    Opera is meant to perform that way, in our perspective as a classical singer, we aim for the refinement of our craft. It's nice to geqr some pop singers can sing "der hölle rache" which is the correct title of the song and they popularized it by saying it is the "Queen of the night" which is the chracter in that opera. Pop singers can perform this song, but they cannot imitate the the true style and beauty of this kind music. And classical music is another genre that preserve many centuries from the great minds of that era.

    This is Mozart. This is how he had intended the aria to sound and be. It's part of a story. She's a coloratura soprano. Perhaps the other person you've heard sing, sang it in a different key so that her vocal range could be more manageable for her. Diana Damrau is the epitome of this aria!

  • @jamescopeland8050
    @jamescopeland8050 3 года назад +17

    The song wasn't written with software in mind, it was composed by Mozart for a singer that he did not like, so he intentionally made it difficult in hoping that she wouldn't be able to rise to the challenge - except, she did.
    Notwithstanding, it is one of the most challenging arias that a soprano can face because of how technical and demanding it is. Any soprano will have fear about hitting a high F just once during a live performance, let alone 4 times lol.

    "Too polished" ...
    We have all the bad things we deserve....
    By the way, it's not too polished, playing with no apparent mistakes doesn't mean polished or perfect, there are nuances that makes the parts of the music different, interesting, powerful.
    It's precisely pop music and recorded music in general, stiff, mechanic, redundant boring and weak, which is the opposite to this live performance. Comparing this majestic piece of music, which is constantly shape shifting over itself, changing the arrangement on a couple of themes, going towards a climax, being organic and alive... comparing this, I repeat, with some popular song, which doesn't change anything, it's always the same, perfected by electronic and computing methods is utter nonsense

    Wow thank you, commented about this as well, she's the best for me with this performance. There's a clear difference between classical singing and pop singing. I salute jona for attempting this aria, being a pop singer, but it definitely can't be compared to a classical coloratura soprano who spent years and years of classical singing technique, not everybody can relate as you said, specially in this era, but I believe Jona can achieve that status if she really wants to course herself into this path, but she has to scrap all the years of pop singing technique she acquired, which I believe would be very hard at this point. Mariah Carey was classically trained by her mom who was a lyric soprano, then she opted to go pop, which explains her vocal superiority during her prime. ☝️✌🏻🤟🙏❤🇵🇭😍🥰😘🤩

      Agreed. But as a Mariah Carey fan: Mariah was never classically trained. Her own technique isn't that great: she's a bit of a chest-puller but that doesn't spoil the sound of her amazing voice. It damages it, though. Anyway: She got tips from her mother but her mother hardly ever sat Mariah down to practice. Mariah would sit around as her mother was practicing and started mimicking her mother. Her mom would then tell her how to better reach those notes. When Mariah started picking it up really easy and sometimes, correcting her mother: her mother told her : You think you are good singer but don't think you will ever be as good as me.
      Mariah was never really into Opera but that whole story of her mother training her is not entirely true. Mariah and Patricia Carey have a complicated relationship. Pat was jealous of her own daughter. I read the biography so you'll forgive me for geeking out.😉

    Ohmy, where do i start with this mess of these eumm.. comments (and comparing Diana to..euhmm.. Jona)... ok let’s start with a thank you for reacting to an actual proper Opera (and one of the best ever written, and by one of the best music composer in history, Mozart)
    BUT, whila Jona’s vocal was FANTASTIC (she is indeed coloratura soprano), her execution of this aria was mediocre, and her interpretation was honestly CRAP.
    Queen of the night is written and intended to show a VENGEFUL RAGE of a queen whereby she places the knife into the hand of her daughter in order to kill her rival.
    Go back and watch Jona’s performance again. Mozart is crying and howling in his grave.
    Second of all, Diana’s too polished? I’d argue that, as far as interpretation goes, Sumi Jo’s version was the most polished i heard among all of coloratura soprano. Diana has that edge, She plays with a bit of frills here and there. But compared to Jona, i see what you mean, yes Diana is polished. BUT that’s what an opera singer singing an opera number SHOULD deliver (even tho the aria is performed without the whole opera. E.g Jona’s performance)
    Jona’s voice was so unpolished, opera houses would kindly ask her to pack her bags and try auditioning again next year. I dont know what training Jona had.. but either she was not at her best to deliver an aria, or she just lacks a proper opera training.
    Without further fuming more people, i just have to
    Close with Jona’s voice is fantastic.. But no way at the same level of top professional coloratura soprano. That was indicative of her performance of Queen of The Night.

    "Too polished"? This is perfection, period. Diana Damrau is to many folks, myself included, the best Queen ever.
    You can't look at opera with the same eyes as, say, pop music. In this genre, what you call "robotic perfection" is something we seek, and anyone who has ever dared to pick up an opera music sheet strives to reach such level of polish, cleanliness, and yeah, perfection.
    Now, for a (maybe!) different experience, can you give a shot to Dmitry Hvorostovsky performing the "Largo al factotum", please? It's a fun piece, and I'm sure you'll apreciate it :)

      Opera has a dozen hits that goes around and around. The rest just is dead boring shouting and squeaking tiring your ears. So bad diction you can't understand the lyrics even when sung in native language, man, that's really bad. Btw. Nothing new of interest is produced.

    • @EIizabethGrace
      @EIizabethGrace 3 года назад +2

      @@yogajedi3337 Just out of curiosity, what’s your native language? Cause I can make out every word she sings no problem, and my German isn’t even good at all. As an Italian speaker, I can actually assure you she has excellent diction there as well, despite it being her fourth language. More in general, I very rarely find myself struggling to understand any singer in Italian repertoire, usually without even having to try, and it’s never happened to me with a native speaker. The little English opera I’ve seen is also perfectly intelligible to me. French, which I don’t speak as well, is more difficult when sung by foreigners, but not even remotely enough to make me not get the story if I don’t know it, and super easy to understand when sung by native speakers.
      In terms of everything else, I guess it’s taste. Not sure of why you felt the need to watch a video related to opera and then comment so many times just to let everyone know you pretty much hate this whole genre, but you do you. I’d be curious to know how much opera you’ve actually bothered to listen to, though, before coming to these conclusions. Cause I never stop finding “new” interesting operas and revisiting known ones through different singers and productions.

    • @yogajedi3337
      @yogajedi3337 3 года назад +1

      @@EIizabethGrace You must be joking. Opera houses uses subtitles even in native language. It never struck you why they are doing that. The worst singers can be found in the genre, no doubt. The never ending whining and bleating on the opera stage repels an audience with intact hearing. By the way. The average audience at The met is +60 😂

    • @EIizabethGrace
      @EIizabethGrace 3 года назад

      @@yogajedi3337 I’m pretty sure a lot of it is to help non-native speakers who want to follow the opera in the original language, but aren’t quite comfortable enough to understand an old-timey, poetic, sung version of it. Anyway, I’m speaking for myself: save very rare exceptions, I have absolutely no problem understanding most singers word for word in Italian or English, even foreigners who are singing something I’ve never heard before. Same with native French speakers. My family also understands everything in Italian. It’s not like you mentioning subtitles changes that. I’m also not sure of why the age of the Met’s audience should matter. Not of where you got those statistics, tbh: I’m not American, but the last time I went to the opera there were dozens of people below 30 just in my area, and not because of some event.
      As for the worst singers thing, I must assume you’re trolling. You may not appreciate opera, but to say they’re the worst singers is nonsensical: nearly everyone seems to agree that in terms of technique they’re the best. Have you ever tried listening to an opera singer singing something more in your genre, like a cover or something? Idk, you just sound like you’re trying your hardest to bash opera without having given it much thought at all.

    • @yogajedi3337
      @yogajedi3337 3 года назад +1

      @@EIizabethGrace Opera sopranos are infamous for their bad diction or you must be deaf. Even stars like Sutherland has horrible diction. Of course if you memorised the lyrics you are fooling yourself you are understanding.
      In musicals they don't use subtitles in native language. But in Opera they do. In theatre understanding the lyrics is number one or it's a failure. The reason why its' so hard/impossible understand the lyrics is because opera singers use an unnatural awkward singing technique. You can't sing any contemporary music without sounding just super silly. Males sings so stiff like they got something stuck up in the rear. Sopranos squeaks so loud that you think it's your home alarm system siren which went off. Sopranos, with their never ending over the top vibrato, could work as a siren clearing riots from the streets. If you think the siren and pompous sound is the result of "good" singing technique you need a hearing aid.

    I liked your reaction so much! And the story during this Aria is that the Queen of the Night is telling her daughter she must kill a man named Sarastro, otherwise she would repudiate her as her daughter.
    As for what you said about Damrau being "too perfect" for your liking, Operas are known for giving more structured and almost-too-vocally-perfect performances because as people who study and perform merely classical music for years, they always try to give the most accurate rendition of the original music as possible, which is not the same as a classical crossover performer who (regardless of if they study for years or not), they decide to give different colors and sounds to a classical piece (which is not bad either).

      Julie Ureña I couldn’t agree more. That’s why I don’t want to compare Jona’s and Diana Damrau’s. Both are beautiful. Diana’s performance, however, is as close to divinity as it can be-a celebration of what humans can possibly achieve. Perfect performances remind us of human feat. Imperfect ones remind us that we remain beautiful as humans and our value is never diminished despite our flaws. I think this is what makes art powerful. It can project the extreme ends of human nature.

Rather, they're a demonstration of technical skill, showing off an art, and in many historical cases, about pushing the superiority of an idea, nation, religion etc.

    Opera should be always polished no matter what because you cannot restart when you sing a wrong,lose or too much notes. When you sing too much,lose or wrong note when you're really performing in an opera house you'll receive a boo at the end because its a world class genre of music and its theatre, theatre should always be polished and no mistakes should happen.

      The main problem is their singing style, in the long run, sound pompous and stiff. It's from a different era with other ideals. A modern audience can't relate to what they are trying to say with their music.

    Those runs, done so softly and seamlessly flowing each note together is INSANELY hard. The breath control and precise vowel control needed are ridiculous.

    Not relatable because it's too perfect? The character is a vengeful and villainous queen who is threatening to disown her daughter if she doesn't kill a virtuous and charitable man whose only crime was inspiring the late king such that he made the man benefactor of his will. Like, the queen wants her daughter to _murder_ someone in cold blood because her husband left him all their money for being a nice guy. She's not _supposed_ to be relatable. She's not _supposed_ to feel human. She's supposed to be a wicked and psychotic _monster_ who's happy to exploit her children for her own gain. The disconnect you feel from that character is exactly how you're supposed to feel, which means Diana nailed the performance in every way you can conceive of it. She is Sauron with boobs. The audience is not supposed to relate to Sauron with boobs, and the way you do that is by making the performance (and the piece itself) inhuman, which is exactly what Diana Damrau is.

    No no no no. Opera is not about being relatable. Opera is created as a way to show how perfect the human voice is. How perfect God created the human voice. Opera singers work DECADES to be able to be polished like this. To be able to PROJECT like this. Idk if u noticed but there was not one microphone making her voice louder. The orchestra doesnt hold back either, yet she manages to be so clear, be so loud and yet so controlled. THAT is what Opera is all about. The perfection in the human voice. Everything has to be perfect. Thats what they work on like crazy.

    • @jamescopeland8050
      @jamescopeland8050 3 года назад

      Queen of the night is the character lol. The song is called the magic flute. :) When it says 'mozart; the magic flute - queen of the night aria', what that means is that it is an aria (a solo performance) by the queen of the night (character) performing the magic flute (title of song), composed by mozart.

    • @googygok
      @googygok 3 года назад

      @@jamescopeland8050 Don't worry, I got that, Mr Copeland. The "song" you're referring to is an opera. The aria of the Queen of the Night is but one aria within that three-hour work. There are no songs within an opera but arias. A song would be Die Forelle by Schubert or Der Erlkönig. While these would be referred to as Lieder, the German term. Neither is it a cycle of songs like Die Winterreise (Schubert) or Carmina Burana (Orff). Die Zauberflöte (original German title of The Magic Flute) is very familiar to me, as is the libretto by Schikaneder, its history and its references, having studied in great detail the scenery by Schinkel for this last opera (1791) of Mozart. I merely said previously that he was listening to the Queen of the Night for the first time, actually meaning the Character which he did not know before, neither did he know how it sould be sung or sound. ... Well .. lol to you too, Mr Copeland. Hope I could be of help to you.

      In terms of body mics, I’m pretty sure they’re the norm now for recordings, and you can often see them as well (the production of Semiramide in Pesaro in 2019 comes to mind as one with obviously miked singers). No one is trying to hide them for anything other than aesthetics: they’re good for sound in the context of a recording. As far as I know, they were less widely used in the early 2000s, though, so that’s why I mentioned this may still have been recorded with just non-body mics. Pretty sure there were used, though. Again, not sure of why that would matter.
