Even if you had a million hours to study chess from a young age, you would probably never get close to Hikaru's level. He is clearly gifted - there are tens of thousands of other smart kids who have studied chess as hard as him and never even got to grandmaster level.

A thing I noticed when it comes to competitive sports is that "generally" players don't make a living through prize money alone. It's usually from a combination of things like sponsorships, endorsements, appearance fees, etc... While that doesn't sound too ideal, that does have a way of making tournaments and such more about the "title" than the prize money. ...or the Bongcloud attack. I think Chess could have quite a online presence if people like as there's not much difference between a physical board and a digital one other than you can move faster online which would have a way of technically giving players more time compared to a in-person one. Plus there's always the chance of misclicks/mouse slips that wouldn't happen on a physical board. But online would make it a LOT more accessible because people can play anywhere, especially with the pandemic and all. Plus it would be a lot cheaper and better for time management as people wouldn't have to deal with traveling and fees associated with traveling. Not that in-person tourneys are bad persay of course as players can meet each other in person, interact with fans, play on a physical board, etc... I just mean that there's pros and cons to both but the primary game itself is pretty much the same regardless of how it's played.

There is some important thoughts on chess that make then go the way it is. It should't be, but sadly is. For example, in several countries, by majority of people, the culture of chess is something 'Restricted', for some reason (you have to be smart to play it - some people say it for example), and that make people not get interest in chess. When actually, chess is a sport, everyone has the right to participate and enjoy, that would do make the game evolve in all aspects towards it, money, social environment, etc.

If you are a U.S. chess player that is at least expert level or above, you can make residual income at playing street chess. Another way is to play unrated sections at tournaments, where we get the term 'sandbagger' that implies you are a strong player looking to scoop up some winnings against lower rated players. But that can be a mixed bag, as you may run into some masters who are doing the same thing! But all in all, you want to stay away from big tournaments, as there is way too much competition to win anything significant. If you do play at tournaments, you want to play at smaller venue tournaments. And although you won't win big prize money at them, you have greater chances of winning something. I hope that I have been helpful. :o)

This is ridiculous. If there’s a 33% withholding for taxes it dramatically reduces the winnings, and with taxes on top of that, Mamedyarov gets by with around 100k annually maybe. For a player who’s all the way at the top, ranked no2 at one point in his career, the salary is completely inadequate. Chess is a cognitively tasking game, most players don’t last very long at the top as they age. The disparity in winnings between chess and other sports is completely absurd.
Well, hardly anyone goes to watch these top tournaments in person, so the sponsorships are limited. Chess needs to go online and become like an esport if more money is to come into it.
