids, who are now both in their 20s. They used to have this on repeat.
Jake with the knife though, anyone would think he was about to slash the place up.
i should be asleep but man this video is cracking me up looool great commentary too
I remember being a little kid and drawing a picture of the Tweenies all standing in a row and getting shot with a single bullet. still makes me laugh to this day :)
"The True King Arthur" brings me back to experiences with Sonic and The Black Knight... Oh god... "Lancelot Returns" was literal HELL.
Just think if they did air the knife short. Knife rates might have been lower.
MIGHT
I was convinced that Milo was voiced by Dave Benson Phillips. He wasn't. But, man he sounded like him.
I know what you mean, very sound alike!
Thank you so much for talking about the banned “Be Safe with The Tweenies” episodes called: Knives!!! 💛🧡💙💜
So THIS is why we have such an issue with knife crime amongst the youth in the UK! They didn't air this vital educational episode so how could anyone know any better!
I cant breathe, there is something too funny about them singing knives
I had a FAT fishtank when I was a kid and all the fish were named after the Tweenies and the Teletubbies!
Yes Adam!! Fizz was absolutely the best Tweenie!
Yes she was!
@@AdamMartynshe was my favourite too
Fizz was the GOAT of the Tweenies! She’s always been my favourite one of the kids. 😊
I remember the episode about pinching. My favourite episode though is Tweenie Clock Stop Shock. This episode scared me a bit though when I was young.
I don't remember an episode about racism, granted it has been a long time.
The episode was called “Why Do People Do Bad Things”. It was a relatively late episode in the show which is probably why it slipped under the radar.
before clicking this i was fully expecting this to be about the jimmy savile episode
Yes kids, make sure you never play with these REALLY COOL, SHINY, SWORD-LIKE OBJECTS! Knives, knives, knives, knives! Love it XD
Remember that episode where Max dressed up as Jimmy saville?
If it was played for laughs, that’d be fine. He was the butt of a joke then, he should be the butt of a joke now.
And they had to apologize for airing it during a rerun rather recently after the whole thing came out. 😵
2:41 God.... I would never imagine Jake saying that! But it is funny lol
i remember the knife be safe short, only because i happend to have it recorded from the first brodcast, it was aired only once, unlike what u said in the video
4:18 You gotta love how Milo sounds like a 35 year old builder explaining council regulations 😂
"What do you got there, Jake?"
"A KNIFE!"
"NO!"
Correct me if I’m wrong but Jake was played by Justin Fletcher so like… Mr Tumble was being all YAY KNIVES
I can remember the Tweenies safety shorts, they were some of my favourites.
I remember the Jimmy Savile controversy hitting headlines in 2013!
I've worked in a nursery and let me tell you if those kids were allowed to wander in the kitchen we'd be shut down! 😅
A very awkward controversy for sure 😬
I remember them going in the kitchen get drinks I know they went there with the adults not sure they ever went alone. Think there was an episode about the washing machine in the kitchen.
I remember the Jimmy Seville controversy too, what makes it real bad was that after it all came out, a few weeks later they shown the episode of the Tweenies where max dressed up as Jimmy savile btw when I was a young kid I always thought he was a bit creepy when watching Jim will fixit must admit I did enjoy the show but I just find Jimmy a bit creepy that all, it was the same with Ralph Harris cartoon club on itv used to love watching that but he wasn't all creepy at all then he turned out he was
This feels like it can be a creepypasta episode
It's like an episode of 'don't hug me I'm scared'
They shouldn't have banned it, many need this message and they're not 3 years old
3:00 you can see judy’s costume exposed 😂😮 very interesting
"Milo's King Arthur, because . . . 😶
😶 . . . of course he is."
🤣🤣🤣💯👌🏻
When I saw the title I thought this was going to be about the Jimmy Savile episode.
Remembering that swords are very big knives.....
i was lowkey expecting this to be the jimmy savile episode
My favourite tweenie as a kid was Milo, because he reminded me of Tinky Winky. Thanks for the memories, Adam!
My pleasure!
Jake be like 'these are MY ends now bruv'
I remember the safety episode about scissors but I had no idea there was a knives episode until now. Maybe they banned it because hearing children joyfully scream "KNIVES!!" was too funny to take seriously.
Remember when Milo just casually did a play about attacking a cripple with a sword?
8:39 KNIVES KNIVES KNIVES KNIVESSSS
I’m only 15 and I have so much nostalgia for this show also doodles the red dog was my favourite character
The tweenies ep that stuck with me the most was Bella's bead necklace breaking, for some reason. And I'm sure there was one about eating soup with chopsticks or something lol
Be Safe with the Tweenies. More like, Be a Negligent Childcare Provision with Max and Judy.
I used to remember watching the Tweenies but I definitely don't remember seeing this out of the ordinary
Yeah I also watch The Tweenies but I never saw these mini safety episodes that where made after the show finish.
Purely negligible by the nursery staff, imagine that on the front page of the daily mirror “ child at nursery holds playmates hostage “
4:38 yeah I never saw the safety shorts didn't know about them to a few years ago but I remember the kitchen from the actual show with washing machine. So this playgroup did have a few additional rooms that weren't shown much.

“Im back from the dentist!” My brother in CHRIST YOU HAVE N O T E E T H
What the hell were they thinking lol just lock the kitchen and put the knives away?? You’re running A PLAYGROUP. Thank god this didn’t air XD
I used to love the tweenies when I was really little, now I think every single episode is nightmare fuel. Also, 'coowEe!! I'm bAck froM tHe deNtiSts!!!' Bro doesn't even have teeth
Oh no he has teeth, they’re not in his mouth. Hope this helps :)
“Knives knives knives knives!” ☠️
Be Careful with knifes.
Safety First.
It's a good idea on paper but I think young kids watching it would have gravitated more towards " WAHEEEY A BIG KNIFE!!" than the actual safety message.
