Great video, thanks! I'll be trying this this year. Question: do climbers tend to produce climbers for offspring and less vigorous rose crosses produce more shrubs or is it back to that unpredictable genetic variability you mentioned?
I don't know that I've tried enough climbers to answer your question adequately. I have grown some open-pollenated seedlings of 'Dortmund' which have been quite compact shrubs. For example, 'Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings' seldom goes over 2 feet tall, whereas 'Dortmund' will easily go 12-15 feet.
