Johnson 40hp home made motor tilt. Outboard motor.
Made of some scrap material and linear actuator 150mm, 1500N, from EBay.
First try out.
Snyggt! 🤩
@@jonbjorkeback9499 Tack!
I like it, I had thought dual actuators would be the way to go.
Thanks.
I used two actuators from the beginning. But when one broke down I realised that it was enaugh with one 1500N.
With two actuators I think they need to be "syncronized".
@@Volvoslav Thanks, I was wondering if you synchronized them. I plan to show this video to my son and have him take a look at my small jon boat. We may want to add tilt and trim to it like this., Thanks.
These must be the 2 1000n units you mentioned?
Yes.👍
Snyggt!
Great piece of engineering work! It looks amazing! I was wondering what force/stroke are the actuators? Will only one actuator be suficient to lift the 87kg Johnson 60hp?
The force is 1500N with 5,7mm/s with one actuator and that works fine.
I think that the 60hp is more or less the same weight as 40hp.
I am going to test with a 1000N and 14mm/s to speed it up.
@@Volvoslav thank you for the answer. Let me know how it works with faster motor :)
Hi.
Now there is a new film where I modified a bit so that the engine lifts if you happen to drive on a log or similar.
I have now tested with 1000N. It works barely. It is to weak. But I think two motors would work with no problem.
there is no problem with the engine when it takes water?
Hi.
No problems.👍
I have also made new film where i have done some changes so the the engine lifts if there is a log or likewise under the water.
Hi.
I have replaced one motor over the years. The present motor is with improved sealing at the shaft. I think it has been running for two or three years now.
NautiCustomGarage
Hi.
Yes, I have tried with one actuator because one stopped working and it worked fine.
Volvoslav ok Thanks
NautiCustomGarage
I have never dared to use the construction to trim.
The water is very shallow where in my harbor, so it is mostly för tilting the motor when the water is low.
I have the actuators motor upwards as you can see in the movie. Away from the water.
Give us an idea to do home made power trim in a 25 motor suzuki
I made them from looking at pictures at internet. I cut the shape out of a 5mm metal sheet.
I was cutting almost right thru the metal sheet with the grinder to bend it by hand to the right angle. Then I weld in the open cut to make it solid again.
I have also made some adjustments as seen in my newer videos.
Now the motor can lift if I run in to a log or likewise.
Volvoslav, just wondering are the actuators still working 2 years later. Cheers Ted
Hi.
One is replaced because one of the micro switches was filled with water and was broken.
Hey Volvoslav, thanks for the reply. Did you know that you can buy a rubber boot that can go over the motor part off ebay and that will help with water proofing the linear actuator I think they are about $10. Cheers Ted Saddo.
Hi.
Now there is a new film where I modified a bit so that the engine lifts if you happen to drive on a log or similar.
Can this be used in saltwater? What are the actuators called on EBay?How fast do they move?
Hi.
Maybe. Salt water can be aggressive. The cost is low, so give it a try.
Search for "Linear Actuator".
I think the speed is around 8-10mm/s, but i you can find faster.
There are microswitch in the rod that not want to be wet. So make sure they are not in water 100%.
Sometimes is ok.

Where did you get those custom plates for the top and bottom?
Hi.
Sorry for late reply.
I made them from looking at pictures at internet. I cut the shape out of a 5mm metal sheet.
@@Volvoslav
Okay, you fabricated them yourself. I was hoping you had a company fabricate them for you and I could have some made and sent to me in California.
Thx for your reply.
It is not so difficult as long as you can measure and got a grinder and a welding machine.
I was cutting almost right thru the metal sheet with the grinder to bend it by hand to the right angle. Then I weld in the open cut to make it Stanley again.
The metal sheet is about 5-6mm thick.

Thx V, l'll check it out.👍
Has anyone thought what happens to the actuators when striking bottom at wide open throttle?
I can see a bunch of broken ingenuity. Oh sht, wipes out a lot of atta boys!
Hi.
This movie shows the first version.
In my other movies you can see that I have made some modifications to release the engine if might run in to a log or likewise.
Works perfect.
What happens if you hit a log or tree stump?
Because there is no release mecanism for the moment, something might break if you run in high speed.
We have no floating tree or logs in my area.
@@Volvoslav hi mate just wondering are they still working after 2 years thinking of doing something similar to my outboard. Cheers Ted
You lose your bottom end. I dont know if factory assemblies even allow for that
@@L2fish I had an old 135 hp Johnson late 70s probably. I hit a submerged tree stump moving pretty quick. The system has some type of release built in it because my motor kicked up.

Still working?
Yes, and works perfect.👍
@@Volvoslav Excellent 😊👍 Will use your idea on a Mariner 50 2stroke.
Think one 1500nm will do?
Yes, I think it would work. I believe that the weight is more or less the same with my motor.
But also look at my other movie where I have made some improvement because the first version with actuators did not release if if there was a log or likewise in the water.
