Well done. That work knife is a beast of a knife. I use mine in my yard all the time and it has held up very well. And it will slice through thick leather like nothing. It is a great work knife. Great for the price.
"Great value...not the best materials in the world but, hey --they do the job." I think that was the most spot on assessment of the Rough Ryder brand, I've heard in a long time. You said in 38 seconds what most people take 10 minutes to get to! I've got that same pattern whittler in Black Pearl. It's one of my favorite whittlers. Correct about the Bolsters. 440a Stainless was THE industry standard steel for the better part of the 20th century yet for some reason its suddenly junk! LOL. People have bought a bunch of industry hype chasing the latest greatest steel for a knife their going to open envelopes and peel apples with! The work knife is pretty decent. My bet is the micarta might have shrunk a bit. As you said in the beginning: "not the best materials in the world."
Dude! I'm 1/2 listening to this video in the background while paying bills. Then out of the blue I hear "Liberace's butt plug". Ah ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! I can't stop laughing. Effing hysterical!!
Yea rough Ryder are by far my favourite brand of knife. Yea the materials used aren’t as good as some others, yea they are made in china but look at what you get for the price you are paying. I have 6 knives from rough Ryder and 5 of them are every bit as good as case knives that are 3 times the price, my 6th ones isn’t the greatest but I’ve seen more expensive ones come just as bad, at least my rough Ryder was £20. My rough ryders do everything my more expensive knives can do, maybe not hold a good edge as long but for the price I won’t even consider complaining. If I lose it im £20 down, if I lose my £100 knife im going to cry and £100 down. Rough Ryder definitely deserve more love. I see a lot of people hate on the company that have probably never even owned one or have but use it for the wrong job.
I got the blue swayback as well and I really like it. It's a great knife, but I can't get over the fact that it's a rough ryder. Yes I'm a knife snob and I can't do anything about it. 😆
I understand. I do have fancy knives as well but I really enjoy the value for money you get with rough rider. Yes the 440a isn't the best for edge retention but it's fine for the small everyday tasks. The t10 carbon is actually pretty good for the money.
@@feeltheburr521 I don't care about the steel. I have and use the Chinese imperial and Schrade knives and crkt blades and they have some 13cr whatever steel. And it does the job. It's just the brand name that... Yeah there's a difference between RR marked knifes and EVERYTHING ELSE on the marked. I still would choose RR over non branded Knives, but if I have a choice between a RR and Chinese bade bucks and bokers for example or the new imperial and Schrade stuff made in China, I'd still choose them. But that's also because I personally think that RR's often have weird and over the top esthetics. For example I'm currently all over my newest ebay acquisition : a old Camillus electricians knife. Mega poorly made, gabs everywhere (like for real. Everywhere where 2 pieces of material are meeting), but looks and works great. The liner lock works as well after a little bend. Really digging this knife type and brand. And yes the RR is better bade, but again it's the brand itself and the rest of their knife models with weird esthetics that bug me. The RRR common man stockman is cool though. 👍 That's a great one.
I hear you about the weird esthetics. RR has a bunch of diverse target markets, from kids buying their first knives to folks who make jewelry from miniatures, to serious knife people on budgets. Maybe they should have separate brands. I enjoy dignified but weird patterns like the pipe doctor and boxcar whittler - but not the shiny heart-covered kid knives or girly pink ones or giant bowies. I want a well-made traditional knife, and RR makes them. You just have to ignore the kid stuff. After all, we all started collecting somewhere, probably with goofy, undignified kid knives.
Hi just found your channel and have subscribed, thank you for two very comprehensive reviews of these knives, very interesting and informative, I have been looking at the whittler this morning and I think your review has just pushed me over the edge🤪and will order it shortly. Take care Sam Ps the RR Wharncliff is already on the never ending to buy list🤣
You're welcome. I hope you enjoy the new knife. Also check out my latest video the tag response. It shows the RR sea horse whittler which is a fantastic blade for a mobile whittling knife.
@@feeltheburr521 Hi thanks for that, I have the RR Seahorse Swayback RR1741, which I think is something similar. Since I have replied to you, I am still a bit undecided about the Whittler and you touched on the problem there it might be a bit small but thank you again for the review. I have been buying a few different Barlows at the minute, also arguably the best knife I bought recently is the Rough Rider Congress Red Worm Groove ( RR2055), a full size , 4 bladed knife, all different, have a look at that if you can. I will be going through your backlog of videos tonight and will comment in due course Thanks again Sam Ps great that is a great name for your channel 🤙🤗
The trouble with these rough rider knives is there garbage!!! Let me explain, while they look good they are not up to the job. My swiss army Spartan has served me for well for over 25 years in the building trade. But I decided to retire it due to the blade being worn out due to years of sharpening. So I got a rough rider knife and doing the same work as my sak the rr knife lasted a year or so. Save your money and buy a decent knife, not these Chinese pretend knives !!!!

Ok, the "Not looking like Liberace's butt plug." comment had laughing! Definitely earned my sub. lol 😂😅
I whish you would start making videos again, I have watched all your videos multiple times and quite enjoy them. Kind regards Cliff.

I have both as well and they are fine every day pocket knives.
I agree, I think any wittler should be carbon. When you’re going to be sharpening as often as you would whittling, it only makes sense.
