My partner is Italian but we live in the UK, I tried to talk to his family about the fact that he may have ADHD and they looked at me like I was talking in Chinese and then just started saying he was stupid 🥺
Good on you, Ashay. “I am waiting for more opportunities to prove myself.” Wow. I’m truly moved by your struggle, your self awareness and your new found confidence. Godspeed!
Thank you Aashay..you validated my experience of growing up in India as an undiagnosed child..i have been labelled lazy, forgetful, even a liability, not reaching her full potential, too sensitive. I remember being bored easily too..focused on unnecessary details. I too had low self-esteem and felt socially awkward. I still am a night owl.
But you have changed my perception on medication..my son has adhd and i am constantly looking for ways to help him..i only learnt that i have adhd after 35 years..i have learnt coping mechanisms over years but that has taken a toll on me
Thank you so much for putting up this video. I am from India but living outside since 24 years. My 17 year old son has ADHD and I research a lot for him so this has been a great help!
I was diagnosed 3 months ago, at age 52. I'm unable to take stimulants so Intuniv it is which helps w my focus. I'm struggling w getting a routine down, sleep schedule, and strategies to self-evaluate. self-regulate enough to effect significant lasting change and achieve consistent productivity. That itself only reinforces negative messages I tell myself especially after struggling all my life. Others don't understand ADHD and rather see it as a moral failing, or as me making excuses. So I signed up for workshop for ADHD self-strategy development help (4) 1 hr sessions over four weeks. It's very frustrating but at least I have a diagnosis now! That is the big rub in all of this!!! Being treated w meds and a dozen years of psychotherapy AS IF therapy for anxiety and depression was supposed to be the ONLY answer to help me. At least I can see that Intiniv helps my focus, from here on it is developing strategies to "manage" myself. 🤔☺
My doctor definitely checked my health before giving me medication and gave me a 5 mg dose of methylphenidate told me I need to find the right dosage for myself as you can’t give the dosage according to the weight
I thought atomoxetine takes 2-4weeks to be noticeable and its not a stimulant, so it shouldn't feel like the effect is wearing off after certain period of the day. Ashay's does look very hyperactive in the video, I'm not sure if the medication needs to be increased to a higher level. I'm not sure if the right dosage might make him sit still and will make his friends interpret that as a change in personality since they are not used to seeing him sit still and are used to seeing him being hyperactive.
Yes it does take time to work and yes it's not a stimulant. Halfway through the interview I actually forgot that he's not on a stimulant so that's why I ended up taking about them. I'm not sure if I heard correctly what he takes, so I could have misunderstood him. Only he will know what's working for him.
I believe he's saying that he takes 12.5mg Axepta, twice a day (25mg cut in half) by INTAS pharmaceuticals. Depending on people, atomoxetine has a half-life anywhere from 5.2 - 21.6 hours, so maybe he's a fast metabolizer? I'm also taking the same brand he takes (Axepta) and although it helps me all day, the best effect seems to be in the intial 5 - 7 hour period for me. I can still focus after the 5 hours but not as effectively as initial period I take the medication. I'm not sure if this is related to the fact that I'm taking a generic medication or that's just how atomoxetine works. On the official pamphlet of atomoxetine, it actually tells you to take it b.i.d (two times a day) and that's supposed to be the most effective way of taking the drug. Most physicians in Japan also uses the same guildline (b.i.d) when prescribing atomoxetine, which increases the drug tolerability and effectiveness. Only downside with b.i.d is the potential insomnia so it's not for everyone though. IIRC, there was a study that was comparing morning vs. late evening doses and the study concluded that morning dose was only 4% more effective. So it seems like what time of the day you take don't really matter too much. What matters the most is that you stick to taking the same dose of the drug at the same time each day in order to properly reach steady-state.
Any tips on how to better navigate the steps of getting a diagnosis? Im having a hard time organizing what I need to, for who, and which therapists have time for me and are covered by my insurance. Im sure there will be more struggles and I need some help not getting overwhelmed because I waited for my symptoms to start destroying my life before looking for help
Well, it depends. You mention insurance, are you American? I live in Wales so I don't think the British procedure through the NHS would be anything like the American procedure.
In India i went to a psychiatrist for anxiety & depression, told her i might have adhd but she refused to aknowledge it and prescribed only anti depressants, maybe she never came across someone with adhd & did'nt know about the medication.
