Hi, I work and do finishing on stainless Steel. I think you're about rite. Anyway, start whit a finer finish If it's not it ,pick à coarser grit. Always start with the grit you have in mind.The finer the better. Also, in line finish, they look easy but there hard to do.

I use the Brown scotch brite for the deepest of scratch. And that is wen à finer grit wont do the trick.
