I lived in Darmstadt in the early 60's and have been back many times over the years with my German wife.. I have walked these streets many times and seen how they have changed. 60 years ago, most of these street were open to car traffic. The whole downtown has become a pedestrian zone, although there is a huge underground parking garage under the Luisen Center , which is accessed from underground tunnels from the outskirts of the downtown area.

If you would use Google, you could see, that Darmstadt is one of the safest cities in Germany. Very low criminal rate.
