- I read once that great literature often doesn’t provide answers to life’s questions, it poses the questions. I’ve been wondering what Shakespeare tries to ask and explore in the story of Richard II. What makes a king? What marks out a king from an ordinary human being? Here's Richard II episode two!

Having listened to your thoughts on Richard II, I reconsidered my interpretation of the play.
Is Shakespeare showing, with the development of Richard's humanity, Richard's personal redemption?
Richard's rule declines and he is more human, while Bolingbrook becomes the ruler.
Bolingbrook never ceases to feel guilt about how he got the throne, even as an old man in Henry IV.
I strongly suspect Richard II is a rehearsal for King Lear, where a foolish monarch suffers into self knowledge.
Ah yes 'personal redemption'. It probably needs another essay!
Does he - interesting. I shall look out for it when I read Henry IV.
Yes self knowledge is definitely a theme. I haven't read King Lear. But will pay attention.

Fabulous analysis! I actually just read this play for the first time last year. It is my first Shakespeare since high school, haha. Tbh I didn't get as deep into the play as you did... I'm going to re-read it now with your analysis in mind. And then afterwards I am going to watch the David Tennant play to see if he was able to capture King Richard II's painfully human emotion and contradiction. Thank you for such a thoughtful video!
