It's nice having our American cousins around here. The F-15's are always entertaining over head as they regularly mock dog fight. Nice little visit from the pair of Tornados also, they will be very much missed.
Lakenheath was my first duty assigned out of Tech School. I worked EMS WING CAT AGE, 1987-1990. I returned to the UK in March of 1999 during the Kosovo deployment, working C-5"s and other transports. Took a ride over to Lakenheath and in the 10 or so years it's been since I left her, she's changed a lot!! We had the mighty F-111F's back then and I truly miss them. Lots and lots of memories there for me, maybe now that I'm retired, I'll one day set foot on her again... David, when did they move the tower from the North side of the 24 end to the Southside?
Mike, I loved the F-111's on air show days . especially the day they rigged an Ardvark with a 20ft stove pipe sticking out the stern spewing aviation fuel into the jet exhaust, the flame was about a 100ft long as it did a high speed pass !! I never forgot that, were you involved on that rig, it looked a bit un-official ?
Was a crew chief at RAF Lakenheath in the mid-60s. F100D's and F's back then. Lived in old WW II barracks with John Caldwell, Sam Ascheleman (sp?), and another fellow -can't remember the name. Good times.
The P 47 looks like a 9th air force one Dave both aircraft doing similar fighting and bombing both a favourite of mine the P 51 seems to get all the glory lol
The white stripes commemorating the aircraft that took part in the invasion bring back memories. Can anyone tell what makes the little "shriek" when the F15s start their take off run please? Great pictures ,You must have been frozen though !
Not for carrier landings as some might think(well maybe in a pinch or to make Navy pilots jellious). as mezsh states below used for brake failures before the end of the runway where available. Much easier on the aircraft and pilot then a crash net/barrier.
Nice.,. Love the WWII theme on the Eagle but, being the perfectionist I am, the P-47 is more analogous to the A-10. The Eagle would be more in line with the P-51 or P-38, air superiority type. Not saying the Thunderbolt wasn't a great fighter... Thunderbolt...Thunderbolt II.,.
the A10 can be compare to the A26 or post war skyraider ;) , p47 was a good multirole plane as the f15 is , despite designed as an interceptor ,climb and go fast and high !!!! but you re right the p47 had destroy more ground targets than any other plane !!!

Still remember driving up to Downham Market only to have a pair of Tornados low level fly over as I drove over the river ouse.
Love the fighters, but ya know, watching the C-5 was wonderful.
Fantastic tribute having D-Day Invasion Stripes on the F-15!! Thank the Lord for the UK being a super Ally. Great vid, thank you DT!!
U.S. and U.K. always allies.
I miss the 'Heath. Lovely paint job
Thanks again form Holland

Thanks for your service Bob. Have you been back across the pond since ?
@@hannecatton2179 When I was a flight engineer on a C-130E we stopped at Mildenhall a few times but never to get out and explore.
Awesome, the old H barracks. Man they were awesome. I am kidding of course. I remember building those damn bunkers at Alconbury in the 80s.
Saw the “Jug” flying at Duxford last year. Great plane.
I was a crew chief at Lakenheath on E models Oct 1992 - Oct 1994
Those F15s were fresh from the factory then, I hope they fly another 30 years...
48th CRS/PMEL from Jan 94 to Jun 2000
I Crewed 111's thanks for the trip down memory lane David.
14+ minutes of Awesome :-)
Brilliant video
Thank you for such a great little clip, shared this on a FB site
That is one huge plane rolling round the building.

wow

It is the air motor that operates the reheat nozzles, the nozzle contracts until the afterburner stabilises then opens out again.
@@TimS366 Thanks for that Tim
It's the shriek of delight from the pilot......
@ 00:31 F-15 With a Tail Hook ? Very Interesting !!
Most military fighters/bombers have tail hooks. F-15s, F-16s, F-35, Tornado, Eurofighter etc... They are used in emergencies if the brakes fail.
Not for carrier landings as some might think(well maybe in a pinch or to make Navy pilots jellious). as mezsh states below used for brake failures before the end of the runway where available. Much easier on the aircraft and pilot then a crash net/barrier.
Yeah i read up on it and figured it out just never noticed that AF jets had the tail hook,
Allows them to make landings on shorter runways
Nice
Awesome. Thanks
