This episode has been a great help to my daughter’s situation. Just turned 14, has been playing on a club with same girls for 5 years, but wants to play in a more competitive league. Finding that balance between fun and competitiveness is hard. So is moving on from all the relationships built from her old team. Your perspective was just what we needed to hear to make sure we are considering the most important aspects for this decision. When you said there are more ways of being seen today and you don’t necessarily have to play ECNL, that was really helpful. Thanks and great channel!

Glad it helped! Definitely more ways to be seen than when I was young so kind of had to accept it for what it was and spend two years on another team getting recruited. Coaches were amazing and competition was excellent just wasn't best of friends with everyone. Wasn't toxic either so that helped, too. Good to evaluate each aspect and what you're willing to compromise on.

Don’t forget about the Parents role in this as some can be emotionally delusional about their child and it effects the way the kids enjoy the game.

I (not my daughter) worry about exposure and not growing with her current club, but she is happy with the team. I often have to listen to this types of talks helps me calm down. 😂 thanks.
Plus, I’m still hoping for she will go back to track and field where times matter and not exposure because you’re at some fancy showcase. Or cross country, where independent performances / winning will qualify you into bigger meets so you can get exposure. Sometimes I feel like some people talking about soccer recruiting on social media is no difference than a high school popularity contest.

If she is happy that is great! 😃 Tough to have it ALL - best friends, competition, amazing coach. Sure, some do and those people must be grateful. Good to get clear on your end goal or what you want out of experience and what sacrifices one is willing to make. My journey was far from perfect but in the end, I can look back and overall, it was a rich, amazing experience!

Did you play other sports in Middle School/High School? What age, if ever, should you drop the other sports and concentrate on soccer if you want to go on and play in college? My daughter mostly focused on soccer with a little basketball and flag football. She is going into 7th grade in the fall and wants to play every sport. We are encouraging her to do everything she can. She is currently on a travel soccer team. Suggestions?

Yes! I did a ton of sports - football, baseball, dodgeball - all in the neighborhood with my brother and his friends, all of which helped my athleticism against tougher competition in soccer. I also played travel and varsity lacrosse up until about 10th grade, then I had to make the decision to ONLY do soccer since the overuse of soccer and lacrosse in the same season was too much. Multiple sports is great, especially young (before age 13/14) and recreationally, AND when done in a separate season, but if it's serious and year round and overlaps other sports seasons, can get bad with injuries. I was lucky that lacrosse was more of a summer sport and soccer was Fall for a few years, then it all switched to the year round model. That's when I had to make my decision in high school what to focus on. Try to lean toward one sport each season, perhaps one travel team and more of a rec team or neighborhood. Travel soccer + rec basketball. OR, do sports in same season that don't overuse same muscles and movements over and over (i.e. soccer and softball, or basketball and snowboarding, or soccer and volleyball). I recommend the book The Athletic Skills Model :) I think it's amazing your daughter wants to try other things!!!
