NASCAR Champions & Stars Admit iRacing is Unrealistic

  • NASCAR's own champion hardly touches the game and thinks braking feels "weird", while their most recent road course winner and color commentator both wonder why their cars are almost impossible to control if any sort of slip angle is induced.
iRacing is promoted as the pinnacle of PC racing simulations and the most accurate depiction of race cars on a home computer, with a lengthy testimonials page featuring several pro drivers proclaiming it's usefulness as a training tool, yet when put on the spot, the greatest drivers in North America admit they can hardly complete a lap on it because it's so unrealistic.
    www.iracing.co...
For whatever reason, motorsports media and sim racing outlets seem completely uninterested in talking about this. You would think the industry leader in racing simulators being totally and completely inaccurate at every single track would be sort of a big deal, wouldn't you?

What I don't understand is that Nascar and iRacing have done these pro races for about a year now, and it seems like at no point did iRacing ever ask for driver feedback. Cause nothing has changed about how any of the Nascar cars handle on iRacing. It's very odd.

The funny thing (that not a lot of people want to hear about) is, that NR2003's physics were seemingly much closer back then, to how the old '03 Cup cars have handled IRL, than iRacing is today compared to their 2021 counterparts. But god forbid you say anything critical about iRacing. The community will go right after you, while cashing out 113 bucks a year, just to keep their paid content accessible. Quite sad to see the state the Sim Racing world is in today. But that applies to almost every branch nowadays, it's just the way things are apparently. The biggest difference and hardest thing for me in iRacing or just sim racing in general is how easy it is to lock up the brakes compared to a real car. Like chase said in most sims you cant feel the brake or the balance of the car at all and that makes it very easy to just lock up

people seems to forget the core of iracing is based on a 18 years old engine, nr 2003 is as old as live for speed and 2 years older than rfactor1. sure, it has been improved and refined over the years but the underlying technology is archaic if compared to modern sims.

This was delicious to watch, but in all honesty I'm still quite agnostic about how much weight to put on what real drivers say about sim racing cause it's not their domain. As an example, suppose you took one of the top MX5 drivers from real life and put them in say an Indycar or F1 car, they might not have any clue how to actually drive fast in it. So there's no reason to assume that any real life driver is going to know how to adapt to the sim. Regardless, I still believe iRacing has significant issues with physics.

It's for sure the best for it's multiplayer offering and competition. you don't even need to search if you want to race. Sure is not the best in class for driving feeling on many cars. That said i have to admit it has become way more forgiving lately. A big issue i think is the original FFB, quite muted. Since i'm using irffb i'm experiencing much less unrecoverable spins though. All in all it's not bad, it's just expensive compared to other sims that offer almost no multiplayer. Basically other sims don't offer such multiplayer service like iracing and let communities and leagues organize all. I am admin at a 700+ member community, and it's a lot of work to keep people involved and fill grids, i swear. PS: i play with all other sims as well. Iracing is offering a spot on racing organization, a service you have to pay, like you pay netflix or your mobile phone subscription.

Try driving actually fast in RFactor 2, slip angle of doom, impossible to spin out, pulling on the wheel and countersteering mid corner with 30 degrees slip angle in order to be fast is realistic?
All Sims have this particular issue of feeling great when youre taking it serious and try to drive how you expect race cars to drive, but fall apart once you pick up the pace ans notice the physics exploits you need to master in order to be fast fast.
This is true for Iracing, Rfactor 2, AC, ACC, R3E, AMS1, AMS2 etc.
It all depends on your personal choice of what kind of compromise you want to take on the realism, Do you like to overdrive the car but then have the issue of running into unrealistic amounts if slip angle without losing time, or rather under drive the car in a good multiplayer system but then Die when the tires are introduced to minimal oversteer.

That are MANY cars in rFactor 2 with which you absolutely can't do this but since there was an issue with GT3 tires, the whole simulation is crap ? It was just a tire model flaw that have been fixed for months now. And BTW, overturning the wheel doesn't imply a spin 100% of the time, it implies issues for sure but not as much as you think and the spin is not the most common one.
