A great site for vintage Olds information: olds-central.com/
And a great site to purchase vintage Olds... centexbrass.com/
This is a really nice Olds Super from, in all likelihood, 1948. Notice the brass tone ring (I sometimes call it a garland)... During the war effort (WWII) nickel-silver was used primarily for war purposes, leading Olds to use brass for their tone rings for a few years. From the LA factory, this lovely 'Super Olds' was produced. Enjoy! :)
Great horn and great price. Best of luck selling
Thank you. I really like the vintage Olds horns. :)
Hi Jonathan. Tanks for your demonstration of this "super" trumpet. Also your comment about the compression of the valves. I was not aware...
I’ve seen the story in several different places, with the name of the man who made it. I believe he was the plant manager or foreman. it was when Olds had Rafael Mendez agreeing to play one of their Instruments. They had fashioned a new model, the Mendez, for Rafael to try, he had come to meet with a small group and play the trumpet. He played it for some time, then handed the instrument back and said, ‘I’m sorry; this won’t work.’ Amazed and shocked, they took the horn back, looked over every part of it and could think of nothing to do to improve it. Finally, one of the group said something like, ‘Well, his favorite trumpet has leaky valves…’ They then took the valve pistons OUT of his new trumpet,, over-worked so that they were no longer a tight fit like a new horn, and presented the trumpet back to him. Mendez was thrilled. From then on, whenever Mendez needed another trumpet, Olds made sure to over-lap the valves before handing it to Mendez. Fascinating, isn’t it?
Indeed it is really fascinating, because mostly first question you get if you sell a trumpet: compression --》And the price of your vintage horn decreases linear with the remaining compression. Therefore thanks again for yor explanation. Unfortunately I own an Olds Super. But looking forward to your next offers and video.
Greetings Jonathan, always love listening to your trumpet videos!!! Great stuff...that Reeves C2J is a wonderful combination with that Vintage Olds Super. Keep on honkin'!!!
I agree 100%: The Reeves C2J is a fabulous tool. :) Thanks for commenting!
Hi Jonathan,
Thanks for another entertaining and informative video.
I have an Olds Super that I like a lot for its tone and character.
I have 22 trumpets and cornets now. My goal is to restore and clean them, but I am too busy practicing!
Robert! You are horn rich!!! :) Several of mine need a little work, so I’m trying to sell some to get others in peak shape. :) Practice IS the key though; good for you!
Jonathan. Again you have hit it out of the park with this vodeo
Thanks, Chris. This Super is a fine player. :)
Wow😮that c2j sure is creamy!! Great sounds 👍
Isn’t it? I notice sometimes that I need to support and add volume with that piece, but that C2J is a beast; really an incredible price.
Wow, that's a really a nice 🎺trumpet Jon..
I almost wish I had the bandwidth to pick up trumpet, but I got my hands full with sax and flute in my old age.
I do like a decent number of trumpet and trombone players considering I don't play brass. When I was a bit younger, I tried and I actually got about the first octave and a half out of it, but then I didn't stick with it long enough.. Same thing with clarinet, but not as heartbreaking lol I end up playing saxophone; some woodwinds were easier for me to grasp and work, except for the clarinet, oboe, and soprano sax. I ended up playing alto and tenor sax and flute. at one point I was doing so well on flute that I was actually playing alto and bass flutes also in a music college band, but I don't play those anymore, they've been sold off . Hey good luck selling it, that instrument is beautiful .. also I think I might have that same model pair of headphones you were wearing in the video!😂👨🏻
You're too much! :) I have a flute sitting right in the middle of my trumpets, but I rarely play it. I've snuck it into a few videos - but not in a while. I may have to dust it off... :) As always, thank you for commenting. I enjoy your posts!
Wish you luck selling it.
Thanks, Rick. Nice player, but this is a pretty common horn; that’ll be the hardest part of selling a nice Super. :)
It is a Selmer Super?
I am pretty sure it is not. Jonathan will know more.
I have 2 Paris Selmer trumpets and 1 cornet that I like a lot in my search for that bright Bobby Hackett or Billy Butterfield sound.
No, this is an F. E. Olds and Son Super. :)
