The thing is the technology of CGI was still not ready to make human characters without making them look strange, in this short it’s all so dark because it hides the flaws, when Pixar made human characters they mostly look kind of cartoony and not very realistic like in this short so they don’t get much in the “Uncanny Valley”
To look at it in a different light; Maybe he kept forgetting he's at an audition. All of a sudden, you realize all the yelling was due to their frustration with this guy, who can't seem to remember what part he's playing. Just a theory.

Sure it's scary, why shouldn't, someone died inside at the end of the story. Still remember back in 2002 when Kevin Mannens went to my town for Maya lecture. Good stuff.
I remember when G4 was still TechTV, they had a show called Eye-drops (or maybe it was just I-drops.) And they showed this as one of the short animations. Even at age 6 I absolutely loved this. I still do.

How did you manage to animate something that so perfectly captures the essence of a fever dream? I literally feel like I'm watching a dream of mine on playback every time I watch this and the feeling is uncanny.
@@thebongmaster most people are disturbed or wierded out by this but i feel like this whole thing has a much deeper meaning to it. Just tells you if enough people tell you who you are you will forget who you really are and become what everyone sees you as.

In the days this was made , lighting effects, motion, and physical effects were all many many steps to accomplish unlike today. All of the ease of doing in present day has been developed because of the complexity of doing them yesteryear.

Thinking that way, it's just a comedy/shock. When you realize that the 'clowns' are performing manipulation techniques that work on ANYONE, including yourself (aka, they can make anyone including YOU-the one reading this-think they are Bingo doing this) it's no longer funny.
I believe this was before clowns entered the world of nightmares. Or this was one of the first scary clowns. For me that's for sure. I found a clown frightening that seems evil and physically strong enough to carry a piano.
I did some digging on imdb. I thought evil clowns were much older, but it turns out it started in the late 80s early 90s with movies and shows like _Killer Klowns From Outer Space (1988)_ and the original _It (1990). Of course there was The Joker in Batman in the 60s, but he's not really a clown, he just wears clown's makeup.
@@Bonez0r what a thorough researcher you are.... imho sad clowns (crying harlequin clown) were invented much earlier than the evil ones in theatres. Maybe it was just an easy step for someone to replace the sadness as an emotion with evil approarch. Anyhow the contrast between evil looks and the original meaning of a funny clown is still large and working well in various dramatizations and fueled really well some costume designers and makeup artists.
It's a double fake. The video shows you the gaslighting process so you'll trust the video. Like a hustler showing you part of the trick to make you feel smart and also make you feel like you can trust them.

you remember the promotional material for this too? Mine came with an ad for maya 2.0 i think, now im on maya 2022.
While we were using Maya v2 in 2001 this was still used as a promotional piece for Maya. Brings back great memories, thanks for sharing.
