This fall, I will be moving out of my parents place and don’t have an apartment readily available. Due to the circumstances, I can’t be there much longer and have decided to be homeless and will be spending all my money on a small suv to make myself more room. Thank you so much for this video. I really appreciate it.
Sorry to hear about the bummer circumstances man, but make the most of it; it can definitely be a fun experience and a season of life to learn and grow from. Glad you found the video helpful, thanks for the comment! Best of luck to you!
Hope everything does well for you I am about to be homeless with my girlfriend here soon
My parents are kicking me out of the house and I have nowhere to go right now. I really appreciate this video, it's very cold outside.
So sorry to hear that and glad the video helped! For what it's worth, just know that you're not the sum of your relationship with your parents or your current status! You're so valuable to this world, but the extent of that is also up to you and what you choose to make it! Wishing you the best!
I'm in the same boat as you buddy.
Same here man, I wish you the best my friend
My biggest tip is to hide in plain sight by any means nomatter what don’t ever deceive yourself and feel completely safe anywhere. unfortunately we live in a time where people are so numb and brain dead from general overstimulation of our good feeling chemical receptors people like to be in each others business as much as possible without regard for their own life just to feel something. As soon as you stick out i guarantee someone will come stick their nose in your business. It’s the ugliest thing I’ve noticed about humans since I’ve not lived by traditional means.
@@spicychinchin6597 try being 68 and not having a job with only 900 coming in and a $100 increase in rent...not much fun either.
Maybe you should have helped out more maybe you should have cleaned up more maybe you should have shipped in and had real conversations about that. But be well what ever you decide.
I bought my first car two months ago and I’m about to do this when I get my licence, I have a learners permit right now and my road test for my full licence is only a month away, so as soon as I pass my test I am hitting the highway and getting lost for a month or two. I’ve been living on a little island with about 5000 people for 26 years and have never left once, I’ve never seen anything in the world. I can’t wait to get out there and go on an adventure all alone, just me and the open road.
A friendly attitude goes a long way to getting places to stay. If you and your vehicle look clean and tidy and you have a welcoming friendly happy attitude then this goes a long way to getting you camp sites.
My Xterra is great for sleeping. Has enough room to sit up in bed. But they don't make them anymore. I have curtains so no one can tell if I am in the car or not. My keys are security. They hang above me like yours. I would push the alarm button if needed. I also have bear spray which works on people too. I find a place for a shower every 3 days - makes life more pleasant. I look at it as, well it is much cheaper than a motel room. I keep warm with an insulated REI air mattress topped with a 5 inch memory foam mattress and sleeping bag. If that is not enough I have wool blankets. Thanks for the video, good to hear others ideas on all this. Sorry some are so picky. I guess you have a lot of English and speech professors needing to sleep in their cars.
@@cpmondello lucky you. Great vehicle.
John, how do u do your curtains?
For cooking, you could try the hot logic mini oven. You can plug it in to your cigarette lighter and heat up or cook just about anything while your driving.
I’ve been living in my 2010 Toyota Corolla since July 27 of 2018 .. and honestly I kind of like it 🤗🤗
The only downside is the heat but since it’s getting colder it’ll be much easier ❤️❤️
Well times ain't great not gunna lie anyone alse out there in the same boat as me remember the are plenty of people in the same boat keep your heads up folks

this is very helpful, thanks a lot...just started living in my car because moved cities and don't have the rent money but ya it gets a little paranormal at times but definitely doable
Great, so glad you found it helpful Violet! Thanks for the encouragement! Best of luck to you!
Great video.... My friend from California moved to Florida he is sleeping/living out of his car until he finds work and the cops always knock on his window. they make him get out the car, check his car. He don't mind letting them check his car but he hates that this always happens to him. I think it is because he is a young black man with super long dreads
It's not because hes black or his hairstyle
if you want to have cereal in the morning then I suggest Parmalat Milk as it doesn't need to be put in the fridge as it's shelf-stable, it does go bad after it's opened but it's in a carton that's only 32oz. so it will most likely be gone before then
I've had that milk B4, and it's not that bad either especially when it's cold
Gee whiz, have you heard of dry (powdered) milk? Weighs nearly nothing and you have water with you anyway. Use 3x water to 1x dry -- less for "skim". A small amount of sugar (1/4 tsp), about same of vanilla flav, and a dash of salt depending on the amount of chilled water makes a huge difference in taste! Play with the amts till you get what you like.

Hi
Regarding hygiene, use a spray bottle with water for the small tasks such as washing your hands or face and use a bigger garden pressure sprayer for a shower. You have a back hatch on the car, just tie a tarp around the hatch and you will have a shower cabin preventing insight and just shower away.
I need more details please
Had a few setbacks recently and thinking of ways to save on money, definitely considering this. Thanks for the tips!
How did it work out for you?
David has provided some invaluable information that I wished everyone appreciated as much as I did. Instead, there seem to be a few who overlook the value and choose to focus on counting "ums". He could not be more gracious in his responses to the undue criticism. If the next critic would just read all the comments he'd see that it is totally unnecessary to continue pointing out what David has already acknowledged. David, good job. You provide a great service in how to make the most of the space for curious first-timers.
Hi, enjoyed your video, i have a Ford Explorer just about all set up to travel in. I have looked at alot of videos on youtube and used some of the ideas from them and some of my own. I am 77, been retired from driving semi truck for 11 years, i have seen all lower 48 states through a windshield, now it's time to take to the road and stop when i want to really see the great USA.
I started sleeping in my car on road trips because motels seem like a waste of money. I found a Serta baby crib mattress that works well for me since I’m only 5’1”. I keep it in my Subaru Crosstrek while traveling and get great nights sleep. Great tips, thanks!

I'm a web designer and photographer I live in my car, I love it, the air is good, I do camp near the beach with other tourist people, I read, work and goto the gym for showers. get a spare key and hide it will save your neck. I eat fruit and fish and eat out sometimes. I wash at the laundry, cool video.
Your video has been very helpful. I am a widow in my 60s and just finished a RT drive from So CA to MN. It wasn’t easy but I found out I want to do more. It was me and Daisy. If anyone even came near when I was sleeping she would let me know. So I slept in peace. I asked one police officer gassing up in Nebraska if he could direct me to a park so I could rest for a few hours Undisturbed and he was happy to help. He even took note of my car so that if anyone called in he knew who they were talking about. I caught rain on the way north and COLD and wind going south so rest areas were helpful but the car got cold pretty fast and cooking was out of the question. I need to figure out the cooking part of it as a person can only handle a 3 course breakfast at Denny’s (Provo UT) so often. I only used a motel once on way south in Primm NV and had an allergic reaction to the bed sheets apparently from the dryer sheets. So I used my sleeping bag. I definitely have to be self contained to be able to do this. Thank you again for your practical info.
this has been my very favorite "how to live out of your car" helpful videos. thanks!
As the seasons change you should try staying more in the mountains to avoid the hot weather. The mountains in the summer and the south in winter.
Yeah, that's also a good point for people to consider as an option. Thanks Mickey
@@DavidWahlman
Pretty much live in my Forester go to the mountains in summer and low desert in winter, sleep on a $8 twin Intex air mattress from Walmart angled from behind the drivers seat (pushed all the way forward when stopped) to the back right wheel area for extra room. I'm about 5'10 and there's plenty of room which surprised me cause always used to use a tent to sleep in. Don't even have to let all the air out of the air mattress when ready to go just a little and move the drivers seat back and ready to go. The air mattress seem to last about 6 months before something goes wrong and have to get a new one at Walmart for $8 use the old one under the new for protection and always have an $8 spare on hand. Never have spent the night at Walmart before guess I could if I had to, seems like there was a movie about that with Natile Portman about 20 years ago. Well happy adventures to you.

This is the most passive aggressive comment I have seen so far
@ZeroFollowers you win the most passive aggressive comment prize! I am sorry
I really appreciate this video! It’s been a dream of mine for a long time to do a cross country road trip and visit different national parks. Financially, I just wouldn’t be able to pull off staying in motels or air bnbs so I feel like if I ever wanted to accomplish this I’d have to sleep in my car. This makes it seem less daunting and scary, I really enjoyed this!
I have a Jeep and with the seats folded down it leaves a gap as well. I use a small 1/4 inch thickness piece of plywd just to span the space. Whatever is on top holds it in place nicely. The space itself can be used for seldom used items.
When staying in plan view (towns) I find it works well to get yourself and vehicle ready for sleep at a different location then go to you selected sleeping location, park, go to sleep. That way your all done in five minutes rather than all the activity that might get the neighbours curious. Now you appear to be just another parked vehicle. Stealth!!
Stay safe, carry a good sized stick in the vehicle with you. I prefer a solid walking cane that is able to be used for defence if need be against animals and humans.
Ciao
Your most welcome, you seem like a smart guy and a hard worker. A combination for success. Best of luck.
I keep a Shepard’s crook, I can round my collie in, hike with it and it does work well for self defence, I like your idea to get ready at a different location
used political signage, the corrugated plastic kind, cut out window dimension a tad larger flexes and stays under natural tension in place and sprayed black makes great easy to install shades and free.
I’m being kicked out from my home and will be living with my grandma hopefully for a month or so before I have to resort to this, I’m scared but also it’s always been my dream to do this.
How'd it go Max?
A spray bottle with eucalyptus oil is anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal and anti-microbial.. If you can park for a short while open the car up and spray down surfaces, it will keep it nice and fresh. Just make sure it won't damage the surface first. Another one you can use is vinegar and water, just keep in mind it does stink for a few hours and is acidic.
There's a heap of things I could suggest but most are found out pretty fast once you live on the road as I am sure you know.
I am about to hit the road again, this time I am considering getting a 120-150w solar panel and a peltier cooler. It's not perfect, but it's enough to keep perishables for a few days or longer, therefore improving my quality of life. I estimated the cost at 150-200$ with a battery "buffer". That would keep my devices charged as well. In case people do not know, car batteries are not good for solar or general use. You can kill them in a couple of months through constant use, they are about the worst choice you can make for a solar battery.
I also saw someone use a military cot/stretcher as a bed and the under bed storage tubs fit nicely beneath it, that could be an alternative to building a storage platform.
Something I am going to be doing that I have not heard anyone else do is to utilise the OBD (On board diagnostics port) on the vehicle to check for any errors/problems and to monitor the vehicle. There's bluetooth versions available for a few dollars that connect with your phone/tablet/computer and display running parameters and let you use it as a trip computer etc. If one of the o2 sensors goes and you don't know it, your fuel consumption will increase. Most people find current or past errors when they buy one. It can save you a fortune as it can warn of problems well before a breakdown occurs.
Also, nice video. Enjoy your trip/s.
Miss, can u post links to these things to make it easier to know which one s u like ?
@@susan4yahshua The solar? It won't help as I am in a remote area and product availability varies.
What is important is to know your power needs and over provision those. Once you know the electricity needs you can calculate the battery and regulator needs. I choose to stay on 12v, I don't need an inverter, that way I use less power... but that won't suit everyone. You even have to factor in the efficiency of the panels and your seasonal daylight hours.
This is one of the most informative videos I have ever watch . Thank you . I have slept in my car many times for various reasons , including if my husband comes home drunk. But sometimes I knock out cold and only the sun light wakes me up and sometimes I just sleep an hour or 2 from pure paranoia. But I like the head rest idea. But guys what are the 3 best vehicles for getting a comfortable sleep. Just great to know.
They also sell shower wipes. They work well. Kinda like a baby wipe but cleans better and more durable. A company called Dude Wipes makes large sized shower wipes. But I got a pack of 48 at my local grocery store.
Hey! Thanks a lot for this video, it's super helpful! Me and my dad are planning on going on a road trip and this is exactly what we needed to see to "make sure" it's a good idea!
You've been doing this for one month. I've been living in my little RV for 14 years. Let me give you some pointers. First, change your cook stove to a One burner COLEMAN stove that takes a butane cannister.
Buy frozen cornish hen at Walmart. They sell for Around $2.00 dollars. You can cook for about 3 weeks with one cannister of butane. Next, showering... buy a garden sprayer, go buy an RV shower head with hose at Mennards, Home Depot, Ace Hardware, Lowe's or Wal Mart. Remove the hose that comes with the garden sprayer and install the longer RV shower hose with a hose clamp. Boill a kettle of water on a man-fashionef burning hole you dig in the ground and use sticks under a grille, or a kettle of water on your little one burner cook stove . Pour it into the garden sprayer ... just warm up a second kettle if water and pour into the garden sprayer with the hot water you put in from the first kettle. You're good to go! Pump up the garden sprayer and it works just like a shower and the pressure lasts a loooong time. ENJOY YOUR SHOWER LADIES! 😎
WHERE TO STAY ... It can be dangerous staying on secluded roads. What are you going to do if some maniac comes up to your vehicle in the middle if the night with a gun? Remember they can shoot you right through your glass! Carry a shotgun or rifle! You don't need a gun permit for them. DO NOT DRIVE WITH THEM LOADED!!"
If you get pulled over for a traffic stop and a cop spots you shotgun or rifle and it's loaded you will be arrested for "carrying a loaded firearm in a public place" So, load your gun when you go to bed at night! This vehicle is your "home" You have every right to protect yourself while you are in your "home!" Don't even think soneone won't try to rob you ... eventually they will! When you fire a warning shot with a shot gun they will most likely run like hell!! You can stay at truck stops, rest areas, blend in at night in motel, hotel parking lots. I've found Hotels the have electrical oulets on the outsideof their buildings right by parking spaces, backed my RV in between cars, pluggef my extension cord into their outlet and ran my heater and TV all night and noone ever knew it. I have a CLASS B RV which is a small van-size RV, so I can blend right in with cars in parking lots on college campuses, parks, Hotels, Motels, Supermarkets, and at TRUCK STOPS RVs can get buy with parking out where the trucks park, or park up where the cars are parked ... you have more options at TRUCK STOPS.
Also, out of town you can park at REST AREAS. Pennsylvania and Ohio have free showers at alot of their TRAVEL PLAZAs and REST AREAS. You can park along secluded country roads and highways in the country and never be noticed but it can be dangerous.
Thank you for this! Really excited to start living off my cr-v next 3 months :D

Hey! What are your thoughts about living and working out of your vehicle, while only staying in only one area? Personally, I am very tight on cash, but looking for a new start. I have traveled and lived out of my car before with success, but I am apprehensive about being in one location. What is your input? Tips?
Hey PeopleAtStake, I think it's totally doable. It was actually part of my original intent before my big roadtrip. The benefit of being in one city is that you get to know the best spots really well and it allows you to hold a consistent job. The only thing I'd caution on is always parking in the same spot. Unless you find the perfect spot where literally no one cares, you should move around so people don't bug you about it. Best of luck!
peopleatstake hello your post caught my attention my situation is simular not traveling but living in one location my lease is up in 2 month's considering living out of my car ,any suggestions?
I'm making this decision as well. What I've found is that you should park/sleep away from your job. Like maybe drive 15-20 minutes away? Not always but most nights. Invest in a good pillow. Memory foam!! Park in a place you can use the restroom or near what you want to do in the morning. Unlimited wifi and a hotspot can give you your laptop on the go.
There were a couple months a few years ago that i was essentially living out of my car (w/ my cat). We were traveling a lot. So it wasnt necessarily LIVING out of my car, but basically . . . (I showered at gyms that offered free weekly/daily passes, friends houses, and at beach showers when near a lake or ocean. . . I would take my cat to the park to let her run around (she was more like a dog. She would hop back into the car when Id tell her it was time to go) . . . But I always liked to park overnight in hospital parking lots. Ive stayed 4 or 5 nights in the same hospital before too. I figure that (not that I want to advocate taking advantage of people suffering the loss or illness of loved ones) but I figured that it wouldn't be uncommon for people to sleep in their cars out in the parking lot if a loved one is in the hospital and they need to get sleep but don't really want to leave. And if I saw someone sleeping in their car in a hospital parking lot (as long as the car doesn't look like a POS or anything) that's what my first thought would be. . . I wouldn't dare want to question them during a time of grief. . . I realize that is sort of shitty to play on one's emotions. But I was never told I couldn't or ever even questioned. .
It's not a terrible thought though and one I hadn't ever thought about. Personally, I wouldn't feel bad about sleeping in the parking lot; the only way I think you'd be 'taking advantage of people's scenarios' is if you were questioned on it and lied about it, but a parking lot is for the most part still a parking lot. Thanks for sharing!

David, I commented a few weeks ago when yours was one of fewer than a handful of videos I discovered and am overwriting a second one in which I was unusually harsh in criticism of you not demonstrating your techniques. You accurately advised there were many who did which I have found a true statement. In rewatching, I will say that you stay on point with the 5 suggestions in your opening. And after watching more than 50 videos, coming back to yours, your tips are nevertheless good for beginners taking notes.
Hi there mate.

Wow...a polite, gracious person on RUclips...i agree 100%.
Bathing in a stream can be invigorating if the water is cool and does get you clean enough. Of coarse here in WV we do not have a shortage of streams, as some parts.
David, this is really incredibly awesome information for so many people that are out on the road permanently or for a really long time.
Great video man, very informative and extremely helpful! I'm considering doing some traveling across the US, moving from place to place every few days. Hearing about your experiences has definitely given me more of a desire to give it a shot. Thank you! I'm a bit apprehensive, but I feel motivated to just DO IT! 🔥

Can you recommend an app for car dwellers?
I've been playing with the idea of living in my van full time. This weekend my kids and I went down to the keys in florida and slept in the van. I loved it other than the stinking heat and the war we had with the mosquitos. We won btw. The paranoia of someone knocking on the window is real. I bought the camping bunk bed and it actually fit in my van and of course i had 2 of those fans. Ok im ranting.... loved the video and suggestions 😊
This is a great idea for all the weekend ski trips I go on!
How warm does your forester keep you? When it's below freezing temperature, I notice that water bottles that are left in my car freeze over. Does body heat get trapped in the car, is that what keeps you warm?
I have a WRX so I'm very familiar with how skimpy Subaru insulation is. I'm planning to switch to a Forester XT at some point, it's good to know I can sleep back there :P You compelled me to do some research on cargo space, the 2014 and up have 79 inches (6 foot, 5 inch).
David Wahlman Photography thanks for the reply. Car camping seems like a much more affordable option compared to spending $200 a night at a motel 6. I have 0 degree sleeping bags. Thanks for the tip!
I actually was at the dealership last night. Aside from the light off-roading and 14.2sec quarter mile videos...Your video is also one of the reasons I'm trading in my wrx for a Forester XT. So thank you sir!
David Wahlman Photography in stock form the Forester XT is slower. But with a stage 1tune & in stock form, the Forester will do 0-60 in 4.9seconds and do the quarter mile in 14.2.
So far the newer FA engines are holding up much better to more power. I left my WRX stock because of the stories of blown head gaskets and ringland failure.
Im not completely sure if I will get the Forester tuned, but it's nice to know that option is there 😬
Kurt M. I ended up purchasing the Forester XT and I've slept in it 3 times already, all in about 30 degree weather.
I watched the video you linked. Good clip, and very informative. I found it interesting you first had a 4Runner and then switched to the Prius. I chose the Forester XT because it's a good mix of performance and fuel economy. Being able to turn on the engine and have it cycle on and off for about $3 worth in fuel sounds like a great luxury, as Ive woke up in the middle of the night, thirsty and cold. Taking a gulp of freezing water made things even colder.
My vehicle has remote start. I never use it and took the remote off my key chain (so I can have a lighter key chain). From what I understand, remote start will will last for 10 minutes then turn off. Maybe I'll try it out my next trip.

Top tip for car campers, get outside of inner city limits. I got kicked out of Grass Valley CA first time caught. Brutal, wish I had it on tape.
You need to know where you are. Grass Valley is a Tourist Trap and the small town that's revinew comes from visitors being able to park and go to the restaurants, shops and theaters. I found this video really informative. You're insanely likable and relatable. You're humble and I enjoyed your shy nature when discussing the baby wipes. Great tips and tricks.
In terms of keeping your keys handy or in a place where you can reach out in case of an emergency and more importantly keep the driver seat at the correct position although you might lose a little head room when laying down but what I've done is the ply board for the bedding you can always have it cut out into a L shape and between the front seat and back on the floor I've put a container to the fit the floor space and used it for storage and that will support your head when laying down
I did all that in a Ford Fiesta

Baby wipes! Traded like currency, if you're in the military (like infantry) in a foreign country.
Great info, David. Thanks for putting the list together. I've been exploring the idea of living outta my truck. Here, in the Silicon Valley/SF Bay Area, it's ridiculously expensive. "Car Camping" is becoming more and more popular. I'm noticing a lot of "regulars" overnighting near 24-Hour Fitness gyms.
Finally, yes, if you ever wanted to donate anything to our servicemen & women (during wartime operations), you know... to truly "support our troops," donate baby wipes!! Young adults in the military are basically earning minimum wage until they get promoted a few pay grades.
They use the baby wipes to clean themselves. It's hot over there fungus grows fast.
What do you do about ventilation when you sleep?
David, What do you think the best way to stay cool in the hot and humid summer nights would be? Do you know of any battery operated fans or ac systems?
David, I really hope and pray somebody invents a battery operated fan that puts out heat and cool air. As much it cost to run a car (gas, insurance, tags, repairs, inspection, personal property taxes) you might as well learn how to live in it. That would make life bearable for people who are car camping or homeless.
B Strong Walmart sells battery operated fans, but run off 8 D batteries.
David Wahlman Photography I have a fan that runs on batteries or an a/C adapter plug. Batteries get expensive, so the battery pack would work great. I got back it at Walmart. I'll try and remember tomorrow to get the name and maybe a pic up.
Very informative video cheers I'm ready for off soon too in the uk
Glad you found it helpful Christine! Best of luck!
@@DavidWahlman thankyou
Very helpful video! Thanks!
This is an incredibly informative video!! Thank you so much!! 😃🙏🏼
Hey Mindy, so glad you found it helpful! Thanks for the encouragement!
Great info! I am going to be leaving my job and traveling the US living in some sort of vehicle. I don't know what yet...but something!
Well done fella.really good information.explained really well.i also lived in my car for a good two years so I know it can be done.but hey if you have low budget .at least it’s still a home. Goodluck.uk 🇬🇧
This is so cool and actually a more affordable option I have been thinking about cause I want to travel more but my question is what's it like living in your car when you have a normal type job that you have to work regular long hours? Getting rest? Not showering as much as you would living in a home ect..
Great job. Wonderful info.
HI David. How do you keep the interior of the car ventilated during the winter ans summer and with mosquito's??
thanks it does....
I unfortunately live in my truck its tough but it's a roof over my head
How do you not get caught? Where do you park? Water? Food?
Hi same
Thank you for this! The 21st Century "tiny house"!
Very nice video i subed Eager for more getting ready to start my Adventure...
Great video man! You seem so kind haha. Very informative thanks a lot! :)
I'm in CT and leaving as well
Same. I got out of a bad situation and into another one. Thought I'd get a job out here where my parents are but no dice.
Planet fitness membership $10.00 a month comes out to $2.50 a week or .35 cents a day.
Planet Fitness is a little more than that if you are moving around at all, because the $10 Membership is for one location only. Even at the $23/mth price though, it is the best deal around. I have seen the truck stops charge nearly that much for a single shower. No thanks!
@@sarahereach17.00 at Pilot for a shower. I joined planet fitness because I went broke from the truck stop
Lots of good advice. Thank you so much. I didn't quite get the name of the towel you like to use . Best wishes to you.
really interesting and informative , you have a calming voice, thanks from manhattan, nyc , i will tell my friends to subscribe, please upload more frequently !
Could you take a swim at the local pool once or twice per week? I like to water jog twice per week at my local pool. I'm just a vacation camper. Happy trails.
Wow, I wish you would have emptied your vehicle and actually SHOWED how things are, especially your sleeping situation with you're sleeping completely laid out.

This was helpful, I have the exact same Subaru and this kinds have me a good heading on what to do 👌
If you're hot at night a tip that may work is to wet some thick socks and wrong them out so they're just damp. Put them on your feet and you'll feel cooler.
My fiance and i are going to be happy homeless nomads traveling the country. I am so excited to find out other people are doing vids on this.thanks for making this vid. Curtains are the thing i was trying to figure out... i had thought of velcro. Have you thought of something better yet?
Hey Paige, so glad you found it helpful. No, I haven't really found a better solution per-say. I don't like actual curtains, because they hang down, getting more in the way than anything else, so I like something that sticks in close contact to the glass. I still think my 'to-shape-cut' windshield visor is perfect. It's folds up when not in use and is very light. Just find a black one or spray paint one side.
I personally found that the little adhesive velcro tabs I was using at the time did not stick to the glass very well and would detach before the velcro would, especially as time went on and as they got more worn. They were small and both male and female sides were the same physical size. I did eventually get some bigger patches with more adhesive, but then made the mating velcro piece much smaller so that it would hold it there, but detach easier while keeping the larger adhesive piece on the window. That worked well.
I've also seen people who add button snaps to their car and block-out material, which is much more solid, but also much more permanent and a lot more work for initial install.
Hope that helps a bit!
@@DavidWahlman Did you ever thought about reflectix? I made some on my own for winter camping..they fit perfectly on every window and are stuck between door and car frame.. no hanging around ruclips.net/video/fAkmBrY_lXc/видео.html
@@DavidWahlman hey
this is semi ....crazy but I noticed someone who purchased 8 bath tub Matt's...They got them at the $ Store so the entire purchase was just 8$ and they got BLACK of course and they stuck them to the windows so they cud quickly pull off next day .
@@PaulaRamsey-t9e Wow, that's pretty genius! The bath mats with the suction cups on the bottom? I love hearing how people think outside the box!
The bath mats sound like a good idea... I saw one person used magnets for attaching material to the side windows at least... not sure if that’s helpful but thanks to you both regardless
Awesome vid man, I'm trying to deck out my SUV to be able to camp and travel in. I've researched around and I have to say, I should've started off with this video. Thanks man!
I'm thinking about going on a road trip this summer, but what do you do for money? do you just pick up odd jobs or are you running off of savings?
I'm looking into phone farming but would need a place with good free internet connection
I have a class A cdl and use to drive truck over the road and when you buy 50 gal of diesel you get a free shower but when I'm just traveling in my SUV the showers have ranged from $7 to $10 at truckstops
Hillary Rockwell or walk into a campground and use the shower
There's a LOT of cities and counties that have made sleeping in your vehicle illegal, even if you're in a fully self-contained RV... especially on the east coast and west coast (OR/CA/WA).
Yup, I agree. This is a fairly common discussion in the BLM/Boondocking groups on Facebook. Usually started by someone who just got a ticket, or a rap on the window at 2am telling them to move along. :P LA county, San Diego, Santa Cruz, San Fran, etc... have all passed laws against sleeping in your car. There were many places in OR that didn't allow it (I asked at the gas station where to stay, they told me where I should Not stay! lol same thing in WA.
Force people into expensive rentals, no thanks.
How do you keep paying for gas, and car maintenance? Insurance?
Hey John, that answer is definitely going to vary from person to person, but in my case I was freelancing. Some people hold down a job in one city and just live in the car to save money and others are nomads, able to travel and still generate income via internet or remote work.
You gotta work, gotta get a job
Have you ever thought about making front seats rotating to the back of your car? That would let you have more inner space while not driving.
......thanx for the info 'bout organic corn starch and micro fiber cloths.......🙋♀️
Where do you find places to refill water, and what do you store water in?
Great video! I was wondering I am starting out at the end of April on my first SUV camping trip. I wanted to go up by Salem MA I guess my question is have you been up that way and if so do you know where some free camping longer term campsites are?
Thanks man! I traveled a bit last year to try new kayaking spots. I converted my equinox for travel. Removed back seat entirely and cut a double layer of plywood for bed. My front passenger seat folds forward so that was a good table. Used USB fans for ventilation and cut screens for windows and secured using thin dowels slightly larger than window frame and wedged them in w screen behind so I was able to have window open in any position. Dowels also worked great for reflectix mounting. My question is what do u sleep in? Weird question I know but I hate sleeping dressed but never got over the feeling of needing to be dressed in case something happened during the night. Did u ever have that issue? Btw the thought of that guy in your car at night freaks me out yikes haha! I'm glad all was ok w that encounter. Thanks again
David Wahlman Photography
Hi David. Yeah, the dowels were ideal. I tried Velcro, magnets, duct tape and even a custom made frame for my screen solutions. The dowels were the simplest, and quickest to set up and remove. Two dowels per window. Install horizontal. Cut slightly bigger than inside frame size. Put in screen or reflectix and wedge in the dowels. The k.i.s.s rule def applies here :b
And thanks for your response regarding sleeping. It's reassuring u don't worry. I guess I still feel vulnerable at times so like to be fully dressed and shoed...ready for combat haha. Take it easy man
I have used the electric plug in coolers with great success. I simply supplement the cooling ability with bags of ice. The way to prevent leaking is fill dromedary bags with the ice once a week. Used through Death Valley.
Wahlman Productions with this method you don’t have to run the cooler at night either. The end result is a bag of cool drinking or other use water which you need anyway
i dont get the dromedary bag tip. is the bag of ice the dromedary bag? i dont follow. and which electric plug in cooler do you find is energy efficient?
vonshango google msr dromedary bag. It’s a watertight lamented type bag like a camelback with 3 levels of water dispensing capabilities. You unscrew the biggest opening fill with ice and there you go. Manufacturer a wide funnel or buy. I just freestyle filling. Dromedary bags come in multiple sizes I have about 4 -10 liter bags and a few 5 liter bags. One bag of ice will fill about 2-10 liter bags and last about a week or more with an electric cooler. Depending on outside temperature. After that you are left with cold clean (hopefully) water. Then repeat.
I’ve had 2 igloo coolers. The kind that either cools or heats. As far as efficiency goes. You don’t need to run them at night if you’re sleeping in your vehicle. They will probably drain your vehicle battery. They have accessory to run off of AC power. Good luck 🍀
Could I do this for semesters in college? Money is tight and it’s far
And go home when they are over (the semester)with a car?
They have a gym with showers, and the library/cafe have plenty of outlets
If so what kind of car I don’t have much money to spent on a new one
David Wahlman Photography thanks!
But I had a used car and it is now beyond repair so don’t want to have to deal with similar issues that it gave me
David Wahlman Photography thanks!
My older one was 1999, but maybe something from after 2008?
I was thinking of doing Uber with it to
Hi, thank you so much for the video! I really appreciate it. I am planning on living in my jeep compass for a couple of months or so to save up some money. I live in Colorado and was looking at the state parks. I was thinking of paying an annual fee, which is about $70 and stay in the parking lot. I was thinking of this option because of the bathrooms and security. Do you think, this would be a nice option to go for? I am still freaking out about the whole parking situation 😅
Shashank Chevendra ...most state parks open and close their gates at sunrise and sunset and they charge for camping. A website like www.boondocking.org will provide free camping info.
Have you considered the national park pass?
Great tips!
Very nicely presented. Well done.
Thank you so much Mr. David!!! You have a lot of great tips.
Fantastic video much appreciated.
How often do you do your laundry?
How much clothes do you carry on hand? One weeks worth? Two weeks worth? I'm trying to gauge what is a reasonable amount of stuff to have with me as opposed to too much.
David Wahlman Photography fantastic thank you very much I just wanted to know approximately how many week's worth of clothes but it makes sense that you would prioritize based upon the space that you have. And I know exactly what you mean about non activity if you're just sitting in clothes all day and haven't really done anything active then yes of course those clothes can be used for another day. In my particular situation I'm not going to be doing a whole lot of traveling however because of the smallness of my car it might actually be beneficial for me to do laundry approximately once a week so that I'm not using up too much space or carrying too many clothes. A lot of my clothes fit in bins but some of them do not and so those clothes I have to kind of throw in my gym bag. Thank you again for all the information.
