Mixed it with water if you want a blue color. Miracle-gro turns it green. Both are 3 to 1 mixtures.

This kinda stuff is fascinating. As an old chemist it fires me up to try other techniques I've seen here and understand, of course the chemistry.
Have you tried other combinations/techniques you can share, such as adding additional elements to the elements already present (listed on the back of the box)? Perhaps there one or two that can make the final result really "pop" or improve adhesion. Of course, other ideas pop into my head but this is already too long.
Great video...clear image and sound. Thank you for reinforcing the need for safety.

Use a little hot water first to dilute the miracle grow crystal so it doesn’t clog the sprayer like that.

What did it look like after you washed it

Dont wash it, you need to spray either a resin, or protective layer ontop of it to make it more permanent

If you want your finish to come out more blue all you have to do is add more Miracle Grow. It's not an exact science.

Wouldn't it be easier to dip the roses instead of using the sprayer?

  • @FranOnTheEdge

I would have prefered to see what happened after you washed those roses. And which method you used to wash them. I have done a few patinas and when you wash some of them most of the green is gone but you do get a different colour. This looks best if you've used crushed crisps as you get shapes from the tiny bits of crisps and the fat content allows the crisps to adhere slightly to the metal. (You call them 'potato chips')

The method you speak of is used for a vinegar patina. Not necessary for this method.

awesome - i pay big $$ for a premade product by rustoleum and the ingredients say "acidic aqueous solution with copper salt": - - vinegar (acidic) and fertilizer (copper salts) - its blue - BINGO!

Clean copper. Wet with water. Sprinkle sea salt lightly or liberally your choice. Place in an airtight chamber like a shoe box etc. with ammonia. The fumes. turns it blue in around 24 hours

I have built a Phonograph using copper, It needs a patina but i would like it darken like a copper penny, The style here is a bit too aggressive as i will be playing records with it, Can you do a video on something akin to Penny Copper?

Hey Jeffrey - trying to use your formula (red wine vinegar and Miracle Gro) to patina a large copper horse weathervane. It is turning out a spotty blue - ugly. Hard to get consistent color on a big piece - any thoughts?

What is the product name you are referring to? Blue Viterol?
I don't think I'll be able to find it in Europe, but maybe I can find the content ratio.
    Thanks in advance!

You know Jeff, if you want to make it Blue Vitrol is just copper sulphate and water. 16 oz weight CuSO4, to 9 oz weight water, but that is probably not what your friends drum holds, you know like the boiled linseed oil you buy at HomeDeathspot has other crap in in that makes it toxic...All you really need to get the finish you are looking for is Sulphuric acid, , you should be able to get that at any NAPA as car battery acid, then the trick is to figure out how much to water it down to balance safety and reaction time...

Thanks for the information, I'll give that a shot the next time an order for patina roses come through :)

      And further extending on that...
It's probably going to be cheaper to check out your plumbing aisle for either "root killer" - which is pure copper sulfate - or sulfuric acid drain cleaner (not as common these days - 100% lye prills seem to be somewhat more common).
Copper sulfate is pretty benign to work with. Both the battery acid (~35% sulfuric acid) and drain cleaner (~92% sulfuric acid) can be a bit more hazardous to work with.
