I’m a lifelong Bengal fan, and this was the first draft I watched (up until the Bengals picked anyway), I was 10 years old. I will never forget what my dad (a Giants fan) said when the Bengals took Akili Smith, “well buddy, the Bengals finally did something right”… God, how wrong he was 😂😂
I remember a Chicago sports writer writing a pre-draft article titled "Daunte's Inferno Could Become Cade's Charade", basically saying that Cade would be garbage and Dante Culpepper would be the better QB. I was hoping he was wrong, but man was he spot on. Yet another Bears first round QB bust, but that streak finally ends this year.
Tim Couch #1. Wow. Theisman actually got it right in his criticism. Kiper, as he often does, missed. How can so many people overlook the massive amounts of INT's he threw in college. What did they think, that the NFL would be easier for him? And Akili Smith? What on earth did anyone saw in him. I was stunned that he was even considered a 1st round pick back then, nevermind the #3 pick overall.
When Mike Ditka still had some credibility as a coach… the only worse decision than what the Saints did was Cleveland not taking that trade. They could have moved up from 12 to 7 and taken Champ Bailey, had the first 2 picks in 2000 (trade down for more picks) and stayed patient and traded picks for a higher one the next year over the next few drafts. Instead they ended up with Tim Couch
Plus their #1 and #3 round picks the next year. Cleveland was insane for not taking that deal. Possibly could have gotten more since Ditka would’ve been guaranteed to get Ricky and not worry about the Colts taking him. They had a chance to dominate the draft for the next decade by trading picks for a higher round next year and being patient. Instead they got Tim Couch 🥴
Its absolutely crazy to me how Michael Bishop got passed over by teams when he was 2nd in the Heisman Trophy race and had more skills than any of the other quarterbacks in this draft

@@alexkain8564 So how come he didn't do crap after college? If you say someone should have been drafted higher or not be passed over time after time, it's because he proved them wrong in the NFL. Otherwise, they were perfectly correct in passing him over.
@@Paul-cj1wb He got drafted by the New England Patriots and was there at the same time as Drew Bledsoe and Tom Brady. I heard he was told that he was “too athletic” for the quarterback position and that they didn’t know what to do with him because of his talent. He beat Donovan McNabb head to head in the Fiesta Bowl and McNabb was drafted a lot higher than he was for some reason
I have to give him credit for the last video I watched, when he ripped the Rams for taking Eddie Kennison over Marvin Harrison, and for them drafting Lawrence Phillips
1:33:08 Joe Theisman youre not gonna win a lot of games at quarterback in the national football league running as much as Steve McNair did. You cant run for 560 yards and take your team to the next level. Michael Vick and Lamar Jackson certainly proves him wrong
Theisman is brutal during this broadcast. He sounds like that guy who reads one draft preview magazine while sitting on the can during his lunch break and thinks he’s an expert. Yea, he could certainly play but that clearly doesn’t translate to recognizing talent in this case.

"They have a back in Skip Hicks that they really think has a chance to be a great back." Oh, and they also have some dude named Stephen Davis.

LOL. What did he say the year after? 🤣 I couldn't believe he was even going to be drafted at all.

An entire draft.
And they called it “cheaper than expected.”

That’s just ridiculous that not only what the Saints gave up to move 7 spots, but it was considered a great trade at the time. What? 🤯🤯🤯
Colts were playing Chess, Saints were playing Go Fish
To be fair they were able to flip Williams for 2 first rounders
It's funny listening to old Mel Kiper. I've enjoyed listening to him but how is he colossally wrong so often?

That’s Akili Smith spiral was something else. Tight ball. Lost all of that in the NFL.
This one is just plain painful to watch in general.
