In 1998 I was told I would never be able to have children. My world shattered. While I was mourning the loss of what I felt like was the future I wanted, I heard this song and it became the soundtrack of every single night for many many months as I came to grip with not being able to have a child. The words... I'm leaving shallow water, all my dreams of you, I can't go on, I want to run away. Those words oi. There was really something wrong with my soul. After so many years I've forgotten about this song until yesterday, 24 years later and I started to sob. Only this time I was holding my 7 year old daughter as I squeezed her tight and danced with her in the lounge. Sometimes you feel you want to give up. You feel you have no goal. You feel you want to give up on your goals. Just try one more time. Just one more time. Thank you for this powerful song.
I'm so glad that your story eventually had a happy ending, I also lost 2 through miscarriages but am beyond blessed with my daughter turning 18 in 2 weeks... You also just can't help wonder who they would be today if they survived... Blessed none the less!
My heart aches when I hear this song. It swirls with nostalgia and a time when being a young adult meant a life of living in the moment and facing a blank slate of possibilities.
Was a young man at Hatfield when I discovered this band in Morgan's. Went to their concert in VTH arena and saw them at Oppikopi. What pleasure to stumble across this in the Caribbean...
Madness, absolute madness... the energy, passion, harmony and emotion shown between you all in this rendition deserves all the plaudits, for this - we salute you !
I'm having a lekker cry here in Holland. This song basically sucked me back into a whole giant nostaglia puddle. Just amazing to see all of you. Sending love uit de laag landen.
This is just amazing. Grab a beer. Have a listen. Look for the faces. We were so, so young when this came out. Hopeful, wishful. Man, this took me back. 25 years later and it still rings out as an anthen for those of us who became adults in-between now and then. Ciao Ard and team, what a gift.
Fcuk me, this brings tears to my eyes. Saw these artists, in their bands, decades ago. Then, I follow the sailing. This pops up. I'm fighting to hold back the tears, because it's close to my heart. It's deep, few will understand. If any, because I cannot. Greetings from Primrose, Johannesburg 🇿🇦
Stoked guys. That track was an anthem for us growing up in the mid/late 90's . Hours of fun on our guitars around bonfires trying to redo J.J. tunes... we tried our best to sound like Ard. 😀 What incredible VOX's!! Thanks for the effort and for sharing 👌 great production.
We came upon this song via The Waterboys. The story as follows ... Mike Scott - himself - replied to a tweet by Arno Carstens - the main support act in this weekend's SA Waterboys concerts - that we've been avidly anticipating since 2020. Clicking on Arno's page, we came upon this link ... and here we are ... in awe of this masterpiece ... that has induced an Ard / Just Jinjer phase. Thank you Spotify. So, on the eve of the most keenly anticipated concert of our lives, we are, quite unexpectedly, rocking to Just Jinjer. And so happy for it. There are so many masterpieces penned by Ard and co. Beautiful music. Thank you, guys.
Got chills . The years went by so fast . Could feel the energy of great musicians creating magic. Congrats Ard and also Ross on his solo career. How things change is awesome 👌
Wow... all the memories came flooding back* Just Jinger songs feature strongly on my highschool playlist! First friend holiday away, first kiss.... so... many....memories!
Ard, I remember the first time I heard Shallow Waters, at a small gig at Hard Rock Cafe where Fools Garden were signing Lemon Tree a hit at the time. Leon Reutenbach was supporting and someone asked if you could get up and sing a song. It's stayed with me all these years, as a huge fan of yours and help awaken the SA fan in me for bands like Just Jinger, Springbok Nude Girls, Watershed, Prime Circle Parlotones and so on through the naughties and beyond. Living in England these days one of the things I miss the most is being able to see you, Arno, Ross and bands like Watershed and the Tones live. Keep making great music, it warms my soul.
The meaning of this song has changed for me over the years and this rendition has been bittersweet... I just lost my mom amd am embarking on a new journey that doesn't include her. I truly am leaving shallow waters to a big scary unknown and it is this beautiful rendition of a song that's been a big part of the soundtrack to my life, that will be sitting in my soul as a constant reminder that life goes on and it can be beautiful again.
Had to watch it a few more times and the tears are just rolling now! So much emotion and such a once in a lifetime opportunity to see so many of SA Rock legends gathered together. Love it
Man...this song...The only way I can explain what it means to me is to take you back to a cold night in late July 1998.. I left matric in 1996 and by 1998 was so terribly lost as to what to do with my life, I went through my first real heartbreak in late 1997 and just couldn`t find a way through it all...I decided to join my best friend from school on the usual 1990`s 2 year trip to the UK on a working visa... The night I got into my dad`s car to head to Jhb International to get my flight I was absolutely kakking myself, wondering if it was the right thing to do, wondering what I was heading towards with no real plan in mind or laid out for me to follow...as we turned onto the highway my dad could see how nervous I was and put on the radio...this track then began and every word hit me like a warm,, all enveloping cloud...complete calm came over me...I then completely knew that everything was going to be just fine.. I ended up having the best 2 years of my life living in and working in Manchester and met people that i`m still great friends with... Thank you so much for writing this incredible track, it still makes me smile so hard whenever I hear it!
This South Africa. We all get together and make things better and have each other's back. From the SA rugby team to Dricuss to our musicians we always find a way to work together to make our country and our people better and stronger 💪
I can so clearly remember Just Jinger playing at Morgan’s Cat and Chillers in Randburg when I was in my early 20’s. Shallow Waters was one of my most favor tracks. This new version is just spectacular 🙌 and I love the collaboration with those famous artists from that time that catapulted the SA music scene. This rendition gives me absolut goosebumps as I have so many fond memories from that time and when I used to blast that CD in my car. I even gave Ard a lift once from the Waterfront 😄 and I was fan girling so much I could barely concentrate on driving 😂 Absolutely loved Just Jinger and I still have my signed copy of their CD that features Shallow Waters ❤
Ahhh man...The memories...reminds me of the "Levi's Sunset Ribbon Red HIV / AIDs Music Video" which was also a cracking collaboration of SAs finest. Henry Ate was another from this era...Royal show grounds PMB
Wow wow wow ! What an incredible collaboration …so proud to be South African …you are all so talented and Ard is a legend …just love your work thank you for this and for all of you for sharing your talent and passion …❤️

What an awesome tune! 1st watched Ard sing this at a small venue in PE circa 98/99, must have been stood 2 to 3 mtrs from the band. So powerful! Sitting here in Finland playing this version on repeat, tears streaming down my face. #homesick
