Thank you so much for these ideas. As an art teacher, it's sometimes tricky to know for sure how many coats of glaze are on the pieces, and if the bottoms are cleaned properly. These tips are all really helpful!
I just got my mini kiln and a small electric wheel. But when it got here it looks too small to make what I want, your kiln looks exactly what I have in mind. What kind and size is yours. I'm so excited, in college my pottery class was my favorite. Now I have nothing but time on my hands and am looking forward to my relaxation through creativity.
Hi Karren I have the Skutt KM-818-3 I think this post will help. Here is the link for you ttps://potterycrafters.com/buying-a-pottery-kiln/ It's the fourth kiln out of 6 popular home kilns. I really love it and is pretty energy effect. 😊
Thanks for all your informative videos, I've learned so much. This one will definitely be used as I just had a very nice pot stick to a shelf and now both are damaged
Good Morning, your videos are the very best for me. You explain so clearly and slowly that I can usually follow them well, even though my English is not very good. I have to teach myself everything - you are a great help to me! Thank you and greetings from the Niederrhein from Germany! ❤️🙋♀️
A question about cookies. The person who owns the kiln I use will only fire to 05. I watched your video on making cookies and you said to fire to 10. So if I were to fire my cookies to 05 because that is only how high she will allow will the 05 cookies still protect?
Hi Don. Great question. I think I did not explain it right. You don't fire the cookies to cone 10 (unless you fire your pottery to cone 10) You will want to use cone 10 clay because it is a stronger clay body and lasts longer. I suggest cone 10 with grog because of it's strength and lower shrinkage rate.
Just came across your videos while researching the right wheel and kiln to be my first.Quick question on running glazes. Why does that happen and how can you prevent that in the first place. Still plan on protecting the kiln with all your suggestions, but would like to avoid running glazes too! Thanks so much for very informative videos!
Hi Lori. Very Cool. There are glazes that run and glazes that are stable. I like runny glazes for the effect. Here is a video that may help. ruclips.net/video/2OOWC_rgJNo/видео.html I also have over 100 videos for beginner potters to choose from. Here is the link for you. www.youtube.com/@PotteryCrafters/videos
Once again, thanks Marie for a great video and your website. I am so happy you introduced me to kiln cookies as I made them per your other video and swear by them. It's also a great way to use up clay I'm not happy with but can't stand the thought of throwing it out - they got made into kiln cookies :-) I used cone 10 clay to use with my cone 6 glaze firings which I think might make them last longer, too.
Hi thanks for another great video. I use a rub brick to clean off the kiln wash from my shelf when needed. You can get them in the brick laying are of your local home improvement store. Have you heard about kiln paper? I see it used in microwave kilns and for glass fusing ? Also love your hair down.
Thanks, Allen 😊 Great tip to use rub brick! Thanks, I'll check it out. Yes, I have kiln paper in this post potterycrafters.com/how-to-protect-your-kiln-shelf-from-melting-glaze/ you're right it is used more for glass fusing.
Hi Michele, yes I do have a video on it. It's not completely melted on the cookie. The one that was I removed the same way. Here is the link if you want to check it out. ruclips.net/video/Jh8vQsfiRqE/видео.html 😊
I have 2 little divots in my kiln shelf that had kiln wash on it, from glaze melts. What do you recommend for filling these little holes? I didn't find much help in Google. TIA
Hi Diane. I would recommend filling them in with kiln wash. I had a few holes from glaze drips and the tech at Skutt told me to dab some kiln wash in the holes and then smooth them out with my finger so I don't get uneven bumps. Let dry and apply kiln wash to the whole shelf. 👍
Have you ever heard of making kiln cookies with a higher temp clay (like cone 10 clay) to use when firing cone 6 pottery at cone 6 temp in the kiln so there's no chance of the cookie melting if the kiln temp goes over cone 6?
Yes. That is a great question! I always make my cookies with cone 10 clay and grog so they don't warp and last longer. If you haven't seen it here is a video on making them. 😊 ruclips.net/video/FNzQiAsUQsc/видео.htmlsi=P7th3i8XF7xmWyiE
Oh super! Thank you. This is the first time I've seen any info on it. I'm the owner of a brand new L&L and haven't even done the first test firing yet so I don't know when I'll get around to making cone 10 cookies,.... but if someone wanted to make and sell those I'd think they'd be a successful endeavor!
Yes. I don't like using kiln wash so cookies come in handy. That's great! congratulates on your new kiln. If you haven't seen this video I think it will help. ruclips.net/video/jtdtBExNpqY/видео.htmlsi=xHtZlqbpFNVQTM2D Happy glazing 💖
This is a really helpful video, as always. Thank you again! When you use cookies, do you still apply kiln wash to your shelves, just in case? Or are the cookies enough? I'm hoping to use the kiln-washed cookie method when I fire up my kiln!
Glad to hear it 😀 No I don't because I don't like the maintenance that goes with it. I used my friend's shelf with the old kiln wash on it for the video. My shelves still look pretty good. someone had suggested I put kiln wash on my cookies. I think it's a great idea but I still haven't done it. 😊
Thank you for another informative video. I have a full kiln shelf same as yours but it has a small hairline crack on the top about 2 inches long. The crack has not deepened to the bottom of the shelf. It has survived a low fire test run and has only been used once. Is it safe to keep using it?
Very good question Brittany. If it has only been used once I would try taking it back if you could. It is not recommended to use because of the pressure of the high temperatures it takes on each fire the spot may weaken and collapse. I hope this helps 😊
Hello Sylvie. I love using the cookies because I don't have to mess with the kiln wash maintenance and I can flip the shelves over to help keep them from warping. If you haven't seen it yet here is the link to my making cookies video. ruclips.net/video/FNzQiAsUQsc/видео.html 🍪 😍
Hi Marie! Thank you for another informative video! I recently fired a speckled clay body, which ended up leaving fine black specks on my shelves after a single cone 6 firing. The specks are flat so I couldn’t scrape them off, so I had to add two new layers of kiln wash to cover them. Have you experienced this or heard of it happening? I was worried that the specks might transfer to my white clay bodies, thus more kiln wash (I foresee some shelf scraping in my future :).
I have a Skutt 818 with 3-inch brick. I love it. Here are the links for some more information on kilns that may help you decide. potterycrafters.com/buying-a-pottery-kiln/ and potterycrafters.com/choosing-an-electric-kiln-a-step-by-step-buyers-guide/ 😊
Glad to help. It helps to have 3-inch bricks for more insulation and I found with smaller kilns you don't need to make a lot of pottery before you can fire up your kiln. Plus the room heats up less and it's easier on your power bill. 😊
Oh, and I love your videos and glad I found you.
Thank you so much Don. Glad to help you on your pottery crafting journey.
Thanks, Marie, for yet another clear, thorough "how-to" video! So grateful for your videos & website!

Hi Christine. You are welcome! That is great!!! So happy for you. Did you see the kiln questions video?
@@PotteryCrafters just going to watch that now. Slowly working my way through all your vids!

I think I now use all the methods except stilts all at the same time lol
You're welcome Kat 😍
You're so cute 😀 I only use stilts when I glaze the whole piece.
I’d love to see how you remove the cookies to a piece that is completely melted to the pot. I think you have a video on it but not sure.
