    Hi Brian,
    I don't own any flexvolt but this does look really good especially with the new technology motor. It's all about new and improve. Maybe the design didn't change but look at Skil circular saws. It's design hasn't change but the technology did.
    I'm very happy that DeWalt is improving their 20v line with the power detect technology and new 21700 cells batteries.
    All these companies are improving so much with their technology. I do like my cordless but i still can't let go of my corded tools yet, LOL...

    First-thanks for your review. Wanted to see if there were any physical differences. Second-this can be a great tool for welders. Mostly in the field because you move around so much doing stuff not setup for a station. These 60v help a ton with keeping a mess of leads and cords untangled. If there’s a ton of grinding I’m digging for a corded 6” or even a 9 (8”). The hefty price tag doesn’t make it worth it to most. Third-take the handle off the grinder and grab the head. You can naturally place your body in a better position where you are not throwing sparks back at you. The only time I ever see someone use a handle is if they have a big wheel on and are grinding in a flat position. Lastly-be careful when applying max force with a tiger pad or an 1/8” wheel. They are not meant for that much downward pressure and are not pleasant when they come apart. Also-no strings on a hoodie.

    • @Comm0ut
      @Comm0ut Год назад

      I cut the strings off my hoodies for that reason.

    As someone who uses a grinder like me as it is my most used tool next to an impact and drill and needs the portability to take it from 10 to 40 feet in the air I love the flexvolt grinder and other tools as well. Ever since flexvolt was released i havent touched a corded tool since on the job site. Now i do have 5 9ah and 1 12ah battery at this point but one main factor that was a game changer for strictly cordless is the 4 port fast charger. I cant kill batteries as fast as this charges them up even if i try. The big thing with the dcg414 is even if the runtime isnt the best like you say the amount of grinding and cutting that can be done in that period of time is far superior to any1 else. I also have the dcg413f with the flathead. I wish they did that model with the power detect as well. I will for sure get this dcg418 asap and sell my 414 to a co worker that always buys my used tools lol.

      If you are willing to invest in batteries, you are correct, it is hard to beat this grinder.

    • @denisl2760
      @denisl2760 4 года назад +4

      I used the DCG414 for over a year now, my favorite tool I ever owned by far. I originally had 2 of the flexvolt batteries, when doing some heavy fab work, I'd occasionally run the battery down before the next one charged. Bought a third battery and I can work all day without having to worry about battery life.
      I'm building armored trucks, having to climb all over and under the truck, compared to a corded grinder this probably saved me at 2 hours a day.The only problem I have with this grinder is that everyone in the shop is always trying to borrow it.

    • @bossmanz28
      @bossmanz28 4 года назад

      @Jack Braddell this is 2020 who wants to worry about a cord and every job is not a lift sometimes ladders. At least for me. Plus i got tons of other tools too not jus a grinder.

    • @bossmanz28
      @bossmanz28 4 года назад

      @Jack Braddell everybody got there preference. I make enough money (not saying you dont) and sitting comfortably to have all cordless and prefer the convenience. Not all jobs have power or some places nearest outlet has too many other things on it and just keep tripping breakers. The cordless tools (the right ones) nowadays provide the power of high end corded models.

    • @bossmanz28
      @bossmanz28 4 года назад

      @Jack Braddell yea retail price is ridiculous for cordless i stick with ebay for batteries and certain kits and promos can be a good value. I rarely pay retail price for anything power tool wise unless its coming with "free" tools or batteries i can sell or need. Except for this grinder kit only $50 extra for 9ah and charger

    I agree with you 100% it’s great for small heavy duty jobs but not for large long term all day jobs unless you have 8 or more high output batteries to use during a 8 hour work day like contracting jobs

    Like the review. But what I use my cordless angle grinder for is small quick jobs. Might have to cut a piece of angle iron or something small. I use it with a sanding disc to buff stuff down and use a wire wheel to clean with too. It’s nice to have a cordless grinder to use on small stuff. I wouldn’t use it all day long because I would have to wait for the batteries to charge.

  • @shenyathewelder9695

    For me my cordless grinder is a fairly specialized tool, sometimes. If I need to climb up the Side of a unit I can tie it to my back and just go, slap on the disk at the top and do the job. With a corded grinder that would be far more dangerous. Of if I need to go all around the factory doing little grinding jobs, the cordless is far better. There’s also a lot of situations where I need to just make a quick grind and it’s better to just use the cordless one rather than serching all corners of the globe for an extension cord.
    HOWEVER, when I know I’m doing a lot of grinding in one place I always pull out the corded grinder and hunt down an extension cord.
    Also, unforeseen plus, I can charge my watch and phone off my used grinder batteries. Like even if it won’t run my grinder it’ll still charge my phone for a while. That was once the difference between having and not having a navigation system for my drive home in the rain.

      Runs better on the dcb609. New technology in the motor of the grinder with the new 21700 batteries in the 9 amp make a perfect pair. I've seen it myself on the jobsite. I also own one of these and 3 9ah batteries myself. It's both powerful and effective. I'm a welder by trade by the way. Still not totally sold on cordless grinders because of the power they use but with the 9ah they seem to do the best

    • @WorkshopAddict

      That is coming, but it is pretty simple. Power detect is a 20 volt only platform and it can tell the difference between 20-volt batteries and what amps they can produce. They can use FV batteries like any other 20 volt tool. Flexvolt tools can only use 60 volt FV batteries.

    • @WorkshopAddict
      @WorkshopAddict  4 года назад

      First, the old test was purely grinding. So the runtime was short at 3.5 mins. Battery op grinders are not great long term grinding machines. The Flexvolt 9.0 Ah battery is 3P so it has 15 cells and will last longer than the XR 8.0 Ah battery that is 2P and has 10 cells. Just how the test worked out.

      Not necessarily. The amount of current drawn is influenced in part by the amount of load on the tool. The amount of power of the previous model was already absurd, and it was unlikely to get loaded up to it's full capacity in normal use. The new one is even less likely to get loaded up to the limit. In normal use it will probably behave very similar, but it's got a bit of extra headroom should you give it to it.

      A good price target is $10 / Ah for batteries. If you buy in kits, on sale, or open box, you can usually get them for around $12 / Ah, at least for Milwaukee's batteries (I realize this is a Dewalt video). The higher capacities tend to have higher markups even on sale, so I'd look for under $14 / Ah.

    To be fair the battery is only a 3 amp hour in the 60v motor. It’s a true 9 amp hour in a 20v tool.

      @@louischenvert7080 Since you asked Ohms Law tells us that current is directly preportional to voltage. This means if you triple the voltage you get one third the amps for the same amount of actual wattage being produced.
      Basically amp hours is a stupid way to measure battery capacity. Amps are only one part of the equation, you need at least two (for example amps and volts) to figure out how much actual energy there is in the battery. This is why watt/hours is a far more useful measurement because it is an actual unit of work done over time, volts, amps, ect don't even need to be considered.
      Basically the Flexvolt batteries have exactly the same amount of watt/hours in them regardless of what config they are being used in.
      Flexvolt is a marketing ploy for the most part, because the exact same amount of energy could be drawn from the battery in 20v mode, it just means you would get idiots frying small batteries by putting them on a 2300w saw or something. It's clever, but the performance has little to do with the extra voltage, because you can design a 20v motor that puts out the same power, and you most certainly do not lose battery capacity in 60v mode, you just put it on a tool that's designed to use 1800w, or 2300w instead of the 700w you might be using on a particularly powerful 20v tool. Of course the battery won't last as long, but that's because you are using more energy. Battery has a set amount of energy stored regardless. It doesn't change.

      A S C E N D E D W H I T E M A L E Right. Without that long definition the point I was making is that regardless you are getting 180 max watts out of the battery. The 60v motor is just going to draw it a lot quicker. And the amp hour verbiage is simply because that’s how how the industry knows it.

    I had a lot of old pipes and rebar to cut up and from what I read ruclips.net/user/postUgkxPDBfLu68o58Aw85O_J-zIFfjJARBhp-3 this would be the tool for the job. Since I had never used one, I watched a couple of youtube videos and I'm so glad I did. Some really good safety tips, which I followed, and this tool did a splendid job. One good thing to know is the weight of the tool puts just about the right amount of pressure on the metal I was cutting, so I didn't have to use a lot of pressure, which is more likely to jam the tool. It made fast work of my job.

    No getting around the physics, but I think there’s a little bit more marketing than new tech going on here. From DeWalts website: “ **The DEWALT DCG418 with a DCB609 60V MAX* FLEXVOLT battery has up to 30% more power vs. DEWALT DCG414 with a DCB606 60V MAX* battery.” OK, what about if we put the 9.0 on the DCG414? I doubt there’s a 30% difference there.

I often refer to my 5ah batteries as the "turbochargers", they make my old tired impact driver sound like a freaking turbocharged sumbeech when it drives fasteners compared to the 3ah because you can hear the motor over the impacting while using them. But when using the 3ah, you only hear the impacting instead of the motor and it's noticeably longer to drive screws. Endorsed.
