  • Another massive data breach has struck, this time putting thousands of BMW customers at risk. In what is being called one of the largest leaks involving an automotive brand, personal information on over 14,000 Hong Kong BMW owners has been improperly accessed and now circulating online.
On July 18th, BMW Concessionaires in Hong Kong reported to the city's privacy commissioner that sensitive personal information of around 14,000 customers had been improperly accessed and exposed.
The compromised data included names, mobile phone numbers, and SMS opt-out preferences. The data was being managed by a third party contractor called Sanuker that notified both law enforcement and the privacy watchdog after discovering the breach.
While BMW and Sanuker are cooperating with the ongoing investigation, many customers and privacy advocates have raised complaints about the handling of this serious incident. BMW only posted a brief notice to their website and did not directly contact the thousands of individuals whose privacy was put at risk.
