Dad was an Oldsmobile man, but with 4 kids, his State of Florida paycheck as a food inspector wouldn't allow him to get the 98. He settled for the 88 with the 350. I used to sit in the driveway and jabber on the CB radio in the evenings after my homework was done. Fond memories. Dad's 91 now and Mom is 86! I'm so blessed and I know it!

It never ceases to amaze me in these older cars the amount of space between the engine and the body of the car. You could practically slide down into the engine bay to do any repair work. Lol.

I remember these cars as I worked at a Buick/Oldsmobile dealership in this era. I had the lowly job of changing oil which was done fairly frequently in those days. I remember one 1975 Delta 88 Royale that had a Pontiac 400 cubic inch engine in it. I was told that Oldsmobile ran out of 350 cubic inch engines at the end of the model run, so the Pontiac 400 was substituted. I have never seen another one so equipped.

I worked at a Chevy /Olds dealer from '73 to '78 and always thought the Olds was just a cut above the Chevy. You could tell the Olds from the Chevy just by the engine (exhaust) sound without even seeing the cars. Yes the car has some faults but thanks for bringing back some fond memories.

My brother worked for Chevy and Buick dealerships as a mechanic at the same time you wrote of; and he noted the better fit-and-finish of the Buicks over that of the Chevys; even with the Chevy Impala models.

Mine was a ‘69 green four door in the homely “pea green” that was so popular in that era! But the 455 Rocket under the hood was no joke, as the transmission in that car soon found out…..😂

@@ddellwo Mine was a blue coupe with a white top, 350 under the hood. And I later got a 1970 pea green 4 door in 1984. It's amazing all the cars I just let slip through my hands.

You can't compare a pre-1972 car with a post, bogged down by the insurance companies and the government, 1972 Olds. A 455 went from almost 400 HP to 190 and it has a single exhaust which doesn't let it breathe and smog devices and a retarded emissions system and ignition.

  • @Flies2FLL
    @Flies2FLL 2 года назад

That's a cool old car, but 190 hp in a 4500 pound car means it is a slug.
This is nothing against you Adam, but in 1994, my parents owned a condo on the beach in Fort Pierce, Florida and this old guy had a red convertible '75 Delta 88 that he was utterly proud of. I drove a '92 Corrado SLC with the 190 hp VR6 engine at the time, and while washing cars one day I talked to this guy, John Cook, who used to be a GM engineer about his amazing car. We "spoke car" for a while and then went our ways. I told him his car was "UTTERLY cool", my exact words, and he shook my hand and smiled. I think I made his day.
A year later I was removing some stuff from the place and taking it up to my home in Orlando. His car was right by the storage room door, so knowing him I just parked behind him since I was right there and he knew me. Well, I looked up a few minutes later and he was staring down at me, and then he came down and got in my face! I kept reminding him of our talk, but he got belligerent and red faced and threatened to hit me! This was before cellphones or I would have left my Corrado EXACTLY where it was and called the police, but instead I just left.
I heard the man died about two years later; I suspect he lost his mind.
Sorry to bring such bad stuff to your channel, but your videos are great! And I'm still trying to figure out if you are in Woodhaven or Trenton....

I have its cousin. The 1975 Buick LeSabre custom landau coupe with the 455. It had the option in 74 dual exhaust fitted so it makes 230 hp. I so love the lines of these generation Buick Olds & Pontiac. Like the front of this olds maybe a bit better than the front of my 75 lesabre but the rear end.... those square lights on the olds look so ‘cheap’ working class. The buick has thise wide taillight lenses. You gotta have those ;)

Thanks for the show & ride. Fascinating how they loaded it up but skipped AC. I noticed you have “sport mirrors” which go well with the slick top, 455 and sport suspension vibe. I rarely saw them on 1975 full-size GM cars. The chrome “Buick & Olds” chrome mirrors were more common - unless it was just one plain non-remote control mirror - a sure sign of a strippie.

Nice car sir. Such low kms. I currently own a 75 Delta Royale coupe Cameo white 455. 36000 miles. I'm glad you injoy all the cars the big 3 had to offer in these years. Just before this Olds I recently owned a 71 New Yorker coupe. Gun metallic Grey with the console floor shifter. I have yet to see another 71 New Yorker with the console. Also a 69 Monaco coupe, a 76 Impala coupe a 72 Monte and a 73 Road Runner with the Pistol Grip 78 t bird and several 76-78 Cordobas. Nothing drives like the full sized GM or Chryslers and Fords of this generation. This current Olds 88 is the best driving of them all i must say. You are very knowledgeable on your American classics sir..keep up the great videos 👏

Beautiful car Adam! I love watching the vintage auto video advertisements, and seeing the cars in action when they were brand new, love some of the old jingles also that the car makers had out at the time, a couple of the Olds ads that come to mind are, something about the feeling of having an Olds around you, and also the one that said "there's a special feel in an Oldsmobile" and having ridden in a few back then, it really was true.

Oh, Man! Memories! I had a ‘76 4 door HT with the same interior. Mine had a 350, A/C, power windows and locks and many other options.
It was an even better example of that lousy mid 70s workmanship. There was a 5/8” gap between the doors at the bottom and they crossed each other at the top.
I built a ‘72 455 for it and of course the performance was much more respectable. Surprisingly, the gas mileage didn’t change hardly at all. Had tons of fun in, around and under that thing.

Beautiful example there sir. Have had many iterations of the Delta 88 - favorites being the '65 and '77 that I owned. Even had an '87 H-body Delta that was superb in its own ways, but that one wasn't in the same class as the framed cars. Miss all of 'em. The GM boats during this era were kinda junky, but had good bones, and that's all I ever cared about.

Enjoyed it while I had it. As far as the a/c goes, I cannot remember owing a car (except a VW when I was 16) without it; even growing up, the family car always had a/c. I once lived in Anchorage and bought a new Cutlass with a/c though it may have been an exception there rather than a rule...at the time. Glad the car had a/c when I was transferred to San Francisco.

I've owned a few GM B-body cars from this era. First one was a 1972 Impala Custom coupe, also I had a 1975 Caprice Classic 4-door HT. Then, I had this 1976 Delta 88 Royale, also a 4-door HT that I bought from a co-worker for the significant sum of $190. That car was HUGE, still the largest car I've ever owned. Looking at that dash on here brings back a lot of memories. From the rear, the car looked the same as this one. It had the 'new for '76' rectangular headlights on it, and the grille was more square shaped.

My mom had a 1975 Custom Cruiser with a 455. It was gut less, and we had to run Amoco Ultimate Premium to get 12 mpg. All other gas was less than 8 mpg. I took over my grandfather's 1973 88 Royale 455 when he stopped driving. He overheated it when it was New and they plained the heads, making it high compression. That had unbelievable power. Great car, wish I never got rid of it for a lousy 82 Dodge Charger 2.2. Giant, regrettable mistake.

Regarding the seat comfort: I'd guess the '75-'76 Grand Marquis leather/velour seats would compare quite favorably. Glad to see an update on the first car that got me hooked on this channel -and that was purchased in my home state of Wisc! -Very cool car, and like most 70s pre-galvanized steel cars -but these Oldsmobile's in particular rusted really bad -there are just gone now. Rare to see one like in this condition.

Thank you for sharing your Oldsmobile Eighty Eight. It is quite nice. Oldsmobile always did a great job with their models and with the technology and more. I like that cloth interior too.

My grandpa had one of those in brown. He had to build an extension onto his garage so it would fit inside!

I had a Delta 88 Royale . Mine was brown and was considerably rougher than this gem you have ! I had new duel exhaust installed right after I bought it. On the way home, I smelled burning carpet. The rear floorboard was rusted through, and the carpet was hanging right on the new exhaust ! Fun car even with only 190 horse from the 455.

Big block engine, and you can still see the ground underneath, all around ! Ahhh, the good old days :)

The loudest blinker relay on the market. No worries about leaving that on too long

Adam I LOVE your eclectic collection of Classics. Do you ever sell any of your cars? That 70 Caprice and this 75 Olds are right up my alley :)

Adam, As much as I like this Olds, I think we could agree that GM was running on 'residual quality' in the 71-76 generation. 😁
