I stumbled over Wim Hof late December 2020 through Jordan's channel, when Mikaela and Jordan was breathing together (Vim on link). I tested it and it was a nightmare 1st time but continued nevertheless everyday and added cold showers at new year. This has changed my life. Diagnosed with ptsd and panic syndrome since 1999 I've tried a lot of medications. In January I phased out benzodiazepam 100%, started every day with breathing exercise. Went from 1x to 90 seconds to a set of 4 with holding breath for 60-90-120-150 seconds. In a month. In February I stopped taking my stomach medication - in 2015 they said it was chronic and I had to have full dose the rest of my life. Now five months later I am still without these medications and only take a minimum of SSRI. If someone would have told me this before Christmas I would not have believed it. I am not connected to Vim in any way and not paid to write this, I just hope ppl will find a way to feel better and cope with life and every day, to me it have changed my life. All the love /Richard, Sweden

You need to learn to revel in the sensation of the cold, I’ve been doing it since November. First I shower hot until I’m feeling a bit hot and then I take a couple of breaths and turn it all the way to cold in one go. I can’t imagine missing this daily routine now. I connects me to my body but also to something deeper. It’s a cleansing, a reminder that we’re living too comfortable lives and a reminder that indeed we are alive. Then the blood starts flowing and the oxygen reaches those nooks and crannies, it’s a blessing. Keep it up doc! Embrace the discomfort and before you know it, you’ll start to enjoy it. I start the cold part with my head and neck, hands, arms and armpits and work my way down and around making sure to really get a first decent cooling off. After that I go back to the head and repent the whole thing a few times. I stay for as long as I need to get cool enough that the water doesn’t feel cold at all and I feel warm at the same time. I can now totally relax, no tensing up of the muscles or constricted breathing as an effect of the tension. Maybe Canada’s tap water is colder than ours in the Netherlands but stay the course and you’ll get there!

If you're in some sort of pain (or serious discomfort) when taking cold showers, I think you might be doing it wrong. I get into the shower with luke warm water and then I slowly decrease the temperature until I get a refreshed feeling sweeping over my body, it can be described as a little rush. I keep decreasing until I am on the edge of being uncomfortable, and stay there for a while. The next day my cold tolerances will have increased, and I can go even colder, etc. I started taking cold showers because of Wim Hof, but I quickly realized that getting to the coldest of temperatures was going to be a long process. Be patient.

"Focus on the pain" that is the key. If you try to run from the cold shower, it will only feel cold and painful, but if you are able to get yourself to just feel the cold, and know that it is not hurting you, and just face it and relax as much as that is possible, that is where the key is.

But, Wim, man, you are a hero because you brought that to the general public.

The very thought of even going through convolutions made me hurt internally and caused me to clamp up and convuls. This method has severed the connection between my mential state and the convulsions. It's amazing the peace I feel now. It used to feel like stinging jabbing with knives in my heart. Now when I think of it I feel nothing and it weirds me out sometimes bcs I just expect the convulsions but it's nothing now. It is possible because it happened to me with a tooth ache. I had just vomited because of it. It was unbearable, and left with no alternatives, I decided out of desperation to concentrate intensely on the pain itself. I had heard of this before. Well, I actually saw, at least in my mind, the pain itself. I then concentrated on this image and became a sort of observer of my own pain, and without realizing it, the pain began to subside. I can't say how long this went on, because I basically passed out/went to sleep, there on the floor of the bathroom, leaning against the tub. When I woke, the pain was gone. 100% true.

This is totally true. I once had dental surgery done without anesthetic (because my father also did it once, I was told) and my strategy was to really focus on the pain. If you do that its not pain anymore, its a sensation that takes all kinds of forms but you know what it is. Also timing the cold shower 30 seconds is not what its about, its about getting comfortable with the cold. We have ice cold water from our mains most of the time, if you just pay attention to what happens and keep going for at least 10 minutes you go through cold, feeling like its hot, cold again but pleasant. The sensation is the heat flow through the skin, its not the temperature, so if your inner body is hot and the water is cold, you feel the flow, if your skin gets cold on the outside you feel the heat flow out (warm sensation), and when it all cools down (and numbs a bit) you don't care anymore. Tim's body is already upregulated to deal with the cold, its a signal for cells to go into self repair mode. The same with heat. I wonder if it is as good for muscles, its was tried on marathonners but it did not have much benefit.

Jordan do More than 30 seconds. The first 30 seconds is the worst you gotta push past that and you’ll reach a point where it’s ok even invigorating. Otherwise you’re just getting the bad experience without the good experience.
    Deep breaths.
    * Also an initial attitude of fierceness, of wildness, of battle works well to get you past that first 30 seconds or so.

Spot on. I started after Jordan's interview with Hoff. I'm in my 60 year and II was in pain and quite worried about a prognosis of a large lump on my neck. After 2sessions of breath holding I go for a shower, I really want to runaway as JP says. However using the attitide you suggest I push on to 2 mins and then nearly instantaneous my cold pain dramatically diminished and I finish at 4mins. I don't know the significance of 2mins but it's as if a switch turns on. It's one of the most exhille rating feelings I've experienced and do this twice per week. For fun I wanted to test a theory. I concentrated reciting a well known prayer of about 10 lines, couldn't get past the 4th line. As time went by it improved to now, with concentration I finish no bother. I don't think it's anything spiritual however I believe it may increaseit dopamine as it practically gave me a benchmark and mile stone for progress ...ref Dr Andrew Huberman

@Brett M ok but I think you’re still making some judgments here. And maybe you don’t know what he’s been through (and going through) but it’s seriously severe. I don’t disagree with pushing through, that’s what I said in my original comment and I would hope he could battle through it but it is possible even likely that it is more painful for him than most so I think you gotta be careful before accusing someone like him of seeking comfort or an easy way out. But I see where you’re coming from I agree with the idea of embracing it but if I were giving him advice I would say don’t succumb to it, take it on!

I figured out why Wim is always saying “BREATHE MOTHERF**KER BREATHE!”
For the second day in a row, I watched this short clip before doing my cold shower. I focused and paid attention and almost IMMEDIATELY the intensity behind the pain subsided. HOWEVER, the shock to my system kept my breathing pattern unmanageable which then kept interfering with my focus. As soon as I started taking those big, deep breaths, the breathing started to get under control and I was then able to focus on the sensations. Incredible what this is doing for my dopamine regulation and sleep pattern even after just one day of cold shower therapy.
Worth noting that a cold shower in the dead of winter, while not as formidable as a cold plunge, is still very effective for those of us who need a reprogrammed brain.

When I watch videos of people with Wim doing ice baths they don't submerge any lower than their necks. In the shower it's easier if you do the same and only shower from the neck down as cold water over the head and face can be a shock and bring on heavier breathing if you're new to this. Shower from the neck down only and you will master cold showers quicker. Guided breathing sessions before hand obviously will be a benefit.

Nice:). I do want to mention. About the anxiety and the breath Wim is teaching. In my opinion when people (like I used to) chronicle hyperventilate without knowing it, this can result in feeling anxious all the time.
Practicing the deep WH breath all the time when dealing with this only could make it worse. Then I would recommend co2 training, like freedivers do. Because ultimately this slows your breathing pace down because the brain is trained to breath less instead of more (co2 tolerance). This helped me dealing with my anxiety (and depression) in the long run. So not breathing more and deep, but breathing less and make it more shallow instead . Much love for all the people dealing with anxiety and depression . Allways pleased to answer your questions about this .
Now I’m about to jump into some ice water! Love it 😊

I suffer immensely with sinusitis but I’ve been finding that if I do it right, I can killit with the cold shower. When I’m dousing my face, I exhale fully and hold, plunging my forehead into the coldest bit. This, I repeated until the cold sensation stops recurring, lossens the muscles that cause upper sinusitis.
Breathing in while withdrawing pulls in little drips of cold water, which moisten the lower chambers but cause the sphincters to contract, opening the passages.
Worked for me at least. Bear in mind, frontal tension headaches will apply tension to the sinuses. Let me know if it helps, we can build up community knowledge
