I'm in the process of putting together some of those shelves in the garage. I've done one wall already, now I'm doing the other wall. I tweaked one of them to have a really tall bottom shelf by removing a shelf, so I could put the clothes dryer in but still have shelves above it. Then the shelf I removed from that one got given to one of the other units to make it a five shelf instead of four. I turned one shelf into a grow shelf by hanging shop lights from the bottom of one shelf. I don't really want to have a massive grow space indoors, but having one shelf has been amazing this year for starting seeds and taking cuttings. I also have a lot of S hooks that I hook through the holes on the sides and use the hooks to dry herbs, garlic, bags of harvested seed heads etc. Super handy. Can never have enough hooks. I have one large shelf unit in the shed and the goal is to expand to the other walls to completely free up the floor space. It's going to be great. I also have two $20 lightweight shelf units sitting in front of the shed roller door, which I don't use currently, so I figured I could use it for lightweight storage, and if I need to move them down the track, I can. They're narrower and shorter than the big units, but it's tidied up all the pots, punnets, trays and what have you. I totally relate to your joy at putting them up and getting everything on the shelves, it is SO satisfying. I can't wait for all of mine to be done. It's amazing how much storage space you get when you go vertical. When I put my shelves up in the garage I discovered that I could actually fit two storage tubs between the top shelf and the ceiling (where I had assumed only one), and I could also fit tubs under the roller door track without interfering with the mechanism (where I had assumed none would fit) - this gave me a whopping 12 extra storage tubs of space. I was absolutely giddy 😂
Just a suggestion to keep the IKEA drawers in your office, where they'll be dry. The wood isn't protected and, although they're great, the wood is thin (I have a couple of sets) and they just won't last in a shed. Get some rectangular plastic containers with lids (I use 2l ice-cream tubs or similar) and keep your seeds in those - suits small and large packets. I keep mine in the fridge - I'm spilling over from 8 into 3 smaller take-away containers, but they'll all get sorted through this year. I'm sure the family would like some of the space on the bottom shelf back. However, I'm not keen on keeping them in an unheated building (garage, potting shed or garden room) due to the small, but real, possibility that something will get into them. It's also better to keep seeds at a relatively steady, cool temperature - sheds can get really hot too. I keep all my seeds in alphabetical order, except for some types, like Nasturtiums, that get a takeaway container all to themselves. It's the simplest and it works. I keep an Excel spreadsheet and can see what's getting old and what I need to order. Now if I can only figure out how to print that out .... I have a relatively new potting shed (mainly just a shed with large windows - will be doing potting elsewhere - the excitement is real. 😀
Getting excited about a kettle is a milestone on you improving your plot for working longer. Think cuppa soups, instant porridge or chocolate pud in a mug … you can make a meal, not just a cuppa. But that fresh cuppa is so refreshing. And no scrimping on size of your drink.
I spent time this weekend cleaning all my seed starting pots and setting up my seed starting area in the basement, tossing out some things that were no good anymore. Very satisfying indeed!
I love your excitement JB, so infectious. I want to tidy our shed now. I love a storage box and our local Homebase is closing down so i keep sneaking in there to buy boxes heehee. My hubby complains our current shed is too full of my gardening bits ag up the place. He did watch your shed build video and is, I think, secretly quite impressed with it. He watched your last one over my shoulder and said "Thats roomy". 2025 could be the year of the shed 🎉😊
It’s the simple things that make us smile the most. You with ya Kettle & new shelving made me smile 😊 infectious. Thanks for sharing JB. Happy new year to you & Jess
Hi jb love the videos when you go home take your gas bottle out of your stove wrap it up in something old rags to keep it warm as butane doesn't operate very cold when it is cold happy New year
Hey JB, if you put those shelves against the opposite wall, you will be able to store taller items on the top shelf. Just a thought. Happy New Year. Haydn
Do you have a hand plane? You could thin and cut out (where necessary "barge boards" ) so the water will ramp away. Plane to just thinner than wall boards, if you have a power sander that could work too. Have a great new years and hopefully a better growing year. Mike
I've got a similar shelving unit to those, not a problem at all if you don't move them, very sturdy with weight on them. But the only drawback are the shelves, if they are like mine, they are MDF. Mine have gone mouldy and are becoming soft after 18 months or so, they will have to be replaced soon with something longer lasting.
I covered my mdf shelves with self-adhesive vinyl to reduce the moisture affecting them. It's only been a month or so since I did it, but so far so good! Plus, now they look so pretty 😆
@@JBNat my shelves are in a brick outbuilding, with toolboxes and general "shed stuff" on them. Perhaps sealing them with a varnish or oil might be an option?

Nice tidy start to the new year 🧑🌾 I took my Christmas 🎄🧑🎄 decorations down today 🙄 my dining room looks really bare 😮 I need a new shed - the door has blown completely off 🥴
I have similar shelves for my germination station. I can’t get mine apart without a good whack of a mallet, and I’ve bashed things under them a few times. I agree, very fiddly to put together. Mine were black framed which seemed to make it worse, as you couldn’t really see the holes to line up the bits. Looks great now it’s done. So neat. A huge upgrade over the Wilko shelves and so much more space on each shelf. Great addition. So satisfying to see the space becoming organised. Taller tools is as much of a tongue twister as me trying to say damson gin jam the other day 😩😄 I laughed out loud at you feeling you needed to use scrap wood and add a make do and mend element to those pieces of wood at the base…. Then the shed pushing back and letting you know that wouldn’t work and only new wood would do 🤭 Happy New Year to you and Jess. Exciting to have a honeymoon to look forward to. 🎉
I have similar shelves in my garage. The wooden shelves have developed the most horrendous mould. Less than a year old and I need to replace the shelves - the structure is solid. Was thinking I should have treated them in some way?
@@Berni2468 someone else has said the exact same thing! I think it's just the nature of the cheap materials. Could replace them with some higher quality ply board.
@@JBNat definitely cheap board. Not sure how they could be treated. Was thinking if I had shrink wrapped them they would have lasted longer. Hope that hasn’t worried you - just something to keep an eye on.
Looking good JB. Can I ask your opinion on quad grows and chilli grows? Which would you advise using for growing tomatoes? Happy New Growing Year to you 🎉
Ahh perfect yes I was going to link this one ruclips.net/video/u0omQ1zS930/видео.html but it sounds like you already found it. I think the chilli grow would be too small for a tomato, but I've grown plenty of toms in the quadgrows over the years and they do very well :)
@@DavidGibb-vo3df oh no that's a shame, it had really decent reviews on the website, people's only complaint was what I mentioned about the possibility of them popping out
