@@succatash yeah esp for someone coming from a sport rooted in deep Japanese traditions ...but I think he has a different mindset (maybe a modern one) that's why he retired early so he can be what he wanted to be... I also got a tattoo in Japan as a remembrance after finishing masters..
What impresses me most is the respect and honesty between Sideburns and his attendant. It takes such wisdom and humility to beseach your juniors for ipinions and advice. Classy dude. Chris, thank you for working so hard to get here. These interviews are so dang good and I hope this guest really does mean you've got your foot in the door.
I really love getting a deeper insight into Sumo mindset, and Chiyotairyu's story was fascinating! We would've never known he had already bought a restaurant while STILL fighting in the top Division! Impressive!
Thank you Chris and thank you Chiotairyu. I am so glad to see retired rikishi who leaves sumo not broken and exhausted, but found a transition to next life. When I heard it was his dream - I was absolutely happy. Wish all the best in next career! ❤
Glad to see Mr Sideburns being happy and living his dream, wonderful that kokonoe was so supportive. It really makes a difference when you have a clear goal at the end. It was painful to see tochi quit cause he was losing strength, and kakuryu hanging on just to get his citizenship approved. 🎉🎉🎉 All in all a great cover story!! If you are reading this chiyotairyu - san, live your best life and all the best with your business!!
Chiyotairyu retired just when I was getting into sumo, so I never really knew him, but man! What a great video! It was really interesting to see his perspective.
@Chris Sumo I love these interviews. Getting to know the different wrestlers as individuals is a real highlight of the channel, and I also appreciate the hand delivered letters from fans. Chiyotairyu seems like a very modest, humble, down to earth guy. I bet you enjoyed sitting down to talk with him as much as we all enjoy watching the interview. Keep up the awesome work with the channel!
This is a fantastic interview, and Chiyotairyu is clearly a genial and ebullient type. Thanks so much for pressing forward with this kind of content, Chris. I'm enjoying the new direction and hope to get to know many more retired sumo wrestlers in their new lives.
I commented on many of the matches of Chiyotairyu. He tended to have a strong opening charge but if he did not win inside of 10 seconds he always seemed to run out of energy. He also had shaky balance and often fell forward while trying to execute his charge. He had 1 of the fastest hikiotoshi I had ever seen but he did not often get into position to execute it.
A very nice interview with a man who had the explosiveness and strength, if not the belt technique. He would win in 3 seconds or he would lose. I enjoyed his bouts. I hope to eat a good meal in Meat Land Yakiniku one day.
Oh man, I can understand Chiotairyu so well!!! When I retired from american football at 33 it was pretty much a similiar decision. After 30, there is some magic wall you hit. You're still in great shape, your experience matches young strength with ease and you will always make sure that every opponent you face WILL respect you. But at the end of the match you ain't celebrating anymore, or at least just mildly. While hitting tha gym one and a half day later before, you just realize you need more time to regenerate. You treat your over time ammassed injuries with a different seriousness and take good care of your body. And each day you get up, you notice "Hell, there is some aches and I need some time to regain mobility before starting into the day". The man made a wise decision. In his rank he was on top of the mountain. Nothing can take that time away, but, as he said - there is more to discover. Keep that memory my friend, and make joyous new ones!
a man with dreams and plans, respectfull, humble, caring for his fellow humans, and a true warrior in heart, what a man, i can only bow in respect and wish him alle the best luck in his path. thank you chris for this unique insight!
The very thought of ChiyoElvis out here healthy and living his best life makes me so very happy. All tbe best to him, and congratulations on a great interview.
The buildup to this video with all of the mystery and secret was well worth it. Great insight into the lives of rikishi, both during their career and after retirement.
Great interview. I appreciate Chiyotairyu’s frankness. No evasiveness or covering for the oyakata. He’s enjoying his new life and had the courage to bow out when opportunity was there. Leaving on his own terms, instead of being forced out by injury, like do many rikishi.
Its been said already a hundred times over, but this is really a great interview. Thank you for providing a candid look into the lives and minds of sumo wrestlers that no other source provides!
Bravo. I was not expecting this to be so funny! His assessment of Hakuho was one for the ages. His restaurant is on my list when I make it back to Japan. I’ll tell them you sent me!
This was a great video, really good to hear from Chiyotairyu and get such an insider's view of life in the upper echelons of sumo. He seems like a solid guy. If this is the direction the channel is going in, I'm looking forward to seeing what's next
This was a wonderful interview. I was very sad when Chiyotairyu retired. Many wrestlers spoke very highly of his strong tachiai and used Chiyotairyu as a test of their readiness.
Great interview Chris. Keep it up. Just one quibble...constructive criticism. Better lighting on your interviewee's face. Other than that. great questions, covered all the bases and even gave us insight into how much influence an attendant can have if the wrestlers is open to hearing it.
Very interesting to hear the thoughts of a near recent top level Rikishi. It seems like most of Sumo is from the Bill Belichick school of publicity control; simple pre-planned answers that all sound the same. It's a rare treat to get something more honest and relaxed like this. Thank you, and keep it up if you can.
This! I have no idea who Bill Belichick is, but I so love the rare instances when we get to hear anything beyond "I'll train even harder and focus on my style of sumo, please keep cheering for me"😅
I always enjoy your deep dives, Chris, even if YT doesn’t favor them as much. Thank you for your continued efforts in bringing high quality, English journalism to us.
epic a great window into life through a rikishi's eyes a delight to hear from, and get a feel for, chiyotairyu that he escaped worse injury, and found his new dream work (still early in life) is a great example, _follow your heart_ thank you, chris more of these (in due time), please
Great content ... How awesome to get Chiyo in front of YOUR cam (albeit a bit dark) ... I hope you can contact Yukatayama too ... Another surpise retirement! Thank you!!
Amazing interview! It's refreshing to hear a retirement story with a heartwarming ending after this past years. I hope God permits me to visit this restaurant and maybe say hello someday. Blessings to Chiyotairyu and congratulations on this incredible video, thank you for sharinng this stories with us foreigners
So nice to see a wrestler retire on his own terms and into something he loves. I would be really curious to know if he would ever consider wrestling outside Japan. People would probably pay decent money to train with him at least.
Chris, you're the best, Undisputed RUclips Yokozuna ! What an accomplishment for this channel ! Highly entertaining ITW ! Keep up the amazing work, we ain't going anywhere !
Hey Chris, thanks for the insightful video. As international fans, we rarely get to see such kind of coverage of sumo news. I was quite surprised when he quit because I remember he was doing OK. I enjoyed every bit of this video. Thanks a bunch
This is a fantastic interview Chris, it lovely to see a retired senior rikishi express his views and look forward to his ventures after retiring. All the best to the man with the best side burns in Sumo, Chiyotairyu.
This is a great interview from a wrestler I enjoyed watching. I'm glad that he is happy and it seems like things are pretty exciting for him right now as well. I hope that remains the case for many years to come.
Amazing interview, thank you Chris! What a pleasure to see these legends up close and personal. If I could offer one piece of uncalled for advice, it would be to get some warm frontal lighting for future interviews. But thanks again for this special peek into rikishis lives. 👍🏼
The reactions from my viewing stream regs when he suddenly retired in the middle of the basho was basically 'what scandal is he involved', who would've thought that others would follow his pattern this year (Okinoumi in January, Tochinoshin in May).
This video is incredible! Thank you Chris for all your hard work in making this happen and bringing it to us. I really feel a bigger sense of connection to the wrestlers and sumo community in Japan with videos like these. Can’t wait to try his restaurant out!
Congratulations on your retirement ceremony! You have a truly impressive sumo record and I am so happy that you are able to top it off with your restaurant! You are moving powerfully from an excellent sumo career (which many could only hope to have) to the fulfillment of yet another dream. All best wishes!
Chiyotairyu I look forward to visiting your restaurant next time I am in Japan. French food and grilled meat are my favourites. Wishing your business great success! Chris, another excellent video!
This was really interesting and fun, thank you! I really hope we get to see more such interviews. (But next time, please don't let the guy sit with his back to a window, the whole setup felt like you were talking to some anonymous whistleblower who only agreed to go public on condition of not revealing his face 😅) Happy travels Chyotairyu!
I really respect him going for what he wants to do with no regrets. An amazing interview, was surprised when he announced his retirement like alot of people, but the context his perspective gives makes it all clear now. He looks super relaxed and happy now, which is what's important. I wish him all the success 🎉🎉🎉🎉.
fantastic interview, thank you for this! chiyotairyu, i hope i can try your restaurant's food someday! i always enjoyed watching your matches. all the best with your new career!
i love your interviews and all the content you create... we appreciate it so much, Chris~ so interesting to see Chiyotairyu already tattooed with his hookah there... haha he put in the work and the years to this lovely sport-tradition.. he deserves it~!
To interview a recently retired sanyaku ranked wrestler is definitely a big milestone for this channel. Congratulations!!!
And he got a new tattoo. Something you can't do while still an active wrestler❤❤❤❤❤
His first commentator guesting got people talking due to his stud earring on one ear. 😅
I'm liking it!
@@lipstickzombie4981 The earring looks awesome too!
Interesting decision in Japan.

I'd love to visit his busines in Roppongi. Just got back from May basho.
Mr Chops is looking great these days! Definitely a lot happier.
Hakuho always stayed on balance which explains why he was able to be so consistent for such a long time.
FANTASTIC CHRIS! This is groundbreaking!
Chiyotairyu retired just when I was getting into sumo, so I never really knew him, but man! What a great video! It was really interesting to see his perspective.
He was a HOUND DOG

Thank you for giving Chiyotairyu the space to speak freely and tell his story. This video is worth every second. He is very well spoken!
Loving Chiyo's modesty and self-effacing from what I've seen so far. To shadow another comment; this really is pioneering stuff!
