For a short time - and much against my will - I ended up moving to coastal Mississippi with my father. I'd heard about the kind of hate, racism and ignorance that characterized "the South," but to actually SEE it, and to actually see how self-righteously hideous these people were, was a great shock. I left there after several weeks, to go live with my mother in rural upstate NY, where she had gone to be with her family. Same god damn place. The same ignorance. The same racism. The same hatefulness. Good "conservatives" all.
Definitely a similar hate in the rural areas, but at least a good part of upstate NY is akin to the “blue collar rust belt.” They vote Democratic, and while they are more prone to have prejudicial views than a liberal city, they don’t literally think slavery was cool and evolution isn’t a thing like large areas of the south.

And while they all blame Democrats for ruining the state and driving people out, I actually left to get away from all the Trump-voting bigots. Granted, the south is still probably more conservative overall and people down there are more likely to openly say they don't like black people. Truth is, Americans love the South. Actions speak louder than words. When the South tried to secede, the country mobilized to keep it in the Union.
