All the major shows and news channels are already syndicated globally, so a player would provide no significant additional benefit.

I'm a Brit living in the USA. I would definitely subscribe to the BBC (or buy a license fee or whatever). I already get BritBox, Acorn, etc. but having to wait a year to watch WILTY ... 😢
I would love to watch and listen to BBC content that isn't available in Germany. I'm not a UK expat, but am a fan of the BBC, and the programming, and what I can gather about the whole British approach to content and TV shows. I'd pay for a BBC service to be available across the globe to watch any BBC show I would like to see.
"I want the BBC work more like American TV," they said, and the monkey's paw curled. As an American, I'd suggest thinking very carefully before changing your TV (or healthcare) to look more like ours.
I'm delighted that you put forward part of the case for the BBC. Politicians kick it around like a football, because they're scared of impartial reporting. The current govt have done their best to "Tory it up" while still complaining that it's biased 🤦♂
The news aside, people forget about dramas with high production values, such as Silent Witness, or anything with David Attenborough. Not to mention the variety of radio output, now enhanced by BBC Sounds.
Yes, the licence fee is a lot of money for some people, but when you work out the daily cost compared to the average monthly Sky subscription, the BBC wins by a country mile. Yes, there's access to many, many channels via Sky, but I don't think many get great viewer numbers.
It's time people stopped being lead by Murdoch, through whatever drivel comes out of the Sun or Times etc, and thought for themselves. Murdoch has his own obvious agenda, and to lose the BBC would be a crying shame.

Yeah, you 100 percent aren't an editor for gogglebox xD. It's honestly really really sad that you go around youtube comment sections pretending to be... and i mean... really. Really. Sad. But, it is usually somebody that looks like you doing things like this. Looking for acceptance and approval in life after having been completely ignored because of appearance. You're kind of like the folk on catfish. Always pretending to be beautiful and successful until they're revealed to be monstrous.
Ralf Little commented that he hates people calling Death in Paradise a 'guilty pleasure'. If we can celebrate other well-made supposedly low culture shows, then this is one of the best. Plots sometimes feel shoe-horned into the format, but production values and cast are always good, and it is both fun and charming.

Maybe they're guilty because it's gone for 10 series, and had, what, 5 or 6 leads? Yet they can never quite seem to find a non-white, European, male to be the lead detective, on an island that is, excluding tourists, 95% Black. Strange that.
Having lived in North America for some time, I would kill to have the BBC again. Its effect on the UK media ecosystem is incredible. News, drama, game shows, and adverts are so much better because of the Beeb. The licence fee is such good value for money.
Brits don’t know how lucky they are. I’m British living in Germany. I cannot describe how awful the TV shows are here. Hospital soaps 🤮 and terrible wooden acting. Everything in English is dubbed rather than subtitled like it is in Holland and Sweden etc. Thank goodness for RUclips
Put the entertainment, news, and natural history output to one side - we also get with the licence fee: the BBC news and sport websites, BBC radio (local and national) and BBC sounds, and the BBC weather app. A lot of us watch a lot less of linear TV, but think about how many BBC resources we all use every day.

It’s not just about how good the BBC is, it’s about the standard it keeps the other channels to. Without the BBC you’ll have non-stop advertising and no programmes that aren’t of interest to the majority. I live in Slovakia and Slovak tv is rubbish because there is no decent standard that it’s held to. You might think you don’t watch the BBC but wait until you don’t have it to see how much you’ll miss it.

I object however to a compulsory tax that I have to pay for a licence that allows me to watch any channel (ITV Ch4 , Ch 5, Dave) even though the cash from that licence only goes to the BBC whose content I barely consume relative to those other channels that I had to pay the licence for
Needing a licence for a TV is dystopian
Swear some people don’t realise just how much the BBC produces aside from linear TV and programmes in general. Just think about the sports websites and radio stations, natural history, the educational resources, weather, podcasts. And then there is the world services, that as a British national I don’t use, but I know the value and soft power that it can have.
Yes, not everyone uses everything at once, but across my lifetime I’ve used BBC resources at every point. People need to look at other countries to see how lucky we are with what we have. Short sightedness again I my opinion.

@@Robutube1 I'm always very sceptical when people say "I never use the BBC!" I'm sure there are people out there who truly never watch/listen to anything produced by the BBC - but the vast majority consume BBC products without ever really thinking about it. It's not just watching linear TV on BBC1-4.
Here in Belgium we had an equivalent of the tv license and we got rid of it over a decade ago, at the time our national (well it's more complicated than tat in our complex structure of a country) it was at the forefront of good television in a very similar way to the BBC. These days, it has become a bastion of reruns, "safe" formats (let's send a cook on a trip around the world), and reboots of old glory. We went from a direct tax for tv and radio to the government deciding how much they allocate from the overal budget. So today with Flemish nationalists in charge of the Flemish government we see "docudramas" softly steering the ship of their political ideals (Think talking about Scottish inventions as British and English inventions as English.)

Yeah we get that here, gladiators may as well be a rerun on ITV. Get rid of the licence fee, channel 4 is fine without it. Their news standards is much better than the BBC
Been following the channel for a while now and mostly kept my mouth shut as I mostly agree with everything you two legends have to say. And that's still the case, but I need to throw in my supporting voice for just a second. For years we (Belgian, more specifically Flemish, by the way) had one of the best public services in the world, that was often compared to BBC standards. It might have been simple as it only had two channels. One was more for the popular market but had some decent show all around, the second was the "cultural" channel with brilliant comedy, news, arthouse movies, etc. For years it was absolutely fantastic but the righter the government started to shift, the less great it got thanks to huge budget cuts. Talent moved to the commercial channels but never really got to prosper there, and shows got dumbed down. The cultural channel has become mostly news and debates on prime time that lead nowhere. We completely moved to the BBC about ten years ago and it's an absolute gem. From great comedy, to drama, to shows you may take for granted like Spring Watch and QI to all the documentaries that are world class. If we could also get a paying iPlayer account that works abroad, I wouldn't think twice.

The one place I do think the BBC could allow advertising is sports coverage. Everytime they show any sport there is masses of advertising all over the screen anyway so why not allow sponsored programming?
George Osborne (Chancellor who made the BBC start paying for the World Service) recently said on his podcast it was all about reaching cuts in the Foreign Office budget. He regrets it now.
Never apologise for passion! It's the passion and the exceptionally well informed opinion that has me hooked. I believe Ireland trades it's national broadcaster with Northern Ireland, but however it happens I've been watching BBC programmes in Ireland since the 70's. It was always streets ahead of our own output. I can't imagine having lost out on shows llike The Good Life, Dracula (1977), Yes, Minister, Yes, Prime Minister, Top of The Pops, The Young Ones, Boys from the Blackstuff, Old Grey Whistle Test, Grange Hill, Horizon.. ..I could just go on and on, having barely made it into the 80's. The Sky at Night, Life on Earth, Film '84, Swap Shop, The Great Egg Race, Record Breakers.. (I can't stop!!)
I'm Irish and the BBC is woven into the fabric of *my* youth. Nothing with such a heritage should be dismissed as outdated and I hope the British public appreciates that. I suspect they do, regardless of media reports to the contrary. I don't always appreciate the output of RTE (and they've had their own problems lately) but it still reflects Ireland back to me in a way that makes the license fee worth paying for. National broadcasters are more than just content farms, they make local content we are genuinely interested to see. Content no streaming service would ever make. And as has been seen with both RTE and the BBC recently, they *can* be held to account. You can only do that if you pay a license fee. Try holding Netflix accountable for your subscription fee because of the dross they waste money on. Good luck with that! :¬)
I am a Brit, living in Ghana for the last 5 years. My regular driver is permanently tuned to the BBC World Service. As he says, it is both quality and trustworthy. I agree.
The ABC in australia is also very good, albeit based on the BBC principle. The ABC managed before the internet was here, to connect EVERY Australian through radio so that someone in western Australia could talk with someone in "the outback", with someone in Brisbane through a moderator on the radio. This was no mean feat back in the day. Also public funded
Indeed. And facing all of the same pressures. Continually being accused of bias one way or the other but still managing to provide a great service to all of us. Interestingly, we don't have licences here. The ABC is funded through taxes, just as with every other public service.

I remember reading about ABC in Australia for the first time when I started watching Please Like Me, a sitcom made in Australia a few years back, and the creator and star of the show talked about how writing a show for ABC means writing a show that's good. Doesn't matter how many people watch it, you just have to worry about the quality, which is the best way to motivate and foster artistic endeavors, really.
National media companies should all be treated like electricity, water, sewage, healthcare, education, and public transit. They're all public services, that everyone should have access to, and they should be funded by taxes.
I'm South African, and the BBC's output makes up a sizable portion of the media I consume. Certainly more than the domestic SABC, which I don't watch at all.
I don't know if British people realize how large Clarkson's Top Gear was - only the the american Office was a rival to that in terms of popularity here.
Richard early in the episode: The only reason other channels produce good stuff is because of what the BBC produces.
Richard later in the episode: The truth is that if a programme isn’t good people won’t watch it.
If anyone is wondering why they never mentioned the elephant in the room when it comes to BBC wasting money (how much they pay Gary Linekar), you only need to look at who is behind Goalhanger podcasts.
The BBC does some very, very good stuff. However, if people watch live TV but do *not* watch BBC then they should not have to pay a licence fee. I have not heard a single good argument for doing this. The threatening letters that TV Licensing sends out are also disgraceful and win the BBC no fans whatsoever.
Richard also says “the BBC makes so much money for the UK….” If this is the case then the license fee is totally unnecessary, the government would fund it and walk away with the profits.
It is hideous to argue that anyone who ever watches live TV should pay what is effectively a £14 per month subscription to a company without the option of ever cancelling even if you stop watching that company’s output.
Go to the USA and watch 5 mins of TV and you will long for the BBC. Years ago we were out there watching a film on TV, they literally minimised the film into the corner of the screen, played a 4 min advert for a non stick baking tray, whilst the film was still playing in the corner. You couldn't watch the film like that so we gave up.
The BBC currently makes about 3.7billion from the licence fee. Netflix makes about 1.5 Billion in the UK.
Making the BBC subscription based would mean massive cut-backs of the BBC.

The fact that charter renewal occupies so much of the BBC's time, for literally years before completion, is a shame. I spent a short time at the BBC during a previous renewal and it hinders every aspect of the BBC during that period.

Very pleased to learn that it's being defended (against the usual suspects) and wondering if the. Great British Public will fall for the same bait & switch for another time. Surely not, I hope. It’s a tough one for me, in our house we don’t consume live television anymore. We pay for RUclips Premium, Disney Plus & Netflix. Radio wise we listen to commercial radio. We still pay a licence fee although I can’t see our house hold continuing paying a licence fee in its current form long term. We are 100% cancelling Sky when it’s out of contract in February.

I know someone who did an early season of Death in Paradise and yes the whole crew hated it after about two months. She loved it, especially since she was French so she had a lot of fun with the locals. I think she said they do two shifts now so the technical crew don’t do the whole run.

I’ve been to Guadeloupe. Never seen Death in Paradise but did visit the town it’s filmed in. We both said we’re glad we’re not acting in this heat, it’s insanely hot there. The town itself is a proper ghost town

Unfortunately when I think BBC I still think of overfunding while harassing people for licence fees. It’ll take a while to change their image I think. Love the podcast though and love the points put across.
I am an American. I get my news from the BBC because I believe it is unbiased. At least in the fact that it is not as biased as American news sources. All of them over here seem to have agendas that are not: 1. Provide unbiased news to the people.

Look at what the bbc did when the pandemic hit... education programs for all ages covering alot of subjects. At a drop of a hat. Only the BBC did that only the BBC could do that. Cbeebies is a standout in my book
I just bought a trilogy of books thanks to Reddit. I fancied reading a fantasy series and looked at Reddit recommendations. Literally the first books mentioned were by Richard Nell (never heard of him) he got a few nots of agreement and then the guy himself chipped in and said he had noticed a blip in sales so popped on to the thread. I liked the cut of his jib and noticed he was on offer on audible. the rest is history.
I wonder if placing a levy on all foreign film production in the UK which goes towards the BBC is a good idea.

The programs produced by the BBC are a huge 'Soft power' tool for the UK internationally.

About celebrity book clubs....
At one stage, Pewdiepie (the RUclipsr with more than 100 million subscribers) had his own, kind of book club in which he was discussing Plato, Aristotle and Nietzche and philosophy in general.
He didn't appear to be pointing people in a specific direction - just recommending that read they read books and think about the ideas.
Did that show any upturn in philosophy books?
If I'm ever tipsy at a party (two rare occurrences these days) I will undoubtedly start talking about Death in Paradise and how
A. It's the best
and
B. How killing off your Lead Detective and having his murder investigated by the Character taking over from them is literally my favourite thing that a murder mystery show has ever done.
I am super fun at parties.
It's kind of like a non sci-fi version of regeneration in Doctor Who.

The BBC has an income of £5 billion per year, is this showing on screen?.
We now get the same programmes churned out each year like clockwork, the majority were devised well over 15 years ago, MasterChef with Greg Wallace is now 20 years old.
These fill most of the schedule, to the point that viewers no longer know what's new and what's repeated, which is deliberate of course.
The BBC should be pushing the envelope with new programming becoming an incubator for new talent but instead it's like white noise, something to put on in the background while people take a breather between box sets..
The crux of the matter is why should people have to pay a £169.50 annual licence fee to the BBC in order that they can watch any live TV on any station?
Peoples consumption of content has changed so much over the last few years that the BBC's current funding model is farcical.

If people watch the BBC then they should pay but how is it fair that people have to pay to watch all live TV channels? There is no defence of this issue. If BBC was subscription then the people who use If can pay, those who don't want the BBC won't need to pay
Amen !!! Love the defence of the BBC. I think it offers up so much valve for money, soft power and growth for the UK. BBC is one of the cornerstones of british culture and one the things US brits should be proud off.

Used to watch the bbc but in the last 3/4 years I’ve pretty much stopped and only watch RUclips if I’m watching tv. Still pay my licence though, but looking in the next few years to probably cancel my licence to be honest.
The first half of this episode seems a lot more serious than usual.
Australian ABC, BBC equivalent, taxpayer funded but we don't have licences. News also well trusted. Long live the BBC!

About 60% of the TV I watch as a 21 Year old is from the BBC. It’s got great drama, cool quiz shows and ‘trustworthy news’. Comedy is a bit lacking but I use RUclips to watch comedy instead.
I really don’t understand why the BBC does local radio. Seems like a complete waste of this ever shrinking pot of license payers money.
when Marina Hyde makes the comparison of "truste" media outlets she makes an silent point of comparing FOX news to Nt, instead of cnn. 10% opaque.
The point for me is not on whether the BBC provide value for money as that's irrelevant, as they either do or they don't and that is based on each individuals personnel preference/opinion.
It's the fact that I don't have a choice on whether I pay for that quality of service and that to me is the crux of the matter, as I have no choice.

in germany we pay about 20% more for the public founded broadcast systrem. I would happily swap it out for what you brits get for your money...
we do get a lot more for it though, loads of radio stations and local tv...we have way more channels
i have watched 0 james bond but a couple of series worth of death in paradise. i also watched a season of a french version of it, with a female detective with kids moving to some french island etc.
Why is it beyond the wit of the BBC to arrange funding ?
I love the BBC, but if it is true that we all watch it, why can't they provide a service that we only receive if we subscribe like Netflix etc. Those that do not want the BBC should not be forced to pay because the BBC pipe it to their homes whether they want it or not.
Surely you can see how bad Netflix has become and how it’s the worst example for a public service broadcaster. The BBC is admired around the world and we’re going to regret destroying it.

Here to say I have not watched one James Bond film. Not even one scene, frankly. Not sorry about it, either. On the other hand, I have watched every Death in Paradise episode, as well as every Beyond Paradise episode.

The BBC owns commercial channels Dave, Gold, W, alibi, yesterday, Eden and drama and the on demand service UKTV Play.
What happens happens to all of the money that’s earned via advertising on those channels seeing as a lot of them simply re-run older BBC shows

Slavish impartiality is the millstone that will, ultimately, drag the BBC down. It means that, in a very many cases, it feels, or rather is obligated, to put up arguments opposing absolute common sense and ethical behaviour in both both the social and political arenas.
Conversely, of course, when the need arises, it can show itself to be extremely polarised in its opinion, to the point of being fawning.
This, especially, applies without question to ‘The Government of the Day’ because of its, current, total reliance on that government’s attitude towards the Licence Fee.
I NEVER watch, or listen to, BBC News, preferring, for instance, the news presented by ITV which, frequently, raises and campaigns over matters of social injustice - child poverty, rented housing and the Post Office scandal spring mind, currently - and, horror of horrors, the newscaster will frequently make their opinion on the relevant matter fairly obvious. The BBC, in the same circumstances, is inclined to go to absurd lengths to assemble the usual suspects to rubbish the, obvious, ethical argument.
This engenders a feeling of sympathy and understanding for the continuing list of horrific acts perpetrated by the ‘Great and the Good’, normally designed to ensure the status quo, including their perceived superiority, is maintained.
It may not be everyone’s accepted view of the nebulous requirement for impartiality, but it makes a lot more sense to me.
Plus: Where, exactly, did the cash come from to fund the BBC’s MANY (private?) commercial ventures, the profits of which are, so usefully, excluded from public view? WHY, ultimately, the Licence Fee, of course… no double standards there , then, eh⁉️

I always trusted BBC News and current affairs programmes, but the complete stifling of any pushback on trans issues has been a shock. Nothing on the WPATH files, Woman's Hour ignoring Helen Joyce and others...it's been a rude awakening.
If everyone loves the BBC why are you so frightened of a subscription funded service? Suerly, we British would flock to subscribe.

However, I do take issue with the idea that money isn’t wasted in attempting to compete for entertainment ratings.
