    Now that I think about it, the same thing kind of happened to Bass in the Battle Network games. After the first 3 he just vanished from the plot and was only a bonus boss. Vile also got downplayed a lot in the X series since he only got to be in 3 of the games. Then in the Zero games Phantom never got to really come back (plotwise at least), and all the Guardians were just gone in the 4th game. Capcom seems to have a thing about dropping rival characters into the abyss.

    What I think is most interesting about Bass is his sort of superiority complex. A lot of what he does is to test or prove how powerful he is. When he’s defeated by say Mega Man, he can’t understand why. I don’t think he’s deluding himself that he’s superior, rather he’s a robot who came into this world automatically thinking he’s the most powerful.

    My hypothesis is that one of the last things Bass did was to "corrupt" Zero by persuading him that Wily was a terrible father and cause Zero to disobey Wily as well, causing the old Doctor to seal him away with the Zero Virus to reprogram him to follow Wily's will.

  • @VestedUTuber

    Ok, so... two things about Bass and Mega Man 11:
    1. The reason Bass wasn't included is even dumber than the reason you gave. The devs literally said that "Bass's inclusion would be confusing to new players". I mean, seriously? You could literally just look up who he is if you didn't know about him. Anyway, it's the same reason why Protoman didn't get in either.
    2. That being said, you know how the dual-gear system tends to overheat? Now, with that in mind, consider how stubborn Bass is and how he basically doesn't know when to quit. Yeah...

      In Hitoshi Ariga's Megaman manga, Bass almost dies 4 seperate times for the exact reason you mentioned.
      He's torn to near shreds after his battle with Megaman and its basically all but stated that if Megaman wasnt the softie he was Bass would have been turned inside-out and sold for scrap.
      Then he brashly leaves Wily's upgrade capsule on a hunch that Megaman is a afoot, leading to him fighting Copy Megaman on a half-baked power-up who nearly kills him when he self-destructs to take Bass out.
      Then when Duo arrives on Earth as the White Giant, Bass is smart enough to know that the being is too powerful to take lightly but too stubborn to take defensive measures and is nearly slaughtered by the thing.
      Then, in the last arc of the manga, Bass takes the dangerous power crystals that Wily excavated from the Moon in Megaman 3 and, while he's powerful enough to harness their power, they override much of his mental faculties and he puts an initially miserable fight versus the Stardroids. *Then* when he takes on Saturn, in a bit of frustration, Bass forces the crystals to self-destruct in front of Saturn's face, killing the Stardroid but the injury Bass causes himself nearly leaves him dead in space.
      Bass is a frustrating character for all the right reasons. It's shockingly well written how the one thing that makes such an amazing fighter is also the thing that holds him back as Megaman's rival.

    I actually really like MM11, but considering Bass is my favorite MMClassic character I consider it a massive missed potential that he's not in MM11 at all, especially since he was just playable in the last game chronologically. It seems like Wily and Bass aren't on good terms right now, so why not do a storyline where Bass is competing with Mega Man to be the first to defeat the 8 Robot Masters and give the old man a classic whooping? I can even imagine him delivering a whole speech to Wily about how he's better than any robot Wily could ever steal, even if they are upgraded with gear enhancements.
    When you think about it, Bass is basically the same thing to the Mega Man series as Metal Sonic and Shadow combined are to the Sonic series.

      I wonder how Bass would interact with Zero if he's first awaken as a blood thirsty manaic prior to his fight with Sigma. He would definitely get recked by him, despite boasting about how superior he is, when that complex got immediately shattered by an incomplete Zero.

    • @Crow_Rising
      @Crow_Rising Год назад +3

      @@bionic-tale4313 I don't think it's possible for his power complex to get shattered, given that it's a result of his programming. The likes of Mega Man, Roll, Bass, Gutsman, etc. only think and act the way they do because they were programmed to, and changes to this have to be done manually such as in the first game when Dr. Wily reprogrammed Dr. Light's Robot Masters to serve him instead.
      However, if Zero technically counts as something other than a Robot Master and something more parallel to a Reploid (but not quite the same thing) then it could be possible for Bass's programming to be satisfied that although Zero is stronger than him he is still the strongest Robot Master, which is the specific thing he's programmed to keep true. In such an event I imagine that he would simply view Zero as a monster to stay away from or else deal with the consequences, and might even resent Wily a bit for creating such an abomination (in his view).

    • @bionic-tale4313
      @bionic-tale4313 Год назад +3

      @@Crow_Rising Yeah, I agreed that due to the nature of Robot Masters' programmed to do. Since their programming inhibits them from doing something that they were not programmed to do, unless they are reprogram to do otherwise as since with Wily's schremed involving them. Bass viewing Zero as a monster would definitely be very accurate & would resent Wily for creating much a beast. If they do fight, it would be a losing battle for Bass & Treble even with Treble boost. However doesn't Zero count as a robot mater? He's designation offically is D.W.N infinity. Meaning that he's a Wily robot master by nature(with the infinity meaning beyond anything else he created before including Bass).

    • @Crow_Rising
      @Crow_Rising Год назад +2

      @@bionic-tale4313 It's kind of a weird thing. His body is more advanced than that of other Robot Masters and his programming is more similar to X's in that he has true free will and can adapt and change his mind. This was Wily's purpose in creating the Zero Virus; it's a sort of failsafe to ensure that although Zero has free will, he will still be kept largely to his default "normal" intended state, which is destructive and violent.
      When the virus transferred from Zero into Sigma, Zero's personality was finally free to do as it pleased and he mellowed out into a comparatively chill guy who cares for others, indistinguishable from other Reploids. In this regard, it could be said that Light and Wily both invented the technology that would later become Reploids, but it was X's design that got used as the basis and not Zero's despite the Zero project being older since Zero was not discovered until after X.
      I guess the best way of looking at it is that X and Zero in their original bodies are something inbetween Robot Masters and Reploids, though they do eventually go on to transfer into up to date (at the time) Reploid bodies.

      I like to think that Rock was upgraded into X and Bass was upgraded into Zero. Even if they don't retain the continuity of their prior identities, the idea that the soul of their programming, the kernel of what made them who they were, still remains in some capacity. The idea that Bass in a sense _did_ end up surpassing Mega Man as Zero and mellowed the fuck out as a result, eventually leading to his continued character development and death in MMZ4, just feels like it works to me.

    • @bionic-tale4313
      @bionic-tale4313 Год назад +6

      @@KageryushinIsn't it confirmed that X & Zero are completely different robots. They were highly more advanced than their own robot master brethren and are the last creations of Dr. Light & Wily. Where they actually give way to a next generation of robots called Reploids that can actually think for themselves. Though most were built from X's systems, due to being discovered first.

    • @Kageryushin
      @Kageryushin Год назад +1

      @@bionic-tale4313 It's not 100% confirmed. Indeed, what precisely occurred between 20XX and 21XX is ultimately quite unclear. There's not a lot of evidence to support the idea that X and Zero were upgraded from prior models, but neither is there much to prove that they are different robots entirely. In both cases, said evidence is often circumstantial and/or dubiously canon, and honestly, it's questionable if most developers who worked on the X games had a specific notion in mind.
      So my post above is purely and entirely just what I like to think.

    • @bionic-tale4313
      @bionic-tale4313 Год назад +3

      @@Kageryushin Okay, what? How is it not confirmed? You're basically pulling out headcanons & fan theories that were debunked by Capcom themselves within interviews. It sounds like you never paid attention to them or to videos that disscuss the interview. X & Zero are completely different characters, they're not Megaman or Bass. Since X is more of a successor as well as being built by Dr. Light as the first robot that wasn't bound by the laws of robotics, not to mention that he acts much more thoughtful than the original blue bomber. Though very powerful & having a more advanced AI, he was put into the capsule to test his morality by Dr. Light for 30 years(which he doesn't live to see), if he was Rock, who is bound by the laws of robotics, would ever need to go into a capsule for Morality testing when he's programmed to follow them(no the American translation doesn't count, it's a mistranslation). Also why would Bass be Zero? They look completely different by design(with Zero taking cues from Protoman's design than Bass). Plus even if Wily wanted to turn Bass into Zero, the former wouldn't want that due to looking girly. Another thing to note that they have different designations(for Bass is S.W.N 001, while with Zero is D.W.N infinity), as well as the fact that Wily refers to Zero withon Bass' ending in Megaman the power fighters 2 ending as a separate. The reason he was sealed by Wily because he was too violent, disobedient & uncontrollable, even more so than his older brother. The maverick virus is made to not only infect other robots but to also to correct Zero's cognitive flaw, which was interrupted by Sigma in their first encounter. Yes, there is gaps between what happen in 20XX & 21XX but what you said isn't even accurate or even true. Especially when those theories you have, much of them have already been debunked.

      I'm guessing for MM9/MM10 they didn't bring in the adapters since they nerfed all of Mega Man's other abilities, but yeah, you'd think they'd want to bring it back for him in the sequels. I suppose that's kind of the whole point of the "main gimmick" of each game, where they only planned to do the Super Adapter for MM7, designing challenges around that, and then the Mega Ball became the focus for MM8. Like you mention though, it's odd how Bass always gets his Super Adapter no matter where he shows up lol

      @@JarateChop Then MM6 introduces those adaptors, making the game built around them.
      Don't know why Mega Man 8 still had that goofy rush items, but that game made the most worthless rush utility's.
      Probably it's because only Mega Man 6 and 7 really cared about the adaptors being a new gimmick, while other games wanted it's specific gimmick to be in the limelight.
      Mega Man 8 and Mega Man and Bass focused on the upgrade shops.
      Mega Man 9's gimmick was going back to the classics (Mega Man 2 but with a shop and cutscenes and a bit more plot).
      Mega Man 10 was doubling down on that, but with more characters.
      Mega Man 11 was for the double gear, which is somewhat similar to the adaptors that are shown.
      Jet Adaptor/Speed Gear
      Power Adaptor/Power Gear
      Super Adaptor/Double Gear
      With the naming conventions of each Adaptor, would that one Hyper move from MvC 1 and 2 of Hyper Mega Man and Hyper Roll be the Hyper Adaptor?
      But, the adaptors (mainly the Super one) are stuck in comics or manga, even with a super, super adaptor because of the chaos emeralds.

    Good video on Bass, but in Light's defense he never wanted his creations to go into battle, so much so that Rock himself volunteered to be a fighting machine. Now it's disappointing megaman 11's lack of content in terms of characters and gameplay options, for me it was just a generic game with advanced graphics. Sorry my english, im using a translator

  • @MJTRadio
    @MJTRadio 2 года назад +8

    Due to a combination of old playground rumors and a mistake in translation, I thought Bass had a very specific continued presence in the series. Hear me out-
    Without a good picture of the Mega Man timeline years ago, before 9 was released, I always assumed Mega Man and Bass was the end of the original timeline's events. So since that put Power Battles 2 before Mega Man and Bass, I assumed Wily was already working on Zero on the side when Mega Man and Bass took place.
    Now in the English version of Mega Man and Bass, Wily reveals he's working on an upgrade of King, and tells Bass, "Join with King the Second and together you two will be invincible!" I didn't interpret that as, "Work alongside him," I took it as, "Merge your programming with his."
    If you take all of those events in that order, it means Wily was already working on what he considered the ultimate robot and promised Bass that combining with his new model would make him unstoppable. Granted, Proto Man then destroys Wily's remaining research, but it always felt to me like something Wily could do again.
    You put all those pieces together and you get the picture that Zero was built from the resultant fusion of Bass and King the Second!
    Those pieces don't really fit together anymore, sadly, but it was a cool thing while it lasted.

    I fully agree with what you say about 11, including Bounce Man's stage being a nightmare. As for why Bass was gone for so long, the classic games have basically disappeared after the two &B games, the fighters and Battle&Chase, all of which had Bass in some way and even had him play an interesting role sometimes, so the problem is more-so on the only classic games released after that being focused on going back to the roots each time except 10.

    (I know the comic is made by Megamix's artist and therefore fits more into that canon than anything but the comic doesn't hinder or create much inconsistencies that it can't be used as backstory for Bass in 10, aside from him winning of course in the comic LMAO I mostly like the scene with Treble))

    They had a great character arc going with Rockman and Forte setting up an interesting dilemma for Bass...and then Capcom abandoned the series and only the idea of a Mega Man 2 nostalgia pandering game got them to greenlight a new game. And of course, Mega Man 2 nostalgia pandering means no Bass.
    Then he's relegated to being the DLC character in 10, when I think Bass should've been part of the main plot, knowing about Wily's shenanigans and being on board until Treble gets Roboenza, at which point Bass hunts Wily down to get a cure. But then who would be our oh-so-important DLC character. And now by the time of 11, what can you do with him? The setup for his arc was last seen 22 years ago on a shitty Game Boy Advance port. No exec is going to approve picking up Bass' story after 22 years.

    I rarely play these games(because I suck, lol), but I looked into the stories of a lot of them from Classic to Zero 1 and I feel like a big issue is that there is no sense of finality to anything, because the "successors" don't succeed anything, with them just being able to backtrack at will and insert new games whenever Capcom wants to sell more stuff.(And even tho I barely interacted with Zero 2 and onwards, I could filter from internet discussions that this problem persists)
    Making stuff up to infinity and beyond just isn't really great. Having a limited amount of space to work with(and not rewriting the plot. Zero 1...) is just a lot better for constructing a good narrative arc. The topic of the video is actually a pretty good example of how things can go wrong. You establish something and run with it for a few games and then...you just don't put a nail in it and leave the plotline on the backburner forever once you run out of steam.
    "Rockman and Forte: Challenger from the Bootleg Gameboy" is basically the end of Bass' arc where he is faced with the issue of of how Robots of his generation are still inheritly tied to their programming and following his current road is incredibly likely to ruin him once he lost his purpose. And...yo, that's just depressing from both the in-universe perspective and the out of universe-perspective that that's just sorta the end of this guy. I guess the only positive we can get from all of this is that he's sort of a lore-reference thingy, because he already basically works akin to a prototype-version of an MMX-robot in the Snes-game.
    4:38 Lmao.
    8:14 Yeah, this is kinda stupid. It was done for the equivalent change of Rockman to Megaman, but it really doesn't make any sense. These two names aren't tied to each other, so they could have easily kept the actual charactername unchanged to keep this connection that has nothing wrong with it.(For the record, I personally understand why they changed Rockman to Megaman and Blues to Protoman and agree with those changes despite them interrupting the musical theme at play, but that's another topic entirely)
    9:25 I still support the theory that Wily based Zero on her. And that theory is hilarious in a way because it's like...Roll is straight up the origin point of the X-saga and beyond at that point, as Light also canonically developed X based on behavior of free will found in her. In an ironic twist, she's possibly one of the most lore relevant characters in the mainline franchise, even tho she rarely does anything besides cleaning or support.

    • @JarateChop

      I completely agree with everything you've said here. Thankfully, the Zero series DID see its conclusion, while still leaving some things open for interpretation or side stories if Crapcom was really interested in reviving the name. It just sucks that it's like the only one (although I do believe Battle Network and Star Force received their 'conclusions,' haven't played them myself to verify however).
      But yeah, There's definitely a point in Crapcom wanting to leave things ambiguous so they can sell sequels later to get more sales, but it's sad when series like MMZX will likely NEVER see a true sequel. I wish they'd just contract Inti Creates to make a simple light novel, manga, or drama CD (since Inti has a strange affection with those) to just wrap things up. The writing's on the wall for ZX, there's really no reason to keep fans in the dark about it lmao.
      And with the way they sort of "played it safe" with MM9, 10, and 11's plots (which I don't inherently dislike), it makes you wonder if we'll ever see a proper sequel to MMX8, for example... Idk though, I'm going to finish typing this since I'm sure I'm just preaching to the choir with this hahaha. I really don't have a point that I'm getting at with this.

    My theory on why Proto Man and Bass didn’t show up in 11 is because Capcom didn’t have much confidence that it would sell well. They wanted to make it as accessible as possible to ensure they wouldn’t just be attracting existing fans and so they went with a super straightforward plot with no extraneous characters. It’s not a good excuse for not having any other playable characters, especially with Roll, but I think that since 11 proved Megaman can still sell well we might see them get a bit more experimental with 12 whenever that happens. Hopefully that would mean the return of Protoman and Bass but I’d settle for having more meaningful content of any kind considering the price.

    The worst part is anyone can easily see the way to incorporate Bass into 11:
    Have him show up for a fight with the double-gear after beating 4 robot masters. Have him lose. Then have him be the boss fight in the penultimate stage where he does the Treble Boost and activates the Double Gear. He then starts overloading. You can win in two ways: if you just survive long enough his systems burn out and break and he's destroyed, maybe left there broken as Mega Man asks "Why did you do it??" and you continue on, or you beat him by depleting his health bar in time and incapacitate him before he burns himself out and then once you beat the game he becomes a playable character.

    This kind of thing unfortunately happens most of the time for everyone except the Light family and Dr. Wily.
    Dr. Cossack is introduced in mega man 4. He's mentioned once in mega man 5's manual, and his company designed Tundra man from mega man 11. That's it.
    Dark Man is the secondary antagonist of Mega man 5. He isn't even referenced in other games*.
    Mr. X was even smarter than Wily, but for some reason he just fell off the face of the earth after Mega man 6. Why the hell wasn't HE the main villain?
    Duo was introduced in Mega man 8, he's never mentioned again*.
    And it's even worse in the X series games.
    Dr. Doppler, Bit and Byte, the X hunters, Colonel, Iris, General, Double, High Max, Dynamo (X6 doesn't count), Isoc, Gate, and Red are ALL killed off in the exact same game the're introduced in, to never be mentioned again, or at best, have small cameos in other games**.
    I get it, you don't want games to feel homogenous (although they all are, for varying reasons), but Mega man just eats through tons of side characters and throws them away before anyone even cares. We have two crazy wildcard rival-types, three stone cold killing machines working for the villain, frickin FOUR scientists, and *FIVE* characters who weren't even mavericks, but still got tragically killed for one reason or another. It's okay to have reoccurring characters.
    * In the main series
    ** Colonel and Iris do have an important impact on Zero, but every mention of them is as brief as their life was.

    Bruh... You calling that incest?.. Then what about Ice Man in the Archie comic?.. they're all brothers in the sense that Dr. Light made them all, but they're not from like.. the same exact metal or what ever, there's nothing incestuous about that... I know it's a joke and all.. but it just doesn't make sense is what I'm saying.. What the hell am I even talking about? O-o They can't breed! Or mate...... I think.. not sure on that one.. xD......
