Today is the first-ever Chicken Challenge on BBQ iT! To start it off, I thought a beer-can-chicken on the Weber 26 versus the PBC would be an awesome test. It was. The Pit Barrel Cookers have been around for almost a decade now, and its popularity is growing. I simply love the product made by Noah Glanville and his wife. It's a family run business with a great story, so check out the link below!
The Weber 26 is also one of my favorite cookers! So this is a battle of 2 of the most versatile cookers I own.
THE COOK:
On the Weber, basically, start with both vents wide open.
Char logs, (or whatever coals you have) are set to one side, ala "offset" style. Dump a half chimney of coals on one side of Weber and allow to come up to temp. Once 325 F. or 162 C., you're ready to add the wood for smoke flavor. In this case, I'm using Pecan chunks, and Apple chips.
On the PIT BARREL COOKER
start with a basket full of coals, but leave about a 1/5th of space for the hot coals that start the cooker. Once you dump a 1/2 basket or so, drop the PBC basket in. Start with both rods in place, and the bottom vent fully open. You'll cut this back once it's up to temp.
When you hit approx. 300-325 F. or 149-162 C. you're ready to add the wood of choice! Again, the B&B Pecan is amazing, and he B&B Apple adds such a sweet touch!
Cook both birds until they hit 160-165 F or 71-74 C. and let them rest for 20-25 minutes.
DO NOT SKIP THE RESTING PART!!!! TRUST ME!!!
A huge thanks to my homie JJ for coming in and shooting this week!! He's an awesome DP, and homie! Love yo brotha!

The Pit Barrel is undefeated for Chicken and Ribs IMO.
AAAAMEN! Thanks for watching!! #BBQiT
You guys haven’t tried a tandoor oven yet. Should be on your list.
Yes Craig and JJ, I just recently purchased my Pitbarrel less than a week ago and have not used it yet..And my first cooked I decided to do a whole chicken cut up half chicken but I bought a salmon today and decided to smoke it tomorrow along with some shrimp with rosemary.. but watching this video I feel so confident that I won’t be disappointed with my new pitbarrel I want to be talking about that yum yum like you guys thanks for the pit barrel vs weber kettle challenge..
Been anxiously waiting for this one, thanks for all your hard work!
Brandon T it was a great idea for a video. Thanks for suggesting it!
Hey, thanks Brandon! Thanks for watching!! #BBQiT
those char logs are slick. never seen those before. Glad i watched, great vid!
Great showdown! I love my PBC! The hinged grate on that is actually a trap door, when you flip it so you can use the grate on one side and hang meat through the trap door on the other.
Yep, I use it like that all the time. In the next video, I show just that. I've been down w back surgery, so back at it soonF! Thanks for watching! #BBQiT
Should do a side by side comparison of the PBC vs Weber Smokey Mountain.
Randy Carlson U got it!!
@@BBQiT When you do the comparison, you should leave the waterpan out of the WSM. I have been cooking chicken like this on my 18.5 and it is phenomenal. I've hung using a Hunsaker hanging rack and laid it flat on the top grate.
The wsm with the gateway rack is awesome. No need to buy a barrel.
Do you use those logs on all your PBC cooks?.....how do they maintain a controlled temp....and how long a burn can you get?
Great comparison vid. I've never tried a PBC, but now I may need to pick one up.
My PBC nails chicken and pork ribs every time. I love my 22” Weber for all my short cooks. Great comparison!
Agreed on all that Rich!
Love my pbc and my kettle lol. Great videos. Thank you!!
Love it! So man dudes in here say the same, PBC and kettles!!! Thanks for watching! #BBQiT
I’ve been following you for only a short time now but your stuff is right up there with Chef Tom at All Things BBQ and Malcolm Reed. Great in front of the camera too.... awesome work on those chickens
Thanks a ton for that Mark! I'll keep griding because those are great youtubers for sure!!
Great video as always !!!
Thanks CnS BBQ!
Epic beard, epic BBQ, epic channel!
But he's fat 😭.
Picked up a PBC in June. LOVE IT! Gonna need to try those logs for fuel.
Sweeet! Thanks for watching! #BBQiT
I didn't know there was such a thing as charcoal porn until I discovered this channel. These dudes freaking love charcoal, lol.
drat_and_blast LMFAOoofff!
drat_and_blast who doesn’t
You can't beat the PBC!! It's my go to cooker every time. The more I use it the more I fall in love with it.
Same here, same here!
Weber Smokey Mountain beats the pbc, every time. The Weber kettle is much more versatile than the pbc.
Where did you get that beer stand from
I have watched so many videos where the pit barrel cooker out smokes other cookers much more often then it doesnt. Thanks for sharing. I gotta add a Pit Barrel.
Looks so tender and juicy!! Running to try it at my weber.
Do it!!!
Awesome video.
Another poster got me curious about how wide a temperature range you can cook with (consistent heat) using the competition and regular charcoal.
Maybe a demo in the future? 😳
Robert Pruitt I likey!
Craig, I have the junior version of the Pit Barrel for two persons it’s just right. 1- Did you have a lot of coals left after doing the chicken? 2- I only use lump coal so there are no chemicals. I spoke to the folks at PBC and they said that lump tends to burn hot vs brickets. Mine ran hot (Royal Oak) much like yours and I was expecting it to be dry. This was a RibEye roast and it was perfect. Next I have try the rubs you used. Good video. I have smoke picanha steaks steaks twice both were amazing with only Salt, Pepper and Garlic powder. Oh I learned something new about smoking and oil thanks. Kevin
How many chicken can you smoke in the pbc?
Been watching since you did your charcoal comparison vid. Another great vid. I hang my chicken with the legs closer to the charcoal so I don't dry out the white meat.
Yea, I ending up re-hanging that bird actually. But man, every time they seem to come out perfect. Letting them rest at least 20 min is sooooo key!
Great comparison! I have looked for a beer can chicken holder that holds the beer, so I don’t have to mess with the can. All that I have researched seem cheaply made. Which one did you use on your Weber, and is it of good quality? If so, who did you buy it from?
Green Egg makes some nice Beer Can Chicken holders as well as Turkey ones.
I have the Turkey one and used if for a Beer Can Turkey last year for Thanksgiving. Worked great.
Love the channel killer recipe!!!
Did you try? Thanks for watching! #BBQiT
Just got my bag of char logs yesterday. Threw a few on a rotisserie I was doing. Burned great. Can’t wait to do a slow cook with them.
NIce, let me know how the slow cook went! Thanks for watching! #BBQiT
BBQ iT went great. Really impressed with both slow cooks and searing as well. Price is great for 30 lbs
That idea for a binder, the asian stuff, awesome! Did you know their peppers are grown here in Oxnard CA?
Yes n Yes!
how would you smoke a brisket in the pit barrel?
It comes with a grate
Haven't found those char logs yet but can't wait to try them
Acehardware.com search B&B Charcoal
@@BBQiT do you like it more than lump. I use lump for smoking 250 to 275
I've always thought how do you know if there is enough headroom for the beer can chicken under the weber lid
They usually fit! But it's close!
Form a piece of aluminum foil over the beer can holder like it’s your chicken. Put the lid on. The aluminum will crush down to the available room.
If you are worried about head room for the chicken, you can also put that stand on the charcoal grate.
On the Weber the chicken was breast-up and on the Pit Barrel, breast-down. I believe the PB would have been even moister with the legs down since drums radiate direct heat. I use a Bronco but the thermal fundamentals are the same. Subbed.
Nice I did that challenge at home last year, and yes the barrel had better flavor then beer can .. Now I'm hungry.. From watching this video
Go eat some PBC chicken!!
thank you!!!!!!!!!!!
Did your beer can pan shield out some smoke? Maybe just a beer can
Awesome video and great beard man!
Hey now Beard fan!!! You rock! Thank you as well for watching!! If ya can, hit subscribe and click the bell, and like when ya like. It helps me get my videos in rotation!
Now that's some good looking chicken!
give it a go! Thanks for watching! #BBQiT
Great looking chicken brother!
Hey, thanks brotha!!!
Flawed comparison. Beer can places more moisture into the smoker and prevents a crispier skin. Pit barrel is directly over coals and allows for a crisper skin. Both look good but not a fair comparison.
though i largely agree with you, the pbc cooks with convection heating, not direct heat. my apologies for being "that guy."
Chris Sandoval LOL someone has to be that guy 👍🏻
DixeyNormis Not flawed, it is what it is. 2 styles, 2 cookers, 1 winner. It’s not an apples to apples battle.
@@BBQiT Well if you but it that way I have to agree. I would still eat either one lol
@@BBQiT doing two different cooks two different ways isn't a battle at all. it's just some random guy doing random shit and posting it online. always interesting to see how folk do things, but one person cooking isn't a "challenge."
Nice
Dude, the smokey mountain with the hanger accessory vs the pit barrel
Have you done a Pit Barrel vs. WSM both hanging CHX?
I have not...yet!!! Will be doing one though!! Thanks for watching!! And thanks for the Sub!!
Odd question on the B&B Competitions Logs.... Could you cut them down to smaller pieces somehow? Just curious. Thanks.
Gracebeliever077 probably crack them with a hammer.
@@akbychoice OK Thanks.
If you have a jig saw, a fine tooth blade should cut them pretty cleanly.
A more coarse blade "should" work. But it's possible it could shatter the charcoal.
Mind if I ask why you would want to shorten them?
@@lordgarion514 Considering they burn hot, as he stated, I wonder if smaller pieces could give better control.
@@Gracebeliever077
I suppose it would, but TBH, adjusting the damper probably gives you a wider temperature range than adding or removing even an entire piece.
Think I'll suggest a demonstration showing how wide a range you can get using the dampers.
Pit barell is a rib and chicken cooking machine !!! Great comparison video bro
It's the best at those man, the best! Thanks for watching! #BBQiT
I really like smoking with the Weber. I’m getting a pot barrel tomorrow. I can’t wait to try it out
Actually, here in Texas, barrel smokers have been around for decades, but mostly horizontal style. That is one is the fire box, and a second one above as the smoker. set your chimneys on opposite sides, and off you go.
Indeed. Vertical has become a rage lately!
yes, sir. off set smokers have definitely been around longer than barrel smokers. when it comes time to cook though, they are two very different animals.
Lol having used both I already know how this will turn out.
sorry to be offtopic but does anyone know of a way to log back into an instagram account?
I stupidly forgot my account password. I would appreciate any tips you can offer me
@Terry Kyng Instablaster :)
Yup PBC rocks it for sure, but I still love my kettles!
every tool for its job, sir. no doubt.
So true, same here! Thanks for watching! #BBQiT
Pit Barrel, all the way!
You inspired me to do a beer can chicken with that sriracha rub on my ugly drum tonight!
How did it go BBQ man? Thanks for watching! #BBQiT
@@BBQiT Bomb Diggidy!!!
I’ve had no problem having smoke penetrate olive oil... REALLY !! lol funny “
Geuss I need me a pit barrel👍👍
DO IT!
I think you'd get the same effect by letting the Weber 26" chicken cook OVER the coals and not on the side away from the coals. The intense flavor comes from juice dripping on the burning coals and smoking the meat more intensely. That is my take and I have both cookers. Plus the Pit Barrel runs hotter in the beginning of the cook which ads another variable not spoken for here. But good vid, I'd eat both of them!
Ur the best
John Seidle Thanks bro!
Thanksgiving turkey on the PBC???
AHA!!!! I may just hang one this weekend!!
Pit barrel chicken probably tastes better because of the juice falling on the coals, vaporizing and basting the chicken with that flavor...?
Ya pretty much nailed it! Yep!
That beard is majestic AF
With all of that real estate you could have done beer can vs spatchcock
You can’t call it beer can chicken without beer in the recipe. The Weber had juices evaporating from the chicken itself. The pit barrel has full on smoke the entire cook. I’m not sure which one I would choose as the winner
Did you not watch the video?? He clearly used beer. Specifically Corona.
Remember, if you to keep your Texas based subscribers, it is not “ pee can “ ... it’s a “ pa-kahn “ tree , and originates most likely in Texas ... Official state tree.
I grew up in VA, we say peeeeecan. Just like a can of coke, not a cahn of coke! Thanks for watching! #BBQiT
@@BBQiT Agreed. Nobody says cahn of beer. Peeeecan it is. Case closed.
sir-ach-ee
Sirachi? Umm....
LOL, I know I know, I've always said it that way!
Sponsor much? this is more of a commercial for B&B than a cook off. Overall good review but can't subscribe cause it is to biased towards one brand, at least loose the hat. I will keep checking in though. Good luck with your channel.
bercoty Well yes. I just got sponsored by them, so I did an all out B&B product test. I’ve never tried the rubs before, and honestly they were fantastic! The episodes wont be so heavy sponsor related.
B&B Smells weird to me.
I've tried 3 times from different stores and it just smells terrible
