I'm a mason in Illinois, never done residential and I'm still new in the trade but what is supposed to be done up here to tie the wood to the blocks we would use J-hook anchors and bury them in the grout filled block cells. They stick out and have a threaded portion so when you set the wood over the block you just need a hole in every spot with an anchor and throw a washer and nut on it. I think that would be stronger with maybe a few of those straps thrown in every now and then
There are Js of rebar in that slab and the block walls. The straps just hold the roof down to the walls.

Cool video. Im building a 14x30 shop with half of it a room witha bathroom. One of my ideas is doing block walls and a framed roof like you showed in this video. But for my roof im thingking about a hip roof. i/m in the DFW area. In texas. we can get tornados where i live and this idea will make it withstand problally an EF3 tornado.
A hip roof is preferable in most ways to a gable roof. Gable roof construction is a bit less expensive than a hip due to needing less trusses and less labor in framing the roof structure but it is far better in high wind areas.

Would like to see the elrctrical rough in on a cmu wall. Cant find a clear video of it
• How high do you take the block before you fill it with concrete?
• Does it require an inspector each time you fill a portion of the wall for him having to perform a slump test? (can't imagine filling in just one pour for a two story house, for example)
• Do you get people that want houses built on a crawl space? That means no slab to put the framing on. What then do you place it on? A second, inner foundation wall? Masonry hangers cost like $200 from what I've seen, if you were to hang joists in the block for a situation like I have described. Tens of thousands of dollars if you used them. Expensive.
Only certain cells and the top course or two get filled. They all get poured at the end unless there’s a stem wall which is usually pored solid. But that’s done all at once too.
In FL on residential slump isn’t highly regulated as there’s a large degree of stress tolerance (in other word, everything is wildly over engineered)
We do. Hangers aren’t that expensive in my experience. Maybe $10-15 a piece for big ones. We do get people who do exact that (there’s more slab on grad where and I recommend that) Sometimes people want the crawl space or even finished storage with a slab under the house

Hi, I'm about to build a 24'x24' room in my backyard in Nashville for music production. I'm planning on using cinder block (filled) and then framing after a 2" air gap to help prevent sound leakage for my neighbors. Only one long window up high like yours. Will have a shed roof from 10' to 14' approx. How much (ballpark) can I expect it to cost for the block walls? What size was this one? Thanks!
This was about a 750 sq ft garage. From dirt to block walls with a roof on the structure was about $50,000 but that is Florida (Tampa Area) pricing. Pricing can vary significantly. Typically in most areas of Tennessee construction is less regulated so costs can be lower. However there is currently a shortage of construction materials so prices are very unpredictable. For the last few months I have traveled in Mexico. Many residential houses have flat roofs with rooftop terraces with tiled floors/roofs. I rented an Airbnb with a rooftop terrace and really like it. It has a covered portion for super sunny times and lots of room (basically the size of the house). Could you build a home with a flat roof and rooftop terrace in Florida under code? How did you accomplish the corners? Are they poured? In Puerto Rico it seems like most set pillars and the block meets at the pillar in each corner. Trying to figure out the most effective way for my build
Yes we poured the corner cell and 1 cell on either side. They also get a piece of #5 all the way down tied into the footer
Thank you for your video I'm trying to resolve an issue in my house and dying to find out what is behind the stucco above my garage doors. My roof has a very very high pitch compared to the one in your video. I think it's something like 6.5. the pointy part of the gabled roof is directly over the garage and I know that it can't be concrete block up there above the garage opening. So what is it? I have those same plastic soffit inserts at the peak of the roof in the middle of the garage coming down to 8 ft height on the sides. What is behind the plastic inserts in the soffit? If rain is hitting the house sideways head on what stops water from going inside the plastic soffit and coming in behind the wall? Is the wall wood above the concrete block? I would appreciate seeing the rest of that video where you finish the wall up to the roof behind the soffit. What makes it watertight where the wall meets the soffit or the roof? I have a hairline crack horizontally in two places above the garage. The painters just want to calk the crack in the stucco and paint the house. But because I don't know what's behind the stucco or what is causing the waviness in that area, I'm tempted to rip it all off to see what's behind it and if something was done improperly that I could fix and have restuccoed. I don't have the knowledge in construction to know what's behind that stucco in a concrete block house with a 6-in pitch roof but I know it's a wood frame on top of concrete block just like yours in the video. I've never seen plastic soffits before I bought this house. Can water get in there? 🤔 I'm assuming it can especially if it rains in front of the house and the wind's blowing towards the front of the house or if you pressure wash the house and soffit. So I guess I'm trying to find out how that wall is sealed between the roof and the concrete block before the stucco veneer is applied? I greatly appreciate your feedback. Typically the wall goes up behind the soffits and the soffits are resting on a piece of “j-channel” that’s attached to the wall. Even rain going vertical can’t get up into the wall.
The only typical way you get water behind the wall is if the roof leaks

I needed to see the footing beam that the roof rests on. It rests on top of the cinderblocks. How is that attached? On the floor, its drilled right into the concrete. But the blocks, if they're not filled there's nothing to drill into. Does it only rest on the top blocks ?
The beam is usually made of U shaped blocks that get poured solid. They get mortared onto the blocks below and there is rebar that ties it together
How do you attach the roof to the concrete?
You use straps that are embedded in the concrete and wrap around the wood trusses

Absolutely!
How is the top plate attached to the blocks?
Hey Jeremy, we used tapcons to attach a 2x8 PT to the top of the block wall. This goes all the way around the block walls. Then the trusses and rafters are strapped to the block and toenailed into the 2x8. The beam is bucketed into the block walls.

It depends on where you live for both questions!
Put cost on a project of this size in Tampa bay is about $70,000 (about 475 sq ft block garage).
In our area you only have to use a GC if the property is jot your primary residence.

how roof is attached to the blocks?
Rafters and trusses sit on the top of the block wall and get held down with metal straps

Anyone know what LVL would be if made from like 12 peices of plywood? Like full 2" x12 or 14, is that for beams aswell( item was just given to me as extra it's just sitting on racks in my garage lol
Yes that would be an LVL. They can be that exact size and are made out of sheets of plywood all glued together
why not steel roof trusses ( no rot /termite and fire resistant ) ??

@@Mobakar You install furring strips onto the block. They are nailed in with masonry nails using a gun called a T nailer. Then you insulate with foam insulation and install the drywall screwing it into the furring strips.
How much for total build?
Around 80k for that one. Probably closer to 100k now with increased prices

Why not just build forms and pour a solid concrete wall? Sure it’s more expensive but it won’t go anywhere in a hurricane… well the wood stick roof is still coming off .. but an 8” thick concrete wall will withstand a whole lot more

Aluminum soffit how does that make hurricane code ,that's gone @ 60,70 mph and if the code is about protecting your home why do all builders in fla put interior drywall on exterior ceilings and use interior drywall mud to finish it,😉

Wrong that is not a concrete block that is a haydite block and some people say no they're heavier than haydite that's because there's two ways to make them one they leave them light and fluffy. two they have a machine that shakes them making them heavier by taking all air bubbles out and that's so crazy he's talking about that lentil we frame Inwood then lay are you block across it put Steel in concrete across it or mortar go to the next course you don't use a solid piece unless you don't know what you're doing and these guys are clueless
