Thanks again to Adam, without his kind help this video would not have been possible. The filming of this maiden flight was far from ideal (new 2nd cameraman, muddy field, high contrast lighting etc.) but was the last chance to film it before the 2nd UK Lockdown started so was 'hobson's choice'.
A maiden flight ideally needs to be in ideal conditions. But occasionally you have to play the cards you are dealt and still get it done! :D

Many thanks! It was a last attempt and if that throw hadn't worked and it had crashed into the field and broke something then it would have all been for nothing! :D

considering the "presure" you were under to get this maiden flight of the AR Wing Pro on video , I must say "well done " ....and it shows how much confidence you have in your flight controller and the model . For a first flight... it looks very promising. That's two out of three reviews going well.....waiting to see our home town reviewer... Andrew Newton .....thanks heavens we are a patient lot. When INAV is setup following the steps that I recently covered in the Lockdown Build and the INAV for Beginners series it always works for me. So far... ;)

Very convincing and stable flight! Off course it's in the hands of a good pilot, but I would be nervous and shaky, if I had to launch a plane right next to a regular mud pond, like this. Good job!

Hi what is the center position of the elevon against for example the edge of the winglet for a straight flight not too much nose down or up during first launch.Thank you very much.
I now have one on order, I will fit a ZOHD Kopilot to mine but have a choice of cameras, probably a immersionrc tramp to get the pics. One thing though, I don’t have any muddy fields to fly from! Only with grass on them, will I be ok?

How did you fix the nose down issue when in GPS loiter mode? Just built an AR Wing Pro and have the same issue with loosing altitude in loiter mode. Do you have a iNav diff that you can post?

I’ve been flying FPV since ‘07 and I think this DJI system on fixed wing is what’s been missing from the experience for me. I see some purchases in my future.
It is epic. No other work for it. That desire to have a birds eye view and soar and swoop is what it feels like in HD. Stay tuned - Shark Byte videos coming soon too..

Hi! How are you balancing this Wing? Even using a 4S 3300mah Lipo it still needs around 139grams of weight. What are you guys using for weights? What am I doing wrong?
It is designed for a heavy battery and/or Gopro. See my other videos on it. You will need about 460g of weight up front in total.. best of luck

@Painless360 how did you manage to balance the wing without any extra GoPro sitting on the nose side? Mine with the 4s2p Li-ion pack needed extra 130g on the nose! What's your trick?
No trick. I also needed some weight in the nose. See the setup video.. Best of luck

Agreed! Begged can't be choosers and it looks like the corn had only being harvested in the past few days so the fields were just dep mud.. Worth it for the flying though! :) .

Hi! I was having too much waggle on a windy day, is this expected? I was hoping for a more locked in experience and any tips on this? Any tips on throws, i had a feeling that my throws were too much and this might be adding to the behaviour.
Using a flight controller?
@@Painless360 : yes, i do have a vector on it but haven't tuned it or anything. I was flying mostly in the manual mode..
As the wings are huge sails then there will be an effect from the wind. Turning on the flight controller (that has been tuned well) can remove these un-commanded movements and help a lot in windy conditions...
@@Painless360: Yes, I will get the horizontal leveling working for this. I was also thinking if my throws were too high and also my flying style needs to change for fpv wings from quads. Line of sight I'm generally taking larger turns but on fpv I'm thinking I'm flying a bit more aggressively. Thank you for your help and reply.

Great flying, nevermind the quarantine, hopefully this is the last one before a good vaccine. I think it's time for another Opentx, Inav, Build series masterclasses. As to the wing itself, first flight is very promising. Roomy, stable, fast and efficient. What more can one ask out of a molded EPP model?

Drier landing conditions and more time to come back if there was an issue. After this flight I was sure that the FC worked, the GPS worked and the FPV system was going to work fine as well. The FC level needs about 4-5 degree up angle for this model, that'll help with the GPS modes. Second time out would be a full power throttle test, acrobatics and a RTH test too.. See my INAV for beginners series where I cover all of this in detail..

Good flight and a great looking plane, I've been waiting for this video. I'm putting the AR Wing Pro on my list. Just curious, going on what you said about the Lock down phase 2, will you not be able to go outside alone in an open field and fly your planes like in this video?
At the moment I'm respecting the letter and spirit of lockdown. If things improve then possibly. All of the flying I had planned has been postponed to December ;(

Lots more flying needed before I'd even consider changing anything. One flight is not enough....
@@Painless360 Totally understand! I meant to ask hypothetically. I have not flown a wing only conventional plane. Thanks again and I hope the situation remedies soon to allow for resumed flights! Perhaps one could use the wing as a "Air sampling system" with Petri dish on the DJI mount to see if any airborne insidious RNA type are lofted about......... I bet you could insert a huge array of cotton swabs as a vortex generator of sorts and sample with extreme efficiency and to be sure safety maintaining distance from any possible source. In fact, this may be the best way to ensure a efficient and broad method of data and metric gathering to circumnavigate and sample air from around the island..........sorry, I digress........ How much does this whole setup cost? I make like just over $10 an hour, doing hard on the bones work, I hurt now, better get on gabapentin or something, gotta lol I want one with the eye gear, looks like the B-2, I was looking at that fast goblin one too, think I want more of a wing glider so I can go stable and slow when needed
Depends on if you need the radio, battery, charger and other pieces too. Hundreds of dollars if you have nothing already..
Would this be good for slower exploratory type FPV? Can it be flown slower, like at around 20 mph?

What are your after thoughts on your AR Wing Pro maiden flight? Would you add vortex generators to any of your AR Wing?
No need, very wide speed envelope and very efficient..
Any chance on having a build video? I'm specifically interested in this because of the DJI.

@@Painless360 will check the vid ref’d above... Which board did you use? DJI says “The DJI FPV Air Unit is only compatible with flight controllers that support Betaflight.” I ordered an F765 for my AR Wing Pro, then read this about the Air Unit. Does that knock out all OSD info from the goggles unless using a Betaflight supported FC?
I can easily return and exchange the F765... Just trying to understand what FC was intended to be used with a Wing that was “designed” with DJI gear in mind?

Yep. I've normalised the audio on the video so those quieter sections can sound louder than they are in real life.. I hope that makes sense..

Nice launch, did you set your idle throttle to 2000
Launch idle is usually around 1300 but I do use a higher setting on the tricky planes. See my Autolaunch video.. Happy flying
Thanks for reply i already did a couple of autolaunch but never try with idle throttle at 2000 my concern is that the fc controller will not detect the autolaunch at such a high value
From all the testing over the past few years here - The detection has nothing to do with the idle throttle setting.. Happy flying!

They are a technically excellent but are limited thanks to DJIs insistence of trying to lock you into their technology and ecosystem..

FC pitch angle wrong. See my INAV for beginners 2020 series for more detail..
@@Painless360 My understanding from Github fixed wing guide on nav modes is that loiter (NavPosHold) does not maintain altitude, the pilot has to use pitch control. See Github desc. But you can combine NavPosHold and Althold to loiter at a fixed altitude. This is the mode configuration used by iNav fixedwing group model.
I had similar problems with iNav on a S800 wing. Besides adjusting with flight controller pitch angle as Painless360 mentions, what really sorted out this issue was to activate "TURN ASSIST" along each and every navigation mode (Loiter, RTH, Waypoint). One activating Turn Assist must also change "fw_turn_assist_pitch_gain = 0.4" (from the default value of "1", to prevent too nose up attitude during turns). Just like a human pilot applying "bank and yank", iNav applies up elevator along with the aileron command, during the turn, not after the PIFF algorithm detects the high loss... It just works. inav has no sonice model pro perset, only a sonic model 600m
The settings for any of the 900mm+ wings will work fine. I just used the same settings and process as I use in the INAV for Beginners 2020 series. An autotune and autotrim will get the model flying great for how you have it setup.. Best of luck!

I have been using Autolaunch for years and know how to set it up so that it just works for me (I have a video on it) as a result I'm more than happy to trust my model to it almost all the time. If I can have a friend to launch it - that is a safer way to do it but sometimes there isn't a choice..

With the normal prop it'll pull about 4 to 5 amps in cruise. It is very efficient for its size...

What is the problem if the plane loose altitude in loiter mode?
