That last bit made me teary-eyed. I'm 30+, 2 months into the hobby, and on the fence about going into my first comp this month (while still not having broken 60s for 3x3), but I'm very hopeful that I'll find a group of likeminded individuals during and after to share the hobby with in my local area.
I am 32 and just bought a speed cube and while it’s only been about a month and I am learning so much… so many new algorithms, I sometimes get frustrated that it feels like it’s taking me longer than ever to solve a cube. Your video just showed that even in your 30s, it is possible… Thank You! The fact that your kids share the love of cubing with you, is a testament to your success.
The reason it’s taking longer could be the speed cube your using. If you don’t already have it, I suggest getting the Moyu RS3 M 2020, it’s only about 15 dollars and is a great budget cube!
@@Speedcuber22 that’s actually the one I am using… I did a lot of research. I think it’s just because I am learning finger tricks, algorithms, F2L… it’s just a lot to process. Especially F2L and PLL… JPERM has been a huge help!
It is about a year since I bough the book "How to solve the cube" for my kid. I did not know it was going to be this great. In the beginning we struggled with learning the beginners methods. My son solved it in 5 minutes, and I was so proud of him. Then I beat him and solved the cube in about 2-3 minutes. That was the last time I beat him. He then solved it in 1,5 minutes and my daughter also solved it faster than me. We started in a local speedcubing club and we got starstruck when on of the world top 30 best cubers are there too. It was incredible to watch him practice his skills. In April we participated in our first competition. I got the last place, but I really loved it. My kids loved it too. Last week we was in our second, and it was the best day of the summer so far. It is not about winning, but all the nice people and all the excitement for a good result. Thank you for all your videos, I really love them❤
"speedcubing is about the people" Bro you really got me crying over the ending to this video. This community really is phenomenal. I am so glad to be able to call you my friend, and thankful for everything you have done for this community in the last 4 years
Incredible story telling! As someone who has always been self conscious of their times, I'm very glad you made this video. It's a lesson that I've had to learn time and time again, but hearing another content creator talk about this issue was very reassuring.
It is not a waste Tingman. You have brought so much happiness and motivation into peoples lives. We do not know what is we would do without you and your family to brighten up our day.
No way!!! We started cubing at around the same time! Congrats on the improvement! I definitely agree that the people and the community is what makes cubing special. I have made so many lifelong friends because of cubing and I'll probably cherish those memories more than the memory of a huge success in a comp. If the community wasn't what it was, I probably would not still be cubing.
I disagree, and strongly at that Increase your expectations When you fail (if you fail) Keep trying until you get it Ironically this is how i figured out my first cube on my own. once that happened for me i applied this rule to everything. Life went a lot better for me from that point on Never lower your expectations because you just end up getting nothing in life or at best LESS IN LIFE
I started speedcubing last year, age 49. Your story inspires me. My first comp left lots of room for improvement, but cubing keeps my brain sharp and I haven't had a hobby this fun in a long time. Skewb is my favorite :)
I learnt to solve a cube when I was 41 which is 4 years ago for me as well and I'm definitely still improving on the events that I practice but going backwards in the events I don't. Actually it's very hard to keep improving in every event, it's easier to focus on your favourite 2-3 events.
I just got into speed cubing a week ago and your videos are a big reason why! Since I'm just starting my journey, I wanna say your videos are a huge inspiration and motivation for me to keep going. Every day I pull up one of your videos or vlogs and just practice with it in the background. Thank you so much for being honest with your experiences!
As a now 35 year old highschool teacher Christian man who’s first comp was the 2018 nationals in Canberra. I have always looked to Tingman as someone with a very similar journey to me. And whilst I have never met you in person, (I don’t get to comps very often) I’ve seen you as an inspiration and have admired your improvement over the years. Mine has been somewhat small and subtle too over the same time given the levels of time and commitment we both can give being fathers and having full time jobs. Thank you sharing your journey throughout the four years through your thoughtful and truly incredible videos!
Wow we have very similar journeys indeed! I guess I’ve spent a lot more time cubing than I normally would’ve, given work and family, since this is my main focus on RUclips now. But it’s weird how improvement can still be so slow or fast at times. Hopefully we’ll get to meet in person one day.
I promise you that Tingman did not pay me to say that! 😂 This video was so amazing and you couldn’t have uploaded it at a better time, I wasn’t able to watch the premier because I was at a comp, and I had some good solves but to be honest I was really disappointed with the majority of my solves but this video really helped remotivate my spirits and remind me of what cubing is really about! And you showed it in a Beautiful way. Thanks for all you have done for us Ming!
Four years ago I was a sub-18 roux solver, now I am a sub-25. What happened? Well I started a PhD and I just started solving less and less to point I was solving the cube once a month. I forgot most of my cmlls, my times got worse and if I couldn’t get a sub 18 solve I would get dissapointed. A couple of weeks ago I decided to retake cubing, re-learned my cmlls and I have managed to get several sub -17 Ao5 but this time I am taking things slowly, do not want to pick bad habits like last time. I wanted to thank you for your videos, I am 31 years old and sometimes I feel that I am already old to practice speedcubing but I take inspiration from your videos and hopefully next year I will go to a comp and improve my times! Thank you Tingman
That last part was especially moving. Although I've only been subscribed to you for a couple days, I love your positivity (and your kids' punishments for you, haha). As a 32 y.o. myself, and a twisty puzzle collector between 2012-2019 who finally decided to learn CFOP and try to become sub-20 (eventually..), this and some of your other videos really inspire me to just try my best and enjoy it, since that's what a hobby is primarily about, and then I will likely see improvements over time. Back in 2019 I was roughly sub-40 using the beginner's method. So my TPS isn't too bad for a beginner I'd say. The main problem is taking that beginner's method out of my head and learn the 120 algorithms for CFOP (a lot of them are sub-algorithms with setup moves of other ones, I know, but still).. And as someone who doesn't have the best memory, this is the most daunting part for me. Besides maybe starting with 2-look OLL/PLL to reduce the algorithms, do you have any tips of effectively learning F2L, OLL, and PLL, or CFOP in general, as a fellow 30+ y.o. cuber? I'd really appreciate it to learn from another 30 y.o. pro. And yes, you are a pro in my eyes, considering you were already sub-20 in your first year. (Perspective is important with all those

@@Tingman Yup... first cube was either Christmas 1979 or (which I think it was) Christmas 1980. I worked out how to do it somewhere in 1981 and during 1981 I had a very lucky solve of 32 sec. Basically it pretty much skipped the last layer as I recall. Back then I used to do the Cube completely differently and UPSIDE down to CFOP. By the end of 1982 I was consistently under 60 sec. I have said this before somewhere on RUclips, I therefore claim an unofficial world record of 32 sec in 1981... considering that the first ratified record set in 1982 was 22 sec! Happy days indeed. These days my F2L is so slow in recognition and my fingers are pretty slow too but have had a lucky sub 15 sec single and average about 50 sec. Yer... I know... frigging slow! Ho hum... but at least I have a pedigree to chat about! All I want for Crimbo is a GAN 13M maglev - as I am not really worried about my two front teeth these days! 😂😂😂😂 Merry Christmas to you and the Tingkids and Tingfam!
I used to cube back in the 80's when it first came out. Picked it up again about 3 or 4 months ago. Using a GAN 12 (GAN 11 was my first cube when I picked it up again). The MoYu Weilong WR Maglev with magnetic core mod is good too if you like heavy cubes. Wish we had these way back when. Average sub 40s now (22s PB full solve, no skips). Learning full OLL (28 to go). I just cube or learn OLL while I'm watching youtube (like now) or any down time. It's fun. Gives a sense of accomplishment at every stage.
I started around the same time as you, used to average about 45s. I'm awful at speed solving now, averaging 2 mins. Hopefully with time things will get better.
I'm 56 and solved the cube in about 3 or 4 weeks when it first came out in the UK. There were no guides, no online solutions or any kind of help in solving the cube. Everything was done with pen, paper and hours of frustration. I recently picked up cubing again for the first time in decades. Although I can still solve the cube, I've forgotten many of the methods I created over 4 decades ago. I average around 2 minutes a solve at the moment, far out of your league, but I'm hoping I can halve that time in the future. I've treated my self to a Gan 356 XS and a Gan 356 i Carry, the XS currently being my favourite. All I need to do now is practice 🙂
I understand the frustration of not improving. I've had to learn to cube just for the fun of it instead of expecting to improve. I practice what i need to get better, and if i improve, great. But if not, I'll still love cubing.
I started learning cubing about 2 months ago October 1st and after a week I got my first 59 second solve using beginners with ru u perm and adjacent corner swap and diagonal corner swap I got an avg of 40 about 2 weeks in and my first sub 30 near the end of that week I got a 17 person best during the end of that period I learned almost all my plls a week after and and then I learned my g perms when I a week after I got a 12.371 pb getting a lucky pll skip I learned learned almost all the olls excluding the dot plls I still have trouble with 2 plls with similar executions and got a recent pb of 12.362 Vitural cubing app During the period of learning the cube I remember I had a Rubik’s cube app from 6 years ago and I saw that there was a vitural cube option when I was averaging 34 it took about 2 weeks to get my first sub 1 minute on the vitural 3x3 cube I had avou 1.3 turning speed because you have to use thumbs to swipe the layers and double layer turns were not possible in the app I used I used u perms and t for most the the first month was when I how to execute beginner method at the time and got my first sub 40 4 days after and 2 weeks I got so close to a sub 30 solve eventually I got a 29 second solve then a 26 then a 23 then to now a lucky pll skip of 15.47 in my vitural cubing Regular cubing I have spent around 166 dollars in cubing I’ve bought a gan 365m gan I 3 tornado v3 then Rs3m 2021 in that order the orders were spanning around a week or so apart and a few days ago I bought a 2x2 4x4 and 5x5 and am currently waiting to receive them I’ve been learning yau on my vitural cube app using the 4x4 option and I currently avg around 3.3 minutes and had a best of 2:13.18 minute solve on that cubing option. I have done over 9 thousand solves on my gan i3 and plan to do more during my journey of cubing best ao5 avg is 16.729
i started cubing since I was 7 it has been 6 years and it was until this year that I got sub 15. Good job for all of this u have done. (btw i cant get a sub 7 pyraminx even in my dreams)
Always say it on ur vids, but u r the most wholesome, not just cubing but any channel of yt! Keep it up!! Love Tingfam ❤❤. Btw, when is the sale on daily puzzles ending?
Sometimes, you just have a bad day on which you can't perform as good as on any other day. Even if you do bad on a single day, it does not mean that you became worse.
You get a lot of bad results then it suddenly comes happens in my first competition. I kept on getting 50 second solves, then I suddenly sub-40’d a solve, I made friends who are twice as fast, and some are slightly faster than me.
Interesting to find out there are more of us who started at 30+. I am 35 and started cubing a bit over 2 years ago. Timing atound 16-17 but not on competition. Frankly speaking it got very demotivating as my progress is nearly meaningless now. After about a year i was 18-19 and after next year just 2 sec of improvement. I admit however i dont cube as much anymore.. partially because of slow or no improvement.. and thia is caused by cubing less so its a snow ball basically. I also never forced myself to go for a competition even tho i wanted to, i usually chickened out eventually. I dont find 35 to be somehow extremely old but it is a bit intimidating seeing on comp 10-20 usually (mostly lower part of this range).
Learning Full oll and pll helped me break the 20 second barrier, and doing a lot of slow solves trying to do f2l as efficiently as possible helped me bring it down to a 13-14 average. The further you lower your times, the slower your progress will be, and the more practice it takes to improve. I used to get intimidated going to comps, but honestly they are so much fun regardless of your times, nobody there is judging you if you're slow
I started cubing 2017 and my 3x3 average at my first comp was about 45sec, now 5 years later my best average at a comp is 22 sec, When you started you where as good as I am now after 5 years xD I hope I can average Sub 15 in another 5 years :)
Hey tingman! I am just about to get a new cube so what do u think is better? The MoYu RS3 M 2020 or MoYu RS3 M Super with the normal core they give. Please help lol
Hi Tingman! May I know how you set up your 11 M Pro? Like which spring compression system, what magnet settings, what number is the blue thing, and what lube you use. Thx!
I already know this is going to be an awesome and wholesome video! 😁 P.S. Day 65 of asking Tingman do a live Cubing Session! (He hasn’t done one in quite a while 😢)
Honestly, This is my 1st year of cubing, and I'm 32. So I feel the pain. Sure, I haven't been cubing as long as you (obviously, lol) but in the last 7ish months I haven't quite gotten to sub 30 just yet, and it's frustrating. But I have to remember between a full time job and a side job, plus occasionally making content online.. Most days Im too tired after work to try and retain a new alg set in the same night. It's taken me a couple months to learn full oll and pll. In fact I still have 3 algs left to go lol. And I see so many people online bragging about only having cubed for a month or 2 and they're already sub 30. But they are probably much younger than me and have a lot more time on their hands. Also my mind is still recovering from many years of.... adversity lets say. Anyway sorry for rambling I just wanted to say you're great, and positive channels like yours help encourage me, in turn keeping me from picking old habits back up. I know you probably won't see this 1 out of 200 comments lol, but You do a lot more good for your audience than you could ever imagine. I hope you continue to cube and post content for many years. I think you're super cool Tingman, and also seem very kind.
Thanks for the thoughtful comment! I started when I was 33 so yes similar boat to you. I appreciate that there is a community of “senior” cubers whose experiences are different from the younger guys but still valid and worth sharing. I also think older people like us have strengths in other areas too
You're welcome! That is true, having more life experience probably helps in a multitude of ways, that and more patience (in most cases lol) will certainly help in persevering through the struggles of learning new things, when chances are available lol.

I understand the frustration of not improving. I've had to learn to cube just for the fun of it instead of expecting to improve. I practice what i need to get better, and if i improve, great. But if not, I'll still love cubing.
I started learning cubing about 2 months ago October 1st and after a week I got my first 59 second solve using beginners with ru u perm and adjacent corner swap and diagonal corner swap I got an avg of 40 about 2 weeks in and my first sub 30 near the end of that week I got a 17 person best during the end of that period I learned almost all my plls a week after and and then I learned my g perms when I a week after I got a 12.371 pb getting a lucky pll skip I learned learned almost all the olls excluding the dot plls I still have trouble with 2 plls with similar executions and got a recent pb of 12.362
Vitural cubing app
During the period of learning the cube I remember I had a Rubik’s cube app from 6 years ago and I saw that there was a vitural cube option when I was averaging 34 it took about 2 weeks to get my first sub 1 minute on the vitural 3x3 cube I had avou 1.3 turning speed because you have to use thumbs to swipe the layers and double layer turns were not possible in the app I used I used u perms and t for most the the first month was when I how to execute beginner method at the time and got my first sub 40 4 days after and 2 weeks I got so close to a sub 30 solve eventually I got a 29 second solve then a 26 then a 23 then to now a lucky pll skip of 15.47 in my vitural cubing
Regular cubing
I have spent around 166 dollars in cubing I’ve bought a gan 365m gan I 3 tornado v3 then Rs3m 2021 in that order the orders were spanning around a week or so apart and a few days ago I bought a 2x2 4x4 and 5x5 and am currently waiting to receive them I’ve been learning yau on my vitural cube app using the 4x4 option and I currently avg around 3.3 minutes and had a best of 2:13.18 minute solve on that cubing option. I have done over 9 thousand solves on my gan i3 and plan to do more during my journey of cubing best ao5 avg is 16.729
Such a wholesome ending there! Love from Scotland!
So exited for this video! I love yout vids Tingman ❤
Thanks Tingman - great video as always - certainly has been an amazing 4 years, glad to count you as a friend.
The best times may still be ahead! ❤
i started cubing since I was 7 it has been 6 years and it was until this year that I got sub 15. Good job for all of this u have done. (btw i cant get a sub 7 pyraminx even in my dreams)
I made it into the vlog!!! I have achieved my life’s main goal!
Always say it on ur vids, but u r the most wholesome, not just cubing but any channel of yt! Keep it up!! Love Tingfam ❤❤. Btw, when is the sale on daily puzzles ending?
Thank you! Monday is the last day of the sale
@@Tingman Thanks!
You have really made me motivated!!! Thanks for spreading wisdom and showing us that everything happens for a reason!!
That advice Felix gave is so true tho. Sometimes something just clicks and all of a sudden your sub 20, after spending months practicing for it
Great vids Tingman!
Beautiful ending. Someone's chopping onions here. Well done on your progress and your friendships.
Absolutely love this ❤
Tingman you’re the best and keep it up💪
A year a go I realised I was horrible,
Now, I am averaging about ten seconds faster at everything(including 2x2 btw)
THANKS TINGMAN!!!!!❤
Awesome video. You put so much effort into these videos and they're awesome.
Thank you 🙏 I sometimes feel like I'm putting too much effort into them and wonder if it's worth it. So I appreciate comments like these.
Ofc it’s worth it! It brings joy to the whole world just watching your vids! Love them!
Good joke club here!!!! Also, love the video, love you guys, keep improving and spreading positivity anywhere you are because people need it.
8:44 best joke ever 😂😂😂
PRIEMERING 3:30 A.M. FOR ME LMAO
Timgman, always thinking on the human side and touching the hearts. Nice!
5:47 when he zoomed in on his scs sweater I got a scs add
i cant wait longer
😭
I used to get intimidated going to comps, but honestly they are so much fun regardless of your times, nobody there is judging you if you're slow
you are amazing Tingman thanks alot for youre content
I'ma be honest it actually makes me so much more comfortable with my times seeing ting(youngman)s first comp times. Not in a bad way btw
tingman 40 years later: "I am now Tingeld!"
tingboy 40 years later: "I am now Tingman II"
The best joke was when Tingboy said "That was a Bad Dad joke". 🤣
wooow the storytelling style is so cool here; im getting documentary vibes
Nice speech at the end!!!! Congratulations
The ending was heartwarming
I guess there's no waste of time when practicing, but only advantages
U R subbed to me
@@Deakytonk yes, what about you?

Tingboy especially ❤ 💙 💜
Hi Tingman! May I know how you set up your 11 M Pro? Like which spring compression system, what magnet settings, what number is the blue thing, and what lube you use. Thx!
If you want him to reply then comment it on a recent vid
Also your kids are great, so much personality!
9:48 She delegated a comp I was at in Ireland. Kinda cool
Good job tingman and the plot twist at the end 😂
Damn, the real improvment was the friends we made along the way
Cool video , i started cubing 6 months ago . Im 25 . I love it
