Welcome to Kingston, Jamaica's crazy capital city. I have wanted to explore this famous island in the Caribbean for years and I am grateful to be able to share this insane experience with you. Thank you for joining me on this wild ride. The people of Jamaica are a lot of fun to be around and have distinct vibe and style that I love. Obviously what the Jamaica faces on a daily basis is hard to witness and all we can do is hope that more stability is possible. Let me know your thoughts below. One love, Nick ✌🏻🇯🇲

This is all political: the different politicians and political parties, imported all the guns (went through Jamaican Customs) to be given to the gangs to be their private armies. Same thing in Haiti too, now this is the result of 50+ years of political corruption! All of the Caribbean is expensive, due to them being on islands, yet Jamaica has more farmland than most.

We can't deny Jamaica has some serious problems that need to be addressed, but it really is a beautiful country with so much vibrant culture and an incredible people of whom the overwhelming majority live peacefully. To any foreign persons watching this who are considering visiting Jamaica, please know you really have nothing to fear.
The type of violence and gang warfare highlighted in this video, as dreadful and tragic as it can be for Jamaicans, I can tell you this is not taking place in areas where a tourist should have any business being. Very rarely does this type of crime effect any foreigners visiting the island. Jamaica is mostly a safe, peaceful and happy place. The island relies heavily on tourism for it's economy, so please if you want to go to JA, go and you will love it! Peace and Love to all my JA people!!

@@6thwatergateplumber It’s not a perfect system or anywhere near perfect for that matter and I understand a lot of money generated from tourism doesn’t go where it is supposed to. At the same time though, we cannot deny that there are a lot of Jamaicans who have jobs because of the tourism industry. People who otherwise may not be able to feed their families in the same way if there was no tourism. Tourism is still a very important industry for JA even the system is rigged.

*Jamaica is generally safe for tourists don’t let this dissuade you!!!*
I worked in the Florida keys and we had Jamaican staff that came every summer to work the season to bring back money for them and their families for the rest of the year back on the island.
Everyone was kind and lovely. Funny too! And we had some US coworkers visit with them and stay with a few of their family and they said it was like paradise. Many people I know have visited the island and they all felt safe.
It’s like any country-including America. Tourist spots are generally safe from violent crime (save pickpocketing). More suburban and non tourist spots are more exposed to violent crime unfortunately. Its like going to Los Angeles and directly going to Compton and seeking out gangs and saying all of LA is unsafe to walk in. As an American I can say I’ve always felt safe in most tourist friendly countries I’ve visited- America is far more dangerous then many other countries around the world.

Your comparison is not really making sense.
While there are plenty of areas in the US with gangs, this seems to be a much larger part in Jamaica.
Of course there are beautiful tourist areas, but so are there in DPRK. This is an extreme comparison I made but the point stands.

Well said , my dear. You can't paint a whole country with a bad brush because some areas are bad. Even the bad areas have good people who are friendly and would keep visitors safe. They take pride in the fact that nothing happened while you were visiting.
I don't like these kinds of youtubers that use the downside of a popular country to increase viewership. Not nice!!

  • @cardoham
    @cardoham 5 месяцев назад +269

Hey man, first time visitor to your channel and I just want to leave my 2 cents. There’s no doubt Jamaica has some serious problems and I think it’s good that you go and talk to the people on the ground and get their stories. The crime is a real problem that needs to be fixed but it’s not often done indiscriminately - it’s often targeted at someone who’s mixed up in something bad. Outside of that I think it’s very misleading not providing full context to your viewers for the points you bring up.
I mean, yes this is Kingston Jamaica but your chosen communities are really a fraction of a small subset of Jamaica and you’re making it the focus of your video to represent the whole, I think it would be honest reporting to declare that. You focused on very small communities in Kingston the average Jamaican never go to, these are the type of places you don’t go unless you’re from there but the video implies this is the situation of the average Kingston resident - see what I’m getting at?
The included 2010 CVM news clip in the video is also not the average response for incidents from the authorities, you made it seem that way. It was actually a one time occurrence known as the Tivoli incursion between the security forces and Gang members. It grew to that scale in response to the gangs assaulting 4 police stations, burning 2 and strongly resisted the extradition request. The gangs surprisingly had heavy artillery including rockets, grenades, armour and more and didn’t hesitate to use any of it to fight. So naturally, the authorities escalated. Another thing is that the residents were warned to evacuate but some didn’t and unfortunately innocents were caught in the crossfire (This explains what the lady said in the recording).
The second place you visited, Riverton City is a landfill for the country’s solid waste and the residents there are essentially occupying captured unregulated land. You failed to declare this because they’re all squatters by definition. With accurate reporting your viewers should’ve known this is land not meant for residential purposes and have an understanding of why there is a lack of adequate drainage, sewage and overall poor living conditions. I think you’re also intentionally being deceitful because you make generalizing statements like “The infrastructure in Kingston is not the best”, and literally directly across the road from Riverton City are 2 communities that do not reflect what you’re describing so how can you even say that? The poor infrastructure is of their own doing and is unique to Riverton residents. So really nothing you’ve reported on reflects the standard living situation of the average Kingston resident but you purport it to be. Why?
Feel free to criticize the Jamaican government, past and present, they’re not perfect and they’ve mishandled a lot of things. But this video is not it, it gives a lot of false and misleading representations.
A much better angle you could’ve taken and report on is why the past and present Governments knowingly turned a blind eye to the squatters developing and capturing unsafe, unsanitary land for 60 years - that’s several generations - and then try to get them out after they’ve invested and developed it this far.
You could also report on what the Tivoli residents do for work, how are they trying to better the community and themselves to better their situation. Is it a welcoming community, what do they think is causing the crime etc..

This guy went to the biggest landfill in the country, didn't even use recent videos, then presented what he compiled as if this is how Jamaica is. I can just imaging what he did to other countries that we don't know about. We would love to hear him come clean with a 100% disclosure of his true intentions. Is he an agent implementing some program from the "UN" or some other NGO? Tell us @IndigoTraveller why are you peddling these lies?

@@gregoway THANK. YOU. These white travelers think they do this ‘in good faith’ all while spreading a dangerous and false narrative about these beautiful countries with rich history and ppl. Once again profiting off of black and brown ppl. Ask yourself why he doesn’t go to Skid Row, Chicago, even Europe. What “truth” is he spreading? There is a huge pattern in all of his videos and yet everyone once again foams at the mouth at another white traveler going in the “slums” of Africa, the Americas and the Caribbean and for what? We have enough of these vids circling the internet.

Yes some parts are have their bad wrap but that’s just like every other country. It's important to recognize that every country has its challenges, and it's a blessing to remain unharmed in any situation. Jamaicans should reconsider allowing intrusive tourism practices, as it can perpetuate harmful stereotypes and exploit local communities. Learning from past experiences can lead to more respectful and sustainable tourism practices.

Fantastic video, such an on the ground in depth look at what life and working in the poorer areas of Kingston is like. After my first trip overseas travelling to a rarely visited and war torn country (Timor-Leste) coming back and seeing these videos really helps me understand on a deeper level the importance. It's so easy to dehumanize these people as it seems so far away and foreign, and videos like these give you such an humanizing look into the real lives. In my newly found experience the people you meet in these places are the nicest and most welcoming. I wouldn’t have had any interest in visiting if it wasn’t for videos like these. It's really important to help society understand how they aren't any different, they've just been dealt a horrible hand and have no options for change.
