I didn't have to dream it. In Berlin, the Soviets were our allies, and would, on occasion, visit Berlin HQ, housing areas, etc. Also, at Spandau Prison. They had unfettered access to West Berlin as we, along with the French and Brits, had access to East Berlin. Spoke with Soviet soldiers in front of Karlshorst installation, and a group of us even rode the rides at Kulturpark with the Soviets (including bumper-cars). It was a blast. My tour was 1978-81.
It was understood, however, that if we spent any time at all in West Germany (NATO), during the time there the Soviets were our adversaries.
