I am fascinated by the level of development of Japan in the 1930s. Japan's contribution to human development is very much underappreciated especially among Asian countries, mainly due to the people still holding grudges because of WWII, and also the strong influence of the Chinese community.

Yet all was not gold in 1930s Japan. Rural Japan continued to be mired in abject poverty with little hopes of reform and improvement. The Middle Ages still dominated rural Japan and its growing inefficient agricultural lands. 1931 brought the addition of Manchuria with its natural resources to the empire. But by the late 1930s, Japan was mired in an unending war on the vast, endless China front, for which the Japanese People had not been educated as to its reasons and cause. Few Japanese understood why the Imperial Japanese Army was bogged down in China while Japanese military leaders and the censored press trumpeted continual victories. The people only knew that young Japanese drafted men went to China and never came back. Still, the Japanese People compliantly and pliantly obeyed their leaders without question or complaint. All the while, the Japanese military government slowly prepared the Japanese People for an impending war with Great Britain and the United States. The 1930s would begin in trouble and doubt because of the global Great Depression and would end the same way at the end of 1939 as the world plunged into a second world war.

Japan's once impoverished rural villages developed rapidly between the late 1950s and early 1960s, and achieved a prosperous lifestyle.
