The issue @ 6:25 is the problem that I ALWAYS have with rotobrush. I fix a selection where it lost an edge, but have to keep doing it for every, single, frame. It becomes more time consuming than just animating a mask, and seems to happen for no apparent reason. (Like the shot content can be a consistent talking-head, and Rotobrush has no issue tracking one portion of the clip, while constantly losing edges in another portion that is not appreciably different). This video just proved that they have not fixed my biggest pain point with Rotobrush.
I feel ya on this. I understand that It'll require some manual brushing at times to make the selection cleaner, but even after correcting that "bad area" so many times there's no improvement. You'd at least expect *some* improvement on the frames ahead or before it but nope it continues to make the same mistakes.
Yeah, I remember the good ole days of cringing at the thought of having to roto. But I've been working in Beta for a few months now because of the many updates they're pushing and the speed of the workflow that's possible. Thx for all you do Jake, amazing as always.
i remember how many gigs at the beginning of my career were mostly doing roto but also allowed me to make connections and learn studio workflows. wild!
THIS is what makes me excited about AI advancements. When you can nudge the tools in the right direction and it intuitively picks up the rest (like recognizing your different hand gestures, or the position of the ear as you rotate your head) it will save oodles of time.
Agreed, and this is a great improvement, but after effects is seriously lagging behind (I love the software and I have been using it daily since 2009), especially when compared to runway and stable diffusion. Adobe should really invest into after effects for once. I remain hopeful, as I noticed them going all in on premiere right when it was going to be left behind.
you can use buttons 1 and 2 instead of pageup and pagedown when working with rotobrush. This is much more convenient because you don't have to move your hand from one position to another
Hey Jake! Thanks for the info! One thing I have to mention though: The speed improvement is actually the calculation of the frames! Once you went through all of them, they are all cached anyways, so freezing is not doing much. For an accurate speed test you should only do the first frame and then just click freeze without doing anything else! Teen you can compare quality and speed! Was just working with it the other day! Super powerfull!!
Are you sure that's true? I always get the sense that freezing the propagated frames takes longer than just propagating them in the first place. Otherwise, wouldn't freezing be instant?
The Roto experience has for sure improved. I have to do a lot of small removals in interview footage and B-roll, and I can confirm the workflow has sped up.
@@JakeInMotion Sorry, I meant to reply to @flo.motion 's comment, which was indicating the freeze was not doing much when in fact that is what this is all about.
Yea! I tried yesterday to roto a man playing the bongo drums and gave up. I watched your video and decided to try the Beta version and voila' - success! Thanks for the inspiration. How long does it take until it's available in AE?
I really hope adobe will equip after effects with more ai tools in version 2025, as the competition is becoming fierce. Either that or fix the core functionality. That said I don'y like the direction Adobe is taking with the software, like wasting time in making the sub-par 3D workflow slightly better, while in reality most people will just use other software. I'm especially concerned with the competition rive is causing.
Jake, is your photoshop and illustrator unleashed course still worth purchasing because it's almost 6 years old and the tools have developed alot since then? I'll make my decision on your honest advice. Thanks

Hi jake, I have a question regarding after effects, and i need your perspective about it. The Question is, How far we can go in 2D Animation in after effects? is there any limit? Or we should also learn other 2D Animation softwares for creating our best works?
I don't prefer Windows as an OS over Mac, but I value the upgradability of Windows machines and flexibility with the software and renderers I can use more.

There are indeed a lot of things to keep track of when rotoscoping. I’m still not sure this method is the best for all roto scenarios, but I suppose it can only get better from here?
I'm glad that it's faster, but calling AI isn't really great, because obviously the software can't determine what is background and what is a person the way a person would.
Not exactly the way a person would, but the roto brush is trained on an AI model that can identify objects. community.adobe.com/t5/after-effects-beta-discussions/next-gen-rotobrush-now-available-in-the-after-effects-beta/td-p/13984477
I see your point, but I'm still up to bat for the roto brush 😀. Could you matte out that hair as easily as the refine edge brush does using mask paths? As quickly and with as much refinement control? I can confidently say that I couldn't.
This tool just sucks. Other websites (even tho most of them paid to use) are just so ahead of Adobe when it comes to rotoscoping, it's ridiculous how bad it is and yes, this video just happened to showcase how "not worth the time" this tool is, hate to say it but I'd rather pay for other websites to do them automatically for me and it works a lot better and faster =/

The current improvement in the Beta is reusing the propagated frames in the freeze step and it’s that portion of the process that should be faster.
That's what I tested, isn't it? The time it takes to freeze the propagated frames?

Have you seen anyone with mask pen tool frame by frame separateing subject?
What's your computer specifications?
I personally still get way better results with Roto 2.0 instead of this new 3.0 . The 3.0 is really bad at tracking for me. Anyone else feel this?

How does it speed things up using an image sequence vs a compressed mp4?
I haven't tried an image sequence, but I did convert my clip to a prores mov today and it was identical in the time to freeze.
How do you run te rotobrush backwards? Is there any play backwards or analyze backwards button? I hear something about propagate button
It will propagate in either direction based on the first frame you started on.
