Jimi Hendrix's career spanned only four years but he is considered one of the most influential electric guitarists in the history of popular music. Sadly he died at the age of only 27. He headlined the famous Woodstock Festival in 1969. He had a lot of great songs such as "Hey Joe", "Foxy Lady", "The Wind Cries Mary", "All Along The Watchtower" etc.

Jimi Hendrix, within 2 years, was the world's highest paid musician. He was more than highly and widely recognized. Most musicians, regardless of genre, were highly respectful of his singer/songwriter abilities. And then he was gone. The prototype shooting star. His studio work is, to this day, innovative.

Here is a great story that I heard many years ago of a deep connection with other artists at a young age before hitting it big.
Randy California was born as Randy Craig Wolfe into a musical Jewish[1] family in Los Angeles and spent his early years studying varied styles at the family's Los Angeles folk club, the Ash Grove, which was founded by his uncle, Ed Pearl.[2] He was 15 years old when his mother Bernice Pearl and new stepfather, Ed Cassidy (later to become a founding member of the band Spirit, with Randy), moved to New York City in the summer of 1966 because Cassidy had a number of jazz gigs lined up. It was there, at Manny's Music, that he met Jimi Hendrix.[3]
He played in Hendrix's band Jimmy James and the Blue Flames that summer. California, Cassidy and Pearl lived in an apartment building in Forest Hills, Queens called the Balfour, whose other residents included future Steely Dan co-founder Walter Becker, who cited California's blues-based guitar style as an influence on his own playing.[4]
There was a long running lawsuit with Jimi Page that Stairway to Heaven was a "rip-off" of a song he did from Spirit (and learned originally from Jimi). Led Zeppelin won the lawsuit eventually.
Randy died at 45 when he was trying to save his 12 year old son in a rip tide. Such a loss.

Purple Haze was based on a poem Jimi wrote from a dream he had. The original title of the poem was Purple Haze Jesus Saves. The lyrics were an edited version of the much longer poem. The basic song was recorded on 4-track with drums in mono on 1 track and a track each for bass, rhythm guitar and vocal. This was then bounced down to a 2 track stereo mix on another 4 track that opened up 2 more tracks for additional guitar and vocals. Each time you did this you picked up more tape noise so you were limited in how much you could get on tape before the quality was too rough. You had to be super creative and mix each bounce taking into account what the final mix would sound like. The basic tracks were done on 1/11/67 at De Lane Lea studios in London. Jimi came in, showed the chords to bassist Noel Redding and then hummed the song to him and drummer Mitch Mitchell to demonstrate how it went. They got the basic rhythm tracks down in 3 takes.
Then came the process of over dubbing. When Jimi would get an idea for a sound he wanted they would book an hour or two in the studio to try it out.
In February they took the 4 track tape to Olympic Studios where Jimi first met an engineer there named Eddie Kramer. Eddie was known for doing experimentation and what was considered odd ball recordings so he was assigned to work with Jimi. It was a partnership that would last until the day Jimi died. At the time the only "effect" Jimi was using was a Fuzz Face fuzz pedal. Then he met Roger Mayer backstage at a gig. Roger had been building effects pedals and approached Jimi as the best person to try them out. The first pedal was the Octavia that produces a note an octave higher along with a harmonic fuzz sound. That's what you're hearing on Purple Haze. What's amazing is how his recordings sound like they could have been done today even though the equipment they used would be considered primitive by today's standards. You are absolutely right about how different he sounded in 1967 compared to everything else at the time. Add in the way he dressed, his stage show, his unique style of singing and the complete mastery of the guitar he displayed that left the best players in the world in awe and a good deal of fear, because they felt so eclipsed by him. That changed though when they actually met him and found that offstage he was kind of shy, warm and humble and just as interested in what other musicians were doing as they were of him. He truly lived and breathed music, rarely seen without a guitar in hand, it was the language he used to relate to the world.

Jimi was fortunate to have a very open minded producer to work with. Eddie Kramer helped Jimi create soundscapes. He also had Roger Mayer a former royal navy electronics guy who designed some really cool guitar pedals. Plus his own huge talent. Effects are a crutch if you are a hack, a tool if you are a musical genius. Oh and the high sounds on the end is speeded up tapes, a technique pioneered by Les Paul. Listen to "by by blues or "how high the moon" by Les.

If you REALLY want to know what makes Hendrix great as a songwriter AND a guitarist, you’ve got to check out Little Wing. Studio version. I’m not sure how well you guys understand playing with a swing time compared to straight time, but Hendrix played BOTH ways in Little Wing. The guitar intro is one of the most iconic openings in the history of rock music, and the playing jumps between swing and straight time at a moments notice. It’s otherworldly. Add in the beautiful chord progressions and the elegant poetry….and you are left with genius. Pure genius.

He's always reminded me of the later work of John Coltrane, but with the Rock guitar instead of what Coltrane did with the Jazz saxaphone.

Spot on with Jimi's sound being heavier than anything else at the time. It was. By far. Cream were a heavy group as well, but it was Hendrix that laid down the blueprint for what would become heavy metal.
Check out "Bold As Love", "If 6 Was 9", and to get completely blown away, the live clip of him performing "Machine Gun" from the Fillmore East in 1970.

"Purple Haze" was an actual type of blotter acid.. LSD on paper. "Blue Star" replaced it a few years later. My first trip was courtesy of Blue Star in
    1978.😅 A teenager in the 70s! 😊

Humm not sure if you have listened to Black Sabbath with Ozzy they came out in 1968 and did a lot of the heavy guitar and such though Jimi was the GOD of Rock and still is. The original Purple Haze was LSD Jimi was know to partake of some of those items in his short life

Purple Haze was a popular "brand" of LSD common in the 60's and 70's. So this song is an acid trip.

Jimi is Jimi. The GOAT. But the Experience was the package that delivered the music of Jimi.
Mitch Mitchell on drums and Noel Redding on bass were phenoms in their own right!
Listen to Manic Depression for a taste of that!

We had never heard anything like this in 1967 either. Neither had the great musicians of the day. They knew they were up against a new sound and talent. My girlfriend painted me dayglo posters of Hendrix and I hung them up in my bedroom. I had black lights and a fire place in my bedroom. I was 17 at the time. Good sound system. Just didn't get any better!!!
