    • @thepotterycorner
      @thepotterycorner  3 года назад +2

      Hello and thanks for watching and commenting. I use white sand (very fine silica sand) on the kiln shelf which act like tiny ball bearings to stop large flat pieces cracking. Have a look at my kiln opening videos and you'll see how I use it. Hope that helps 🙏

    I would like to know if you could suggest a way to fire many small tile 3 inches square in such a way that it prevents warping

    • @thepotterycorner
      @thepotterycorner  Год назад

      Hi Linnea and thanks for watching. The most important thing is to make sure the tiles are dried flat - with weights to keep them flat whilst drying. Small tiles would be best bisque fired on their edge. Try not to curl the slab during construction as clay has a memory and will recurs in the firing. Hope that helps 😊

    Hi i am new to your channel and truely enjoying your content. I want to ask you, can a person make the cones like this too? That would really help. Thank you very much. Great videos. Sorry I am talking about the kiln props, the round kiln stands that your kiln stand stands on!

    • @thepotterycorner
      @thepotterycorner  11 месяцев назад

      Hi and thanks for watching. The kiln props which support the kiln shelves are made of the same materials as the shelf and are very strong. I'm not sure homemade ones from clay would be man enough to hold the shelf and the work put on it. I do use small cookies placed on the kiln props if I need just a bit of extra height which works fine. Hope that helps 😊

    • @thepotterycorner
      @thepotterycorner  3 года назад

      Hi Kelly. The fabric (linen tea towel) is to stop the slab sticking to the table (so you roll the slab on the tea towel). I wash them in the washing machine after each use to keep them clean from clay dust. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching. 😄

    How do you keep them from worping when they're drying?

    • @thepotterycorner
      @thepotterycorner  3 года назад +4

      Hi Colleen - thanks for the question. When I have cut out the cookies, I place between two wooden boards and put a couple of pots of glaze on the top to weight the board down. Leave to dry for a day or so before removing top board and let them dry naturally. Hope that helps. Cheers

  • @celiagreenaway725

    Do they need to be made from a higher firing clay than you’ll be using for your work? If you only bisque fire don’t they then shrink further when fired to a higher temperature? In 10:years I’ve never had any glaze run on to a kiln shelf, so the issue isn’t familiar to me but as I’m planning to to try some glaze additions (Cone 8 ish), am thinking they might be a good precaution.

    • @thepotterycorner
      @thepotterycorner  Год назад

      Hi Denise-cif you mean the mug on the left hand side on the shelf then the combo is Amaco Snow, Seaweed and Cobalt. If you watch the kiln opening videos there are many Amaco glaze combinations to choose from. So many glazes! Thanks for watching and hope that helps 😊

    • @thepotterycorner
      @thepotterycorner  2 месяца назад +1

      Hiya and thanks for watching. you could use kiln wash on the cookies but it's not really needed. I tend to use cookies smaller than the circumference of the pot so that if any glaze drips down it doesn't stick the cookie to the piece. Hope that helps.

    Do you put grog in your clay ? Kiln wash ?

    • @thepotterycorner
      @thepotterycorner  Год назад

      Hi Tracy and thanks for watching. I don't use kiln wash as I find it flakes over time and can then fly around inside the kiln and attach itself to my work. You can certainly put grog in the clay or used a grogged clay. I just use offcuts as I'm working to make a few new ones. Hope that helps 😊

    • @thepotterycorner
      @thepotterycorner  3 года назад +3

      Hello Mary. I don't use kiln wash. I find it flakes and causes dust in the kiln which can adhere to the glaze. I avoid glaze getting on the kiln shelf by using a cookie if I think the glaze is going to run. Hope that helps and thanks for watching

      Hi Helen - no - I don't use kiln wash. I Don't like it rubbing or chipping off and the floating around the kiln. I make sure the cookie is slightly smaller than the circumference of the piece and if I think it's going to run then I stack a larger cookie underneath that. Hope that helps 🙏
