In my humble opinion Scofield’s genius is right up there with Bird, Trane, McCoy, Wes, Hendrix, Miles and others who have changed and shaped the music we have been so blessed to listen to.
I agree. He's always been a quick study...and fresh out of Miles' band- this song has a "Silent Way" feel. Sure, he plays great himself, makes the records of others shine when he's a sideman...but it's the scope of his compositions that's staggering and what makes him much more than a great guitar player. You could make an entire Real Book for guitar out of just his tunes.
An artist whose eclectic melodies echo the more graceful heights of our modern age, whilst still linking our individual souls to our deeper feelings. A brilliant and under-appreciated musician!
Listening to the album version of this tune for the first time back in the days was hypnotic. And this impression never left me until today - no matter in what arrangement or with what line up the piece comes to me. Simply subtle! ❤
I freakin love this track....first Album I bought of his...I bought the same guitar Ibanez Artist, a year later played Ronnie Scotts with my band..then saw him play the same club 5 years later..front row..it was a gig I will never forget. He is great composer and the most expressive player I know...may he live for a 1000 years.
First learned of Dennis Chambers in the 90s...saw him w/Mclaughlin. Powerful musician. "Still Warm'' was the first Sco I ever heard. It was on some late night jazz show off a college radio station. Bought it on vinyl first chance I got! Still my top /sco composition, right up there with "Don't Shoot the Messenger".
I was there at the concert and what an afternoon in Copenhagen. I recorded it afterwards from the radio on a really lousy cassettetape, which I still have, heavily worn after 30 years listening and magnetic decay. But this is so much better sounding - so thanks for the edition. The concert just succeeds in every way and is the best I ever heard from Scofield and band. Every single note is important and couldn't have been done differently. They are talkin' !
I love to play along with music I like but when it comes to masters like Scofield I just sit quietly and let him so his thing.I won't even attempt to emulate him or mess up the groove by fumbling trying to keep up. Big respect.
The DX7 was so important. It made us appreciate the sound of a real Fender Rhodes and acoustic piano, and helped birth Acid Jazz and Neo Soul. It certainly made the vintage keyboards market very lucrative.
saw this band live in that same year... half way through the show gary grainger, the bassie, broke a string: he continued with 3 till the end! amazing playing from all
i wish Mr. Scofield could hear the jazz ensemble at Oakland school of the arts play still warm the high school group really pat tribute to Mr. Scofield
My favorite Sco period 1977--87..those early records with Mraz, Swallow and Anthony Jackson are stellar..then comes Still Warm with Darryl Jones as the Darryl I dig (the Stones Darryl got boring but certainly rich), Blue Matter, Loud Jazz and Pick Hits Live....also Electric Outlet as it was the seed of those 4 albums..Gary Grainger and Chambers are to this day one of the best rhythm sections ever ! Great times the 80's were...
@poppinthangs - Hey Poppin, couldnt agree more. The end of this tune on the Still Warm cd is one of my fave outros on any recording. Genius that Sco let Omar Hakim display his unreal drum talent across those chord changes as the volume built to the end. Great memory and I am gonna pull that disc out again - Thanks !
@hoffus Yes the eargasm on the Cd verison starts at 04:57 and continue until 05:47, the arrangements are unreal and can make any person a fan of John and this genre of music. Hoffus I bet you can't guess what I am listening to hehehehe. hope you are too, enjoy your New Year!!!!!
recently i often feel impulses to commit suicide due to depression, but this song reminds me that when i touch parts of my body, like base of neck, in my mouth, its still warm that indicates im still alive though having such impulses. thanks john, what an awesome performance.
Hey lonegroover...I can't express enough on how much I appreciate you uploading Scofield. It's nice to know that there are still people on this planet with good taste. keep it up! Thx, Brother!!!
Not in the same league I think. Although both Holdsworth and Di Meola have their part in guitar greatness as well, I think Scofield's harmonics, laid back soloing with so much feel, his totally depicting the man who can play everything, anywhere, anyplace.... yeah I chose him...!!
1987 Still Warm..killer . the culmination of all his years developing his voice and stints as a sideman. I would argue as ground breaking as Pat Metheny 1980. Jam Bands for me are an outshoot of Sco and Martin, Medski and Woods .
Dennis, the not-so-secret weapon of Sco's fusion years. How can someone play that much and yet still be tasteful? (Just kidding...Dennis knows when to turn it up and when to bring it down). I wish I was a drummer so I could appreciate everything he's doing.
Dennis is fire..his licks are what makes the song flow. ..Omar has a different feel to how he thinks ...the two are so different that is what makes them legends
@hoffus oh one more thing you mention your fave outros on any recording, check out the outro on Peter Gabriel "Sky Blue" live verison with "The Blind Boys of Alabama" I love that tune, that is another priceless outro check it out and let me know what you think about it.
hey lonegroover do you have the studio verison? this verison is good live music is always a treat but I love the drums at the end of the studio verison.
I was so lucky to see this band in concert in Vienna back in 1987.
In my humble opinion Scofield’s genius is right up there with Bird, Trane, McCoy, Wes, Hendrix, Miles and others who have changed and shaped the music we have been so blessed to listen to.

I totally agree
Love this period of John's music
Absolutely...His Grammavision recordings still stand out as his best work.
Scofield Beck Pat Metheny John McLaughlin Pat Martino Larry Carlton are my all time favorite player's.
I wore out the cassette I had of this.
Don Grolnick RIP
One of my fave tunes Sco or anybody for that matter
Dennis is the master of groove... What a vibe
I can't remember how many days in a row I played this album back when it hit the shelves.
Heart warming tones and composition. Adds ideas for peace on this planet, and stop looking for that planet there,
Something unexplainable can happen when musicians get together! 35 years and it remains to to bewitch me!.

Still Warm is one of the best jazz album of all times...
Omar Hakim or Dennis Chambers, same punishment :)

I so agree!! Every track is a winner!!

This don't get old.
Scofield is still just as awe inspiring today as he was back then.
Still moving me intens
Slo Sco and Still Warm. Jolly good show!!!
One of Sco's absolute best compositions. The collective development and individual performances are profound.
I love to play along with music I like but when it comes to masters like Scofield I just sit quietly and let him so his thing.I won't even attempt to emulate him or mess up the groove by fumbling trying to keep up. Big respect.
He sounds like he's playing against the beat! Genius! 4:43 - 5:39
The DX7 was so important. It made us appreciate the sound of a real Fender Rhodes and acoustic piano, and helped birth Acid Jazz and Neo Soul. It certainly made the vintage keyboards market very lucrative.
I heard this 1000 times since i became interested in jazz. Recently got a record player and bought a used vinyl of this off ebay. Im so fucking exited
Thank you for these songs. It's Scofield's best work...
Yes I agree Dan It is Sco finest set....... remember taping it on VHS and playing it over and over.
I agree too. Blue Matter & Still Warm albums. To die for lol.
and Loud Jazz.
Just...so...good!
very high level--his compositions will stand the test of time imho!!!

John is infamous for not giving a shit. Who would blame him, I wouldn't if I could play like him.
Delores Thompson- Is there a video for us to check out?
flat out sick as a drummer .. it would be awesome to play with a man and a band like this...
So wonderful brings tears for me 😢😂😊
With John, he shows how less notes can shape a bigger sound.
fewer notes
@@joseluismartingil1096 lesser and fewer notes

it just doesn't really get better than this, does it? thx for uploading. made my day!

this feels much more textured in the comping than on the record around the 4-5 minute mark...great support for the smoking man
Спасибо John за Вашу музыку и творчество !
Это мои любимые композиции !
Браво !!!
recently i often feel impulses to commit suicide due to depression, but this song reminds me that when i touch parts of my body, like base of neck, in my mouth, its still warm that indicates im still alive though having such impulses. thanks john, what an awesome performance.
I hope you're doing okay
Take care brother… music is special and contains what we need for this world to continue and move forward.. hope you’re well and happy now…
Hey lonegroover...I can't express enough on how much I appreciate you uploading Scofield. It's nice to know that there are still people on this planet with good taste. keep it up! Thx, Brother!!!
@adburger
you know it, man. it's still in the rotation. electric outlet to pick hits live is an extraordinary suite of albums.....
The band members are all great musicians as well!!!
One of my favorite videos on RUclips. I absolutely love this performance!
Rarely sublime moment. Time machine please!
thank you lonegroover for posting, loving it
@adburger I hear you. I was there too. Pure magic!
Dennis was born on fire, man! :)
awesome
John is up there with Allan Holdsworth and Al Di Meloa, imaginative and original, and takes my mind on a eclectic journey every time I hear him.
Humane Pain compositional wise is better than those two.
Not in the same league I think. Although both Holdsworth and Di Meola have their part in guitar greatness as well, I think Scofield's harmonics, laid back soloing with so much feel, his totally depicting the man who can play everything, anywhere, anyplace.... yeah I chose him...!!
Besides Hendrix, he's the best in my book!
I wouldn't put him in the same league as Holdsworth. But John is special.
@@Uptown59 Scofield is the best in my book. Such a versatile player. Holdsworth wasn't really versatile but was better technically!
1987 Still Warm..killer . the culmination of all his years developing his voice and stints as a sideman. I would argue as ground breaking as Pat Metheny 1980. Jam Bands for me are an outshoot of Sco and Martin, Medski and Woods .
Thanks for the reload! Love all three vids...
I Love.......................
Grandissimo........
Us ; here on earth ; that band ; on a higher plane of existence. Nearly thirty years ago too .
grandissame !😮
Thank You !!
A true Master!!!

Right. Dennis is more than awesome. What a team here. Weapons of mass destruction.
Dennis is fire..his licks are what makes the song flow. ..Omar has a different feel to how he thinks ...the two are so different that is what makes them legends
uahhhhhhhhhhh
Unlike most guitarists Sco plays behind the beat which adds anticipation to each note. A unique talent..
Most straight ahead jazz musicians, including guitarists, play behind the beat when soloing.
@@jonathantegnell9935 Miles wasn't a great fan of it though!
@@Happy-Me. I was just responding to the poster above saying it was a "unique" talent, when it's not in the slightest unique.
Would like to see this one but with Hakim behind the kit. Guess there aren't any live recordings with him.
Same for me. But Dennis... That's ok Haha
Yamaha and Roland Jazz Chorus 120
pretty incredible to say the least!
would like to see him with omar behind the kit
Stingray with chorus is so 80s
@hoffus oh one more thing you mention your fave outros on any recording, check out the outro on Peter Gabriel "Sky Blue" live verison with "The Blind Boys of Alabama" I love that tune, that is another priceless outro check it out and let me know what you think about it.
Chambers..My goodness...
Gary Grainger; Jheri curl in full effect. Drip drip...
SoCal music in a rainy European city - hope the audience dug it
My favourite Sco era...apart from when he toured with metheny!!!
Capo !!
hey lonegroover do you have the studio verison? this verison is good live music is always a treat but I love the drums at the end of the studio verison.
5:41 "I'm happy to be the greatest!"
Wait a minute - does Darryl Jones play a modified Music Man Stingray with a single coil neck pickup??
I have this concert on VHS, awesome, do you know if it is available on DVD?
back in the days where music meant something
Dennis Chambers ladies and gentlemen...
Ahh, that's Dennis Chambers on drums!
who is playing along with Scofield?
From 3:58 to 6:08 Genius phrasing
4:05 - 4:32
4:34
what amp is he using?
@greekwy not for soloing though...wish he had a real rhodes for that
Rogers
@juanbarros88 or go buy it. Musicians gotta eat. Especially jazz musos...
normally a boogie mark 4
Quality 04:03 - 05:40
John scofield is the best guitarist ever hands down, only ones who come close are mark Whitfield, Wes Montgomery, and joe pass
Agree, but I would add Grant Green to your list.
dennis is the truth....know that......watch thoans pridgen....he proves that.......
Lol when Johnny’s go it’s a third gear
at 09:07 drummer knows their music is a bit boring and feels tough bc of the audience
Boring? The fuck do you listen to
