  • Having a look over my friends car I noticed the belt had never been changed. It was showing signs of failure and I recommended he have it changed. The serpentine belt is a fairly easy replacement with Toyota's classic design of tensioning by using the alternator.
The water pump is driven directly from the serpentine belt and having a belt come of or break could potentially cause overheating. I wouldn't limp a car too far without that water pump turning because a bad scenario could turn into the worst case scenario.
Thanks for watching! Couple of how-to videos before I can started on my own work again. STAY TUNED!

Thank you very much for this. Incidentally, my Mitsubishi Mirage/Attrage uses the same belt and has the same mechanism and I was searching how to do it for my Dad's toyota. The belt is a 6 rib PK 1230 length.

So I had a mechanic do this and my adjuster bolt broke. Iam not sure what he did wrong. Anyways I had to purchased a new bolt from Toyota and now, not sure if I trust anyone to do it. I noticed he bent the bolt, I think it was the weight or to much tension. Any advice. I think of now probably doing it myself. Any hints thanks

Trust is a difficult thing to gain with others. It's a fairly simple replacement.

He tightened the locking bolt first and then tried to tighten the tension bolt after he which is obviously how the bolt bent, either that or he just didn't know what he was doing and did it backwards when he was trying to get the belt off in the first place, the tension bolt controls the tension of the belt and the locking bolt holds it in place so when your taking it off loosen the locking bolt first and then the tension bolt, and do the opposite after you've changed the belt

Sounds like we are all taking a break from subaru's and working on Toyota's. I've got to do some ignition coils on a 4runner today.
