2:48 "Oh, I love her." Ladies and Gentlemen ... We got him! That's literally everyone's reaction when they hear/see her for the first time. She has such an incredible aura. She's just the coolest.
Fun fact: Phoebe wrote this song about Ryan Adams, whom she was in an abusive relationship with when she was 20. Hence line “You were in a band when I was born”. So glad to see you cover this! She’s one of my absolute favorites.
Phoebe played it to Ryan and was surprised that he didn’t like it 😂. And no, he doesn’t sound English when he sings (coming from an Englishman), but it’s a cool line
Man, seeing you smile through this reminds me so much of how I felt the first time I heard this song and discovered Phoebe Bridgers. Same energy man. As you often say, "She's a real one."
The English accent always makes me laugh - as an Englishman, Ryan Adams never sounds English. Awesome song though - there’s a reason breakup songs are so often the best.
You know I've never understood how bringing up a band he was in when he was younger is really a burn. She chose to be with someone older so naturally that person would have success dating back from around the time she was born. And it can't be a burn that his career peaked when she was born, because Adams only got bigger after Whiskeytown so I've always been puzzled by the line
Michael your choices and enthusisam grips me EVERY time. I am a psychotherapist and I gain insight into the human condition often as you discuss the lyrics and respond to these wonderful musicians. Thank you sir!
I love how he’s like ‘yeah guitar shit whatever yeah it’s 1, 6, 4, 5. Whatever but can we talk about PHOEBE THOUGH’ We’ve all been there bro. Good to see this play out live 😂
Just one other data point demonstrating how cool Phoebe Bridgers is...She named her first album Stranger in the Alps which is a reference to the ridiculous TV edit for the Big Lebowski line “this is what you get when you f$#* a stranger in the ass.” It was changed to “find a stranger in the alps.” She is awesome.
This video made my morning! I love phoebe. She has been my top artist on Spotify for 4 years now. I introduce her to everyone who is willing to listen. Seeing you discover her gave me literal butterflies! I’m subscribing!
dude!! Again, what an absolute joy it is to see that little notification that you've uploaded. Thank you for making these videos, you don't know how much it means to me and so many others.
Hey, if you haven't heard of Courtney Barnett, I would highly suggest her. She's got some songs that are literally poetry put to music. And she does fun guitar stuff too. My personal favorite is "Avant Gardener". Edit: Btw, "Motion Sickness is about Ryan Adams. I feel like that gives quite a bit of weight to the accusations leveed against him.
@@PhilKRichard Yeah, it's just my favorite song from her. It's not necessarily the one he should look at, (though it is more than "just two chords" in the live version). I mostly mentioned it because he seemed to like meaningful lyrics, and that one is one of her most poetic.
Just wanted to say how much I'm enjoying your channel - often you're turning me on to someone, but this time I got to see you react to someone I discovered a while ago and fell in love with. I'm ancient, but Phoebe makes me hopeful for the future of pop music. Love your enthusiasm, Michael!
Fell in love with her music at first listen ! Dunno if you did it but I discovered her with her band "Better Oblivion Community Center" and their song "Dylan Thomas" (who's one of my favorite poet tho), absolutely perfect !
Great video, Phoebe Bridgers is a very special talent! She's heavily inspired by her favourite artist (and mine) Elliott Smith, who was an incredible songwriter, lyricist and guitarist. Phoebe's song "Punisher" from her latest album is about him. If you haven't come across much of his music he's well worth a listen even just from a purely guitar perspective, he was absolutely incredible. He made the complicated sound simple and has some of the most interesting and unexpected chord progressions I've ever heard. Some of his highlights would be "Angeles", "Tomorrow, Tomorrow" (incredible guitar in this one) and "Memory Lane".
Song is about Ryan Adams I believe, lots of good suggestions of other tunes from her to react to but I think you'd enjoy Funeral based on your lyric-driven reaction to this.
This is awesome. John Mayer got me on the Phoebe train around when Stranger in the Alps came out and I haven't looked back. You would have a heck of a time reacting to "I Know The End", and I sure would love to see it.
I believe it's the bassist doing those sweet high harmonies during this live version. She's certainly a talent. Storytelling through lyrics is what songwriting is all about imo. You should check out "End of the affair live on jools Holland" by Ben Howard. Sublime stuff!
Like other commenters below, it was intense for me to watch you going through what I went through late last year when I heard this song, the first Phoebe Bridgers song I had ever listened to. Like you, I was knocked on my ass. I proceeded to obsessively listen to Motion Sickness and ultimately every other song of hers, her collaborations, etc. exclusively for about the next 3 months. She is an incredible songwriter, singer, performer, and this song still shines as one of my favorites of hers and maybe one of my favorite songs ever for its emotional evocativeness. Thanks for sharing your reaction!
Check the album out that she made with Conor Oberst(Better Oblivion Community Center). They’re perfect together. I’m sure you’ve heard Conor’s stuff before but it would be cool to see here.
check out “Dylan Thomas” or “My City” by Better Oblivion Community Center! it’s Phoebe Bridgers and Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes. it’s an incredible album!
Check out her duet with Jackson Browne on HER song "Kyoto", and also with Jackson Browne on HIS video for his new track, "My Cleveland Heart". Incredible stuff! (Still not as mindblowing as the Copycat Killer v of "Savior Complex" on a good sound system or earbuds, though")
old video, but you’ve gotta react to more of her stuff. i know the end, kyoto, any of her songs with the group boygenius (like salt in the wound, or me and my dog) i think you’d really enjoy them
I would like your opinion of "Lake Street Dive" Rachel Price has a wonderful voice and the band is solid... or maybe some old guy like Gary Moore who was a tremendous talent in his day...
Every single song by Phoebe Bridgers is phenomenal. Check out all of her albums, perfect discography IMO. There are very few bands that hold my attention through every song they put out but Phoebe is one of them Phoebe Bridgers Gus Dapperton Movements Noah Gunderson ERRA
Michael: I love her
Everyone: Get in line
i laughed so hard when he was just watching very intently and then forlornly said "oh i love her". a very relatable moment
2:48 "Oh, I love her."
Ladies and Gentlemen ... We got him!
That's literally everyone's reaction when they hear/see her for the first time. She has such an incredible aura. She's just the coolest.
Literally… the word that subtracts 20 points from your IQ,
That’s a fact
"I know the end" Michael, do it. I dare you 😏
Is he ready to cry on camera?
@@user-el5mh3pc5i only the real ones cry on camera, I think Michael's a real one 😄
Me threee 🎶
yes please
Absolutely. My favourite song of 2020
Fun fact: Phoebe wrote this song about Ryan Adams, whom she was in an abusive relationship with when she was 20. Hence line “You were in a band when I was born”. So glad to see you cover this! She’s one of my absolute favorites.
This is true. But does DRA sing with an English Accent? I think it's more of southern twang affectation
@@michaelwtapp listen to Nuclear he definitely sounds British lol
Now she's in a relationship with another 2000s indie star that's 20 years older than her.
@@morganghetti is she really? Who? I thought she’s currently in a relationship with Paul Mescal from Normal People, who’s in his twenties.
Phoebe played it to Ryan and was surprised that he didn’t like it 😂. And no, he doesn’t sound English when he sings (coming from an Englishman), but it’s a cool line
It's impossible not to fall in love with Phoebe Bridgers.
lol watching this dude discover Phoebe is like watching a colourblind person see colour for the first time
Man, seeing you smile through this reminds me so much of how I felt the first time I heard this song and discovered Phoebe Bridgers. Same energy man. As you often say, "She's a real one."
Phoebe is one of those artists that just kills it every time. Chills!
This song is a big burn on Ryan Adams, especially the lyrics, "why do you sing with an english accent" and "you were in a band when I was born."
and he deserves it!
It's too bad he's a creep, love his music
"I faked it every time, but that's alright I can hardly feel anything, I hardly feel anything at all" Big oof.
The English accent always makes me laugh - as an Englishman, Ryan Adams never sounds English. Awesome song though - there’s a reason breakup songs are so often the best.

She's great. Also has a lot of killer side projects like Better Oblivion Community Center & Boygenius. Those are worth checking out
Boygenius Salt in the Wound from KEXP is wonderful and has some great playing from Julien Baker
most heartbreaking song/version and I put that on a little shelf and only listen to it as needed.
Michael your choices and enthusisam grips me EVERY time. I am a psychotherapist and I gain insight into the human condition often as you discuss the lyrics and respond to these wonderful musicians. Thank you sir!
Thanks Ken! We try!
Phoebe Bridgers is heckin fantastic. Everything she does is gold.
I have probably listened to this song four dozen times, but seeing you hear it for the first time is full-body chills. Thank you for everything.
Same! It’s just as good every single time too!
Smoke Signals, punisher, Chinese satellite and I know the end. Please react to those by her she’s amazing!!
I second this! These are all great tracks that will blow your mind!
YES!!!!
If you haven't reviewed it yet she does a dual record with Noah Gundersen. It's Killer/The Sound. Tremendous.
I 2and this comment. Please do their song together!
Nice! My tweed deluxe used to belong to Noah.
Killer + The Sound track is INCREDIBLE
i seeeeccconnnnddd this!
please please please. only thing better than Noah or Phoebe is Noah + Phoebe
You gotta do I Know the End, and you’ve gotta do the studio version.
her songs are so vivid and so ultraspecfic it’s insane i want a reaction to every single song she’s ever done
This is a lesson… proceeds to fall in love with Phoebe. Happened to me too.
I love how he’s like ‘yeah guitar shit whatever yeah it’s 1, 6, 4, 5. Whatever but can we talk about PHOEBE THOUGH’
We’ve all been there bro. Good to see this play out live 😂
omg hes so cute, nice to see someone react to the best artist of our day
The little look you flip to the camera when your signal buffers was just sublime. We all feel ya, Michael - all of us.
Right?!

I like the simple time keeping from the drummer with the basic...slap, slap, slappuh, slap
i’ve always wanted to see a guitar teacher react to phoebe bridgers motion sickness in 4K
"Roll the the windows down" yep,her parents where hip, first time i saw her almost 2yrs ago i said they'll watch for the pretty but stay for the music.
You know it's good when he doesn't pause it 😅
First time I heard this the first chord just punched me right in the face and I loved it
We need more Bridgers
lyrics are so good i've got goosebumps
Motion Sickness is in my top 10 all time. Amazing song.

I'll third the request for Courtney Barnett!
Avant Gardener is great but it's two chords lol.

Courtney did an awesome Tiny Desk concert with Kurt Vile, that I highly encourage people to check out.
There are no words for this, bravo.
Love this song. Anyone else feel like the drive / groove and guitar is so similar to 'One Headlight' by The Wallflowers?
Love & awe in equal measures! Thanks Micheal.
Heyyy, pretty awesome that you did a reaction to this performance, one of my favorite performances of this song from her
Well done Michael. She is really, really good and you are helping to bring her to peoples attention.

Excellent choice. Super groovy tune.
Great song
She's outstanding!
What a nice lil video. As a Phoebe super simp this makes me very happy :)

The song is about Ryan Adams
Try Punisher and Moon Song. Absolutely beautiful harp-like baritone guitar production - and great lyrics again.
moon song wrecks me every time
DO Ben howard's "end of the affaire (Jools Holand) or "Small things (GI:EL)" PLEASE
She puts in the mind of the great songwriter Lucinda Williams, not in sound, but the way she tells the story. Good one. 🤠
I love how he was dancing and actually enjoying it

Ethan Gruska and Harrison Whitford absolutely nail some of the guitar ad libs on Punisher, a very underrated guitar album
