This game was my absolute childhood. Only having played the second game, it was one of the most memorable games i have ever played. The music, the story, even the characters. Being completely fair, I never really read the story, since i was very young. But even then, i got it for the most part through context clues. Having replayed it recently, seeing every story beat I have missed was really magical. The soundtrack of this game series might be literally one of my favorites. Overall, I am amazed seeing you enjoyed this game as well, and i am happy for bringing this game to my attention again.
It's so awesome to see someone else who also grew up with the next chapter. Up there with my favorite DS games as a kid, I just had to look up what people on the internet had to say about a game I loved so much.
My favorite thing about the game was when you played it on the DS when you closed it they would cry because you left them all alone. And then when you opened it back up they cheered super happy
I loved that too, I would get sad when I had to leave my DS for whatever reason but them cheering made me happy again. I already loved art which is what drew me in to Drawn to Life in the first place, but beating the games made me love art even more and I still adore the characters and story. I didn't beat the first one for a long time though because the final boss just gave me so much trouble, I still hate that scorpion. I also really wish there was official merch, I would love a plushie of Mari or Jowee or even the Bakis!
"do you remember drawn to life" i read, and casually recall the hand drawn banan crops, the hand drawn billboard over the chef cookies resturant, the hidden beach mari and jowee found, the angler fish boss, the baki, the hand drawn hero and weapons i wielded, the music, the charming characters, the villians actions, heather and her half shadowed face, mike the only human in the raposa village, the wapo song. and many other things, "yea, i think i kinda remember it vaguely, only a little, totally not scared into my brain as a core pillar of my personality"
Also, Mike's character becomes EXTREMELY important in the sequel. If you ever get the time to play it, (I got both from GameStop years ago for like $7 at the bargain bin) I highly recommend it!
This is the game that I was hiding under my pillow in the fourth grade. It was my everything. This is the game I thought back to when I finished NieR: Automata and said "a game hasn't made me cry like this since [insert game]." I begged my parents for this game, mourned the cartridge when I lost it, and rejoiced when I discovered it wedged into the backseat of my mom's car. The only real opinions i heard about this game from other kids at this time was a touch of mockery from my classmates who were playing Halo and the like. It makes me so happy to know that i was not the only person so deeply affected by this, and thinking about it fills me with a kind of love and longing that the word "nostalgia" just doesn’t do justice by.
21:05 In the game files, there's actually an unused line that was supposed to be said by Wilfre after you defeated the final boss "[heroname] I never intended for this to happen... But it's too late... the shadow has consumed me..." This unused line implies that the darkness corrupted Wilfre, and that's what really drove him to kidnap the villagers and bring darkness to the village. Although not technically canon, this could serve as an explanation for some of his actions and honestly, I wish they could've kept this line in the game
Could explain the newest game regarding 2 certain characters in there assuming this was considered… heck could’ve led to a sequel hook regarding that line considering Heather. Sure the sequel does address that but not the darkness being a seperate entity part
The games were and still are one of my favorite series ever. Such a clever gimmick for the DS and a creative and pleasant story and artstyle, with a little bit of tragedy to tie it all together.
Deadwood was my favorite. If i remember correctly, the secret to beating the first phase was holding both the up and side buttons on the D pad to shoot diagonally.
Absolutely loved these games! I finished it it was a challenge back in the day would love for these games to be remastered on switch. Drawn to life two realms was made but it never seemed worth trying since it was quite different.
I've been playing this and I agree with pretty much everything you said. It's a nice game with a lot of frustrating elements in the platforming and boss levels. I made it to Wilfre and after dying to the scorpion who knows how many times, I finally got the hang of it. But then I died to Wilfre himself a few times. Having to replay the scorpion before fighting Wilfre every time made me incredibly frustrated and I gave up. I'm satisfied with how far I made it, and I saw the ending on RUclips so it's good enough for me 😂
The story takes such a turn in the sequel i heavily suggest you check it out (There's an alternative (censored??) ending, believe it or not, so make sure you get a version with the original....)
Omg, I have to say this is a 10/10 game. I've fully completed the first one and the me chapter and I'm still amazed on how this game isn't more popular.
I remember the last time I played the 2nd game a little more than 10 years ago when I was still a teenager and I drew my character to look like Ichigo Kurosaki from Bleach, it took me about 30 minutes to make it and I was so proud of it that I never changed it throughout the entire playthrough. Oh and to anyone that’s wondering did I draw my character’s sword to look like Tensa Zangetsu? You’re goddamn right I did!
21:05 I think if Wilfre is anything like who he's based on, he did all that to spite the creator, probably he probably was on the chopping block because of what he did and tried to take as many Raposa down with him as he could before then... 21:15 Yep, hit the nail on the head.
I’m so glad I read the comment section of a song from Super Paper Mario that someone uploaded, because someone mentioned that both SPM and Drawn to Life made that person cry, and I was very curious and *drawn* to learn more about it. I appreciate having learned a lot about it here, and its story already means a lot to me because of ways I relate to Mari in an allegorical sense and because I quickly noticed and can appreciate its Christian themes as a follower of Christ. Thank you for your video, and I may try to find where I can buy the game.
Love hearing others talk about this game. I absolutely feel in love with it as a kid and the ending (for both games, and I do still have my original copy of the sequel) still make me cry. Though, at least some of that is nostalgia. I agree with your sentiment of getting lost on the first level. Some of those show levels were a little non-linear for the game's small FoV and I definitely got lost a few times. Even when I was young I was able to pick up on the Christian symbolism but (thankfully) kinda put that to the side.
I’m normally afraid of watching videos about things a like from creators I’m unfamiliar with. The reason being so many people that make video essays have terrible audio. -bad Mic -incomprehensible accent -terrible/muted stage presence -badly timed and delivered jokes I’m happy to say you don’t fall under these categories. That being said, I DO think your stage presence could use a bit of polish. It’s passable, downright charming at times, but could have a bit more color. I don’t know if that makes, but overall, you did a great job. I’m delighted to have come across this video.
Loved your video! As someone who also grew up with this series(I ended up playing the second game first on accident, lol) I love seeing mentions and art about the games and I can’t wait to see your vid on The Next Chapter! Also, that Wilfre in the thumbnail and end of the video is sick af, and I also got stuck in the game, haha(Deadwood and Angler king if you’re curious-)
@@EchonoxYT I know this is a late comment, but love the vid and im glad there is another out there that got the drawn to life games as well when they were also a kid and glad we can all enjoy some nostalgia together
I booted up this game on my ds to look through my childhood save and re-live some nostalgia. And I noticed that the sign I'd drawn for the restaurant said "Eat here or DIE! :)" Never felt more proud of child me 🤣
Holy shit you just hit a Core Memory! The first is amazing, the sequel made it better, the new one that recently came out, uhh haven't played it much... The Wii version? What Wii version? There was never a Wii version what am I talking about
Great video man! Loved how you paced the video, sectioning things off to focus on little side notes like the OST, your fondness with certain characters, and just everything in general! Definitely looking forward to more content from you, your stuff is great!
i just want to say one thing. well two, i suppose. three, actually, but i didn't want to like. ramble on about why jowee should be pronounced joey because then i'd get into all of the symbolism in the game. and i don't even pronounce mari like mary so i'm going against myself with the point i'd be making. ANYWAY if you ever want to replay this game (not the second one it doesn't have cheats) and not worry about getting hit: when you enter a level (you have to do this each time you enter one btw), press start, hold L , then input a x b b y. It doesn't work with bottomless pits though. obviously. i learned that the hard way. also raposa are lil fox guys :) i think you call them bunny guys in your second video but raposa actually comes from the spanish/portuguese word for fox! they don't have tails though. probably to make them either a lil unique or to save on sprite work.
Oh shit they put me in drawn to life, epic Also god bless this was absolutely my childhood hyperfixation it may be kinda basic in most aspects but something about it is just so 🤌muah
I loved this game growing up!! You’re so right about the characters and the music being the best part of the game. The boss battles were always so hard so I’m somewhat relieved to hear someone else say they are also tediously hard (and that I’m not just bad at games). Not gonna lie though, I hated the sequel.
Yeah, I also have fond nostalgia of the first Drawn to Life game on DS, while the game had its shortcomings, it wasn't a bad attempt to create something new, and one of the things that I would have wanted to see in this game, was some form of multiplayer in it, as it would have been cool to see other player's drawings, and heck who knows maybe some art trading would have been a cool idea or something, or if they wanted to be lazy they could have just done something similar to the secret bases in the Pokemon games from gen 3, as whenever I saw the secret bases that my friends had when I was exploring Hoenn, it always motivated me to see more from the game world. When I beat Drawn to Life as a kid, I wanted more from it as I thought it was a unique experience, but after getting Next Chapter on the DS, I kinda liked the new game mechanics and stuff, but I didn't enjoy the twist in the story, and that game could have been great if they just didn't make it so real with that twist, as some people like myself tend to play games and stuff, to get a break from reality and experience things we normally can't, which is why the more immersive the game experiences the better, but as I grew older I learned to appreciate things more, including the Drawn to life story.
@Beezu_. meh. I already know the full story due to Google and videos cuz I couldn't be bothered to finish and I have fallen in LOVE with the story and how much depth they put into the characters I honestly can't think of a game that can top that
My daughter pulled her DS and Drawn to Life out of a long-forgotten box and we tried to play it. But we got stuck - are we doing something wrong, or do you really have to start right from the beginning again when you lose 3 lives??
If I recall correctly, I don't think you have to start from the very beginning of the game, just from the beginning of the last level you have unlocked
Drawn to Life The Next Chapter, IMO makes the religious themes pop out to me more. Its less about overt motiefs and more about the application of religion. I think these games are important and works of art.
