  • The Marvels director Nia DaCosta sits down with Collider's own Perri Nemiroff.
During their chat, DaCosta explains how Iron Man 3 influenced her work on The Marvels, discusses what it was like working with Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris and Iman Vellani, and also breaks down her approach to figuring out whether or not to apply notes received during the test screening process.
Hear about that and more in this The Marvels interview!
Here's the official synopsis for the film:
This fall, The Marvels take flight.
Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan, Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol's estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team-up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as "The Marvels."
Marvel Studios' "The Marvels" stars Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, Iman Vellani, Zawe Ashton, Gary Lewis, Park Seo-joon, Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur, Saagar Shaikh, and Samuel L. Jackson.
Nia DaCosta directs with Kevin Feige producing. Louis D'Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Mary Livanos, Jonathan Schwartz and Matthew Jenkins serve as executive producers. The screenplay is by Megan McDonnell, Nia DaCosta, Elissa Karasik and Zeb Wells.

@@jr4android it isn't. The first Iron Man is. Iron Man 3 doesn't hold up. Terrible plot on top of terrible villains on top of Tony Stark having an arc that leads to nowhere is indicative of why The Marvels, which this director said was inspired by IM3, looks like a slightly high-budgeted B-movie on VHS.

@@antona.1327 the first iron man is extremely overrated. it has some strong pacing issues, cringe dated humor, and awful use of a villain. iron man 3 is the only one of the iron man movies that perfectly balances character-driven storytelling with MCU flash and bang. i’m glad the ACTUALLY SUCCESSFUL filmmaker recognizes that and used it for inspiration. please remember you don’t have a quarter of the talent that Nia DaCosta has. you need to relax.

Maybe she should not have did the "Test Screening" with her friends and instead, did it will strangers who are fans of Marvel. This movie was really terrible and the box office numbers prove that. 65% of the audience was men and men don't want this. If you want to make a movie for girls, make a movie about DOLLS, just ask the people at Barbie. The reason "Captain Marvel' did so well is because it came out one month before 'End Game' and we were told it was a must see to understand 'End Game.' The audience didn't like the movie though, it got a below 49% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Why would they give a $300 million dollar budget to someone who had only made 2 movies before this and both were not even good?

Nia has become the latest Disney failure of choosing the wrong director for a potential blockbuster film. It kind of shows that hiring an inexperienced director, one that doesn’t have at least one successful film in the same genre can possibly produce a costly flop. Point in case, the Andrew Stanton experiment with The John Carter movie. Even though he did a great animation movie called WALL·E for Pixar, he had NEVER did a live, action packed sci-fi fantasy film. That was the main reason John Carter failed and the franchise killed.
When will Disney ever learn from it’s mistakes. Looks like the same thing is happening to the potential new Blade movie. Come on, there was a proven formula in Blade 1 and 2, with Wesley Snipes, yet they KNOW better and want to repeat the flop that is called Blade Trinity by casting wokeness in to the story. Such a shame….
