I use a spool of safety wire for many modeling projects. I’ve fashioned up chairs, bicycles, plenty of rope for a cowboys lasso, and several other things along with fences. The match sticks for fence posts looks great!

Very nice rural fence and gate project, Dave. Having the right vision and materials, you can use a basic set of household tools to fashion any project to completion. It's an experience in refinement of materials, technique and tools needed to have a satisfactory project experience. You've entered another phase of layout creation with adding new interest to the overall look of your layout, and I like it.

Hey Dave, glad to see you're tackling some DIY projects. The sooner you start and the more you do the better you'll hone your skills.
A pin vise will help to make small finite holes. Hobby Lobby sells them in the hobby isle near the models. While your there pick up some electrical hookup wire. It's great for wiring structures and accessories found with the scenery items. I find my pin vise useful for adding outside gooseneck led lights on my plastic buildings. I find it useful to use my xacto knife with the #11 blade to make pilot starter holes.
To make chain link fencing mesh.Tulle fabric, used for wedding veils, works well. Its sold in fabric stores like Joanne or possibly Hobby Lobby.
I find burnt umber makes for convincing looking aged rust. I do a second light random coat over the top with cinnamon stick or burnt sienna for fresh rust. If you apply the rust with a dry sponge method you wil achieve a more realistic mottled random rust look that doesn't look painted on with a brush. Dry sponging is similar to a dry brushing technique where most of the paint is blotted off before applying. I use cut up cubes of grout sponges used for tile. I use a lot of Americana DecoArt burnt umber and American DecoArt cinnamon stick craft paint for rust effects from Hobby Lobby. Something to keep in mind all weathering is best achieved in built up layers just as what occurs outdoors gradually overtime.
Hobby Lobby is a great source for all sorts of floral wire that I use to make wire form trees. I also use liquiedtex matte mediums and molding paste to cover the wire sprinkled with sawdust and painted with the brown craft paint. You can use scenic materials like static grass and flocking for the folige to make realistic trees. Hobby Lobby also sells reasonably priced model trees and scenic materials if you don't want to build from scratch.

Well, you've given me some ideas on building fences for my Lionel 027 layout which isn't built yet. Still some very good ideas I can carry over to HO scale as well. I do model HO & Lionel 027 which, I believe, is not true O scale but a little smaller. Since we have a fireplace, I save all the kitchen matches for use on my railroads. Cheers from eastern TN

Nice. A lot of O27 is closer to S or just drastically compressed. I feel like you can use anything with O27 and it would be fine.

Nice job on the fence Dave.
We have been using floral wire in all deferent sizes depending on what we are doing.
The wire also works good for chime supports and lots of other details.

Use twigs and get the look of real wood fence. But this is only bling for toy trains to simulate artificial realism adjacent to tracks. Model building and decorative structures for something to do and look at pleases some. I understand some like the modeling things in 1/48 scale to appear as real will enhance a layout & complements a train. Running and playing with Lionel trains is relaxing even without these additions.😊

Looks like a good fence to me. You could draw out a template on a block of wood the shape your wire if you wanted to make more than one.

Ok! Great project! Now go to a hobby shop and get a small piece of brass tubing and solder it the gate. Bend a small piece to fit in the tube and solder the bent piece . This probably doesn’t make a bit of sense the way I described it. to the gate.

Hey, you should pick up a pin vise and a set of micro size drill bits. I use mine all the time for stuff like this, I think you will too.

I have no idea but I’ll have to check. I think this particular gauge might be too thick. Hopefully I’ll remember to check
