Served 1961-62 as an ATC in the old tower and watched many departures and arrivals on 24 & 06. It is always enjoyable to hear the sound and beauty of fighter jets in the traffic pattern. We only had the old F-100's and now look what we have. It is only a memory now, but you bring back many enjoyable times at Lakenheath.

Johnny it looks to me like it is the arrester hook which is used in an emergency to bring the aircraft to a rapid halt in the event of a brake failure on landing. The Tornado GR4 has one too. At each end of the runway are arrester cables running across it which the hook snags on bringing the aircraft to a halt. Similar to the arrested landing on an aircraft carrier.

That's what I initially thought, but wasn't aware that they were fitted with them. Thanks for the reply.

I wonder how often the F15's pop down to Wales and how many of them, at the Health last year we saw 8 F15's like this and again, there must be more located at the base
