  • On this trip I am deep in the forest and I am building an earth lodge cabin. I have dug a stove inside the cabin and made a chimney out of clay and stones! Suddenly there was a snow storm and the temperature dropped quite a bit, but I continued to build my cabin!
it was a really nice experience to spend the whole day in the snow!
I hope you will enjoy the video!
    Have fun by watching!

I am 83 and have built temporary lodging in the woods. Nothing as elaborate as this. I am in awe and wish I were 60 so I could go and try this. Creaky bones forbid this kind of work. At the end of the world as we know it I want someone like this guy to help me survive a bit longer.

Know how you feel I am 73 and trying to repair my cottage is painfull, was brought up in the rural area everything was done by hand living there now for15 years, love the quiet ,but doing repair ...like digging water channels ,gardening, roof repair, and cuting wood and such like now my age is nearly imposable. This reminds me of repairing the fence after a mini tornado blew it and the tree down a month ago. Can not even lift the post now ,my strength is gone amd my bones ach.SEEING him do this I AM JEALOUS, I HATE GETING OLDER.

When I was in high school, our army cadet unit would go on map reading exercises with the militia unit we were attached to. One kid was left a way point and give each section that passed through their next point reference, then join in with the last unit. Well, the exercise was going long so it was called, but the last unit hadn't picked the kid up yet. The section that was supposed to pick him up, didn't know that, so they didn't report him missing. It was just before lights out back at base when his bunk mates reported him missing. They searched immediately in the bush at his last map reference and there he was. He's stayed put, built a lean-to, with a pine bow bed, a wind break, and a fire with a supply of fire wood, and was eating a BBQ'd rabbit. Turns out he was an Eagle Scout and loved winter camping... ooh did I mention this was in February ... in Canada.

Same thing happened when I was in the Corps. Except when we went looking for the guy, he took off walking into the wilderness instead of the base. We found him dead three days later in a drainage pipe he tried used for shelter. This was in the Mojave desert with 113 degree heat. Shit hit the fan....

I am a 78 old woman. I built my self an outdoor "kitchen " in my back yard a couple of years ago. Don't know how I did it. My back is paying for it today. If you can start this kind of work, keep it up. Once you stop, the next year you have lost strength and can't match last year's ability.
I finally got the strength to carry out my Dutch oven and baked brownies again. My next interest is to see if I can bake a decent bread. The more I attempt the easier it's getting. Strength coming back slowly after taking a year's hiatus. Worse decision made. Keep up your strength or you'll lose it. 😫

Patricia you are so right. I wrote my comment early this year. Closing in on my 84th birthday and I have to admit that I am further down the road as far as the ability to do hard work. Cut down a 60 foot tree 2 weeks ago. Limbed it, cut the big pieces up for firewood and burned the rest of the mess. Took 4 days to get my back and shoulders to move in the direction I wanted to go. One step in front of the other is my motto, it is just harder to take the step.

MY wife and I play two CDs at night, one on her side of the bed, one on mine. We have a thunderstorm CD, that has thunder distantly in the background, that's on her side. Mine is a rain CD, and basically, it's just white noise, but it works. I recall nights in the Army in Alaska, Infantry, sleeping in a sleeping bag, under a poncho and shelter half pup tent on tundra, an excellent mattress. You know there will be no bears tonight, to worry about, bears don't like the rain either. Safe, Sound sleep, and the sound of the rain just takes you away, safe, snug, comfortable.
It took maybe 15 or 20 minutes to erect the pup tent. Some of that was finding the right lay of the tundra, so you got a pillow out of it. Those CD's do it for me every night. I'm sure I could set some records for getting to sleep. I also write down the things I want to remember for the next day or so. Then I can let them go in my head, and just relax. I sympathize with your family problems, we all have them in one form or another, but if you write it down, you can let it go for tonite, ya know? You'll have it back tomorrow.
      Good luck and sweet dreams.

Put a drainage ditch around it to divert the water around the hole like you would a home with basement. A plastic tarp would also help divert any water into the drainage ditch. Lastly don't dig your shelter in a low spot where water would collect in the first place.

Where I'm from this shelter will be called a covered pond when it rains hard enough or the snow has a good melt day. If you're going to dig down for a shelter you need to start at a natural high point in the land. Or as they used to do in the old days making cellar holes, you line it with stone and mortar to keep the water from flowing in.

Yeah, the Saxons in medieval times used to do the same with their houses, dig down about 2 or so feet and start building from there. Gave them better insulation and they didn't have to build as high. They used wattle and daub sides as they were permanent buildings whereas this shelter is temporary. Great video.

Boy Scouts in the 80’s in NorCal and The Avenue of The Giants…our scout master was a forestry surveyor and we camped once a month, no matter the season. Survival training was always the best part. The stuff I learned then in my early teens has stuck with me through life. Unfortunately, a bad car accident in 1993 and a work injury in 2009 has taken a hard toll on my body; so this kind of adventure is no longer a thing I can do. I still watch these though; because when time comes, I don’t care how bad I hurt, I know I will be able to help my family.
