I was cutting 5" blocks of red, white, and blue fabrics today for a Quilt of Valor, and had scraps of fabric leftover. I remembered some very small quilt block patterns I had. I had to stitch a red, white and blue top with my scraps. I get off on a tangent often in my sewing adventures.

At a thrift store, I found about 10 quilt tops that were waiting to be finished or were at different stages of being put together. I could tell they were quality, made by a really talented quilter. There were many other sewers' items, including a very expensive sewing machine and table. I wondered what happened to the seamstress. I couldn't leave them there and have finished several of them and put them in our church craft sale. I wondered if this was "cheating" to say I made them when I only finished them. I felt I did them for the person who started. It brought me joy to have her beautiful quilts being put to use.

Kind of a thrift store story:
When my (all in their 40’s now), Children were under 10-12 years old I sewed a lot of clothes for them… when they were in their late teens… I was about town, shopping and I spied a little girl wearing an skirt & top that I had made. I was impressed the complete set was intact and being worn. It brought me such joy!!❤😅

Thank you for the Happy Holiday pattern. So beautiful!!! About the Thrift Store find, my first thought (being an older grandmother)was someone was working on that and maybe passed away and the children cleaning out her belongings gave it to the Thrift Store, not knowing what to do with it. Someone will truly treasure it when you finish it. I made that same pattern in a much larger size, using my own stash trying to get it cleared out somewhat and truly enjoy it every day! Thank you, Corey, for all of your ideas, creations, and the spirit of sharing those things with us. You are truly inspirational to many quilters! Devonna Tabor

It would be so much fun to know the back story of the quilt! I have donated quilt blocks as well as quilt tops before to one of our local thrift shops...many of ours use all of the proceeds for charities so I don't mind making donations of that sort to them. I know that's not the case everywhere though!

What a find indeed! I don’t find much quilting fabric in Canadian thrift stores, but did go to a charity fabric sale recently and found 3 Glacé charm packs by 3 Sisters and 1 yard of a Mary Engelbreit fabric. I didn’t know she ever designed for Moda, fabric was rolled so I just choose it because it felt nice and I liked the colours. Plus I got about 2 yds of Christmas print by Basic Grey and a 42” of a Halloween stripe by Northcott fabrics! Best sale ever!!!

Love that quilt top, what an incredible find!! This isn't a thrift store find but it could have been. I inherited a very old quilt top from my mom, originally made by a great grandmother, and we don't know when it was made, but based on the era and the fact that it contains flour sack/grain sack fabric, I would say it's most likely from the 1930s or 40s. I wish I could share a photo of it here! I love fabric from that era, with the bright colors and fascinating prints. The quilt top has 80-90 years' worth of grime on it but I'm afraid to wash it! I suppose I might have to try as I really want to honor my great grandmother by completing it and then displaying it on my bed. Anyway, just thought I would share that 😊.

Another great video. I just love watching you talk about anything quilt related. 30 years ago I purchased a quilt top with Sun Bonnet Sue hand appliquéd squares. Sadly I was new to quilting and didn’t know how to fix the couple holes in it, so I never finished it. It got lost when I moved, but now, that I am a more seasoned quilter, the next quilt top I might find, will be finished.

What a find!❤. My favorite was getting a hand pieced, hand quilted pineapple log cabin for 9.99! I don’t think they realized it was hand made. It is very dark, browns and blacks and creams. Not my usual taste, but the hand work is gorgeous and I don’t think it had ever been used.

Thank you Corey for sharing your fabric pulls with us today. I love the spring version of your Happy Holiday Stars quilt, and your Tilda fabric pull. Just the other day I was at my go to quilt shop in Lancaster county. Told my husband I was just there to get some template plastic, no fabric. Yeah, right. They had just gotten in their bolts of Starberry, so I got most of the yardage I need for the Cuddle Up Sampler QAL. And Lo and behold, right on the top of their precut shelves, was a layer cake of TILDA’S 25th Jubilee fabric, with adorable birds and flowers. That came home with me too. I LOVE Starberry, and ordered from their online store what I needed to make the holiday wooly wall hanging.

I did have a wonderful “find” once. It was at a quilt show and an “old” top was hanging in someone’s booth and it literally reached out and grabbed me! 😀 The blocks were tiny rectangles of what I think are 50’s fabrics and a red border had been added of 30’s reproduction fabric. I could not leave it behind, just as you said! So I bought it and a friend hand-quilted it for me with muslin on the back and wool batting. I have LOVED that quilt over the years. I’m careful with it now, as some of those older fabrics are wearing; but I still use it. Those “finds” are just a real gift in our quilting lives, aren’t they! Congratulations on your find!

My favorite find, unfortunately not a quilt, was a $5 travel coffee pot 18 years ago and I still use it when traveling.
Being an Ohio girl, now living out West, I love this block and have just the fabrics for it. Pepper & Flax. It’s still my favorite fabric line of all time and I have tons of it.
Thanks for the pattern. Have a great Memorial 🇺🇸 weekend.

I love the Christmas starberry quilt. And the fabric pull you did for a picnic star quilt was truly amazing. I loved all the fabrics you pulled, especially the gorgeous gingham. I loved the Peachy Keen and the orange gingham together. And what a serendipitous find that quilt top was at the thrift store!! You must have been so surprised to see that and of course, you had to buy it!! It’ll look great all quilted up and I think the spools are such a cute pattern.

One of my best thrift store finds was a set of sampler blocks from a quilt group. I knew it was a quilt group because many were signed. I wasn't sure how to finish it until 2 weeks later when I stopped back in and found a yard of the focal fabric that was in every block. I set the blocks on point and then using the Cutting Corners pieced set in squares directions for the borders I used that one yard to create a border that matched the blocks.

What a Thrift fine. Your husband is totally right, I was thinking the same thing, value in the quilt top. And you found it. The pricing is sew nicely done. Would love to know its story, thus far. The quilt did find the perfect home in which to be completed in. Enjoy your treasure. This quilt needs a label to tell its history. Oh, yes, our eyes are bigger than our time. ❤

Would love to see the Holiday Stars worked up in the bright colors. Love the fabrics you pulled for that. I'm looking forward to the Cali & Co. mystery and seeing the blocks in the Tilda colorway, too. I just recently learned of Tilda and promptly purchased a kit for one of her quilt designs.
I rarely thrift, but when visiting friends in North Carolina last month, we visited an antique mall, and I came home with a 1930's era/ hand appliqued/hand quilted lap-twin size quilt. There's no batting, but as a friend pointed out, that probably makes sense in a warmer climate.
How wonderful that you came across that quilt top. I love the varying block patterns used for the center of the spools.

Hi Corey, I always look forward to your Saturday videos. I appreciate you giving examples of how your fabrics from previous lines co-ordinate with each other.I have a few of your fabric lines including Starberry. I am one that buys the fabric and think about the pattern later, so thanks for the free pattern. That quilt top find was meant for you to purchase. It's amazing that the top was made with your fabric lines and you happen to buy it, that is awesome. I haven't seen any quilting related products in the thrift stores where I'm from (Bermuda). Thanks for sharing.

I usually start with fabric and plan for the quilt later. Even with my business projects...I design the fabric first and then see what it wants to get made into later. =) That approach always works great for me. =)

Not a thrift store find but a yard sale - I found a queen size duvet cover from Pottery Barn - 100% cotton. Very interesting print. They were asking $10 but I asked if they'd take $5 and they said yes. I snapped it up and it made a wonderful backing PLUS leftover used in various other things. The front and back were the same so that was a lot of fabric!!
