- a friend sent me these tracks so i could jam with the original DEEP PURPLE rhythm section, Ian Paice and Roger Glover. i now remember why i hate singing and playing this song at the same time. it totally kicks my ass. SO INTENSE. it was a lot of fun and actually hurt a bit. hahaha. ROCK'N'ROLL!!

"Gee, what's he gonna do during the organ solo?"
How about blow our damn minds.
Actually I prefer this song without the organ solo
@@ruyjimenez4317 The organ solo is the most important part of that song for me but the guitar is a great substitute here.
@@silentzero7 ouu yeah ....
Yeah I agree. Satch does the same thing in Chickenfoot. Sounds awesome!!!
Yup
My god, how is it humanly possible for one man to not only to sing this song in the original key (hard enough), but then also play the guitar parts like Ritchie Blackmore? 😱 (Live and at the same time)... Respect ✊
And do the keyboard parts too😲❗️👍
Was this jammin with or jammin to? it's jammin to and a copy to a like a t, well done.
Nobody could scream like Ian Gillian. Not even Dio could do the proper scream.
Not bad for a 57 yrs old. The real deal.
@@joeysplats3209 Thank you
Just ridiculously good. I honestly don’t think there is anyone else who can play this well and sing so brilliantly at the same time. He’s just an all round, rock star.
Best guitar player alive!
Phil is such a badass! That "keyboard" solo with the arpeggios was super clean and killer! He nails the vocal too!
Playing at a really high level is one thing, but the whole thing becomes instantly better when you can see the guy enjoying himself and having so much fun.
THIS! It's so easy to see Phil loves doing this and it's hard not to enjoy this.
And singing.
George Lucas Yes. Singing as well. Thanks George.
He’s brilliant.
Wow! Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Gillan and Jon Lord in one person.
i knooow, right! what planet is he from... ha! planet x, i guess
Indeed. Never listened to anyone do this and do so good.
Phil is a force of nature... plus he's clearly fun
to work - everyone wants to hire him :)
btw. there is no way that Blackmore could play on guitar that Organ solo like this guy did. Not back then, not now.
...and Glenn Hughes too! 😳
When Phil played John lord solo was amazing!!!! Just wow!!! Great musician amazing performance.
I have watched this at least 100 times! that smirk when he knows he just crushed that solo
That's the best cover of ANYTHING I have ever heard.
wildfisher WORD! 👊🏻
A lot of Phil X covers are kinda mind bogglingly amazing. The guitar solo in this is just stupid hard.
Chickenfoot did a great version too.
I enjoyed that.
Awesome guitar Awesome vocals. Love the fact it was one take and the little errors that made it real. Too much fake perfection on RUclips these days.
Kudos for a fantastic performance.
That “organ” solo though… that was crazy
He's so happy after he pulls off the Hammond solo, and rightly so. I love it.
Holy shit that was awesome! Reminded me of the frettedAmericana days! 🤘🏼
He blew the damn top off that thing! Love the energy
I miss the fretted Americana days
Sidenote: no ones mentioning how amazing your VOICE is!! Damn dudeee killer
Agree! How many people can play like this and sing like this?
Great voice and great and extension. however I am of the idea that as a second voice, as a timbre and as an interpretation, sambora was of another level.
@@AndyDion maybe John Sykes - but there are really a few ones.
@@skyscraper7474 I don't think that Sambora has PhilX's upper vocal range though
@@backslash68 well, the world is nice becouse is various.
What a talent Phil is. The picking..,insane.
This reminds me of when I was 10, watching Phil shred Blue Suede Shoes in our buddy Andre's basement birthday party. Andre's Mom kept trying to get me dancing with the other kids, I was mesmerized even then and just watched this huge talent. True story.
This guy put as much into playing in his basement as he does playing MSG or Wembley in front of thousands of people! Here he’s covering the parts of Blackmore, Lord AND Gillan! Incredible! If he was born 10 years earlier he’d be a household name- Page, Eddie, Eric etc...
Wow, that first lead break! His take on the original is refreshing, and better.
I just realized, after years of watching Phil, I think he is my favorite “rock star”! He has the looks, he has the chops, he has the voice, and he has the outrageous sense of humor. The total package.
Steve Martin get a room you two ! (Only kidding, he is great !)
I'm not a bon jovi fan...but he's the real deal...very creative...
Me too
@@stepitupandgo67 having Philx in Jovi is like driving to Tesco in a Ferrari.
Your creeping me out
The king. He’s been playing this song for decades. He’s played the solos anything from the original to over the neck tapping to string skipping. Never plays it the same. Simply the best.
Amazing. The first solo just blew me away.
Everything was “Phil-nomenal” as expected BUT the biggest surprise for me was the organ overtones you produced at 2:55. Pure genius!
This dude's freakin' ringer !!! Smh.....
I'd love to see the guitar skills of those who thumbed this down..
It's Blackmore and his pack. 😁
I'm sure they're jazz snobs
Probably relating to the misleading title
it's at exactly 69 tho lol
Exactly. They're purists or idiots. Either way.
Phil is by far the best of the best. Nobody can sing like Ian did in his 20's , play effortless like Richie did in his day and do it with a smile and with no effort. I wish I would have met Phil 20 years ago. God Bless you brother. You also have a wonderful bubbling personality. You remind me of a friend I had growing up. You deserve all the Happiness from life that life has to offer. You're Great !!!
What I love about Phil.... he's "one of us" that actually made it. Even though you're playing the big stages with the biggest hair band of all time, you are STILL a rock and roll kid who plays in front of his mirror and imagines himself as the rock star he is in real life. We all live vicariously through you, my friend. Rock on with your bad self.
Never gets old......People just know that Phil used to do this song over 30 years ago in his dad restaurant in Mississauga Ontario Canada and OMFG!!!!! Was like you have never seen before MAGIC!!!!!
That's awesome! Would be great to have had a video of something like that. But we'll take this one!
The guys no short of amazing... I seen him play with Frozen ghost and Triumph back in the day.. and Lou if you're in contact with him there was this one bar band back in 87 I used to see come through when I was living in Sudbury I'm more than positive he was one of the guitar players... it was a band from Montreal I do believe called Strike Force.. they had the stage prop I almost want to say like a scorpions tribute...😎🤟
This mofo can really play that's for sure!!
@Racer X You play it w/ some fire and passion! And record yourself to share. THEN we'll talk. Geesh!
Throw the bum out huh Racer -X-
This is so true I used to be there on Sunday night it was amazing to see Phil and Kojo
Triple threat! Gillan, Blackmore AND Lord! Love the alternate picking arpeggios on Jon's organ solo. Shit man, the whole thing is just straight-up awesome. Phil XXX!
I'm exhausted just from watching this. What a performance!
I don’t know what was more impressive! the Vocals or the Guitar playing. Both mesmerizing 👏
Back in Mississauga Ontario Canada about 30 years ago we used to go watch him on jam nights at the Erindale Station ,and I always said this guy is going places. I loved watching him play then and still do. Phil your an incredible talent thanks for putting Mississauga on the rock and roll map,we're all so proud of you!
Hands down my favorite rock star! Phil is the personification of all things that are the golden age of guitar rock - energy, talent and fun to watch. Thanks Phil for doing what you do!
Grew up in Mississauga and some him in his 20's. still the same hilarious ball of fire. I have worn a badge of pride for Phil for 30 years. Crazy talent, humble, hilarious and goes for it all of the time. Do you wonder why he gets call backs...
This is what we want, ROCK 'N" ROLL!!!! Amazing!
I've played this tune about a thousand times and it never gets old, always rocks the roof off. Especially when performed with a gifted singer. Now Phil played this one as I expected he would on guitar. But to sing it that fucking good and play it? I have to give him great respect there. Awesome goatit Bro!
The face he makes when he absolutely crushes that solo.... Phil is a madman from fretted americana to this masterpiece 👏
Went a snotty prep school growing up, and the senior class could post quotes along w their class pics. Most chose pretentious excerpts from poets & philosophers, presumably to broadcast how erudite, wise and insightful they were. Except for this one guy, who posted the complete lyrics to this song. One cool guy in the whole senior class, and he drove an old Shelby Cobra Mustang like McQueen in Bullitt. Big fat tires and everything. Kick ass cover, BTW. One of the best driving around in traffic w the radio as loud as it’ll go songs in history.
Excellent version. Best 6:24 of my day!!!!
Holy S*** DUDE! Masterful playing, on this song from one of the best rock albums ever created. Thanks!
Marvellous !
When I want to be blown away and have no money , I come and watch this , again
I watch this weekly...... and still find myself sitting here amazed and out of breath at Phils skill levels!!! Freakin AWESOME!!! 🤘
same here...
Whoa there! SG-tastic! And that voice. The world needs more rock stars like Phil.
I don't dare to imagine how many hours of practice you had in your life, but the result of all your efforts are just mind-blowing. What a performance and what a voice!!!! THANK YOU for sending this to the world.
Waking up in Perth to this! Just incredible. Off the charts great.
Oh, I am so happy for this. Thank you very much! I feel as happy as when I am listening to Driving South, with Mr Jimi.
I love watching Phil play he genuinely just loves playing and having fun doing so 🤘
Great Version! Satriani used to play the John Lord solo on guitar too. Keep up the amazing work - this brought a smile to my face
1. singing and
2. playing guitar AND organ parts
Of Hiway Star
in an absolutely amazing way!!!
You are my hero!
Every time I've watched Phil X, I leave with a stupid big grin on my face! Love it. Thanks, Phil!
PS I think Ritchie left those 95 thumbs down...
The 'Made in Japan' opener ist the best opener of a live album of all times...what a pleasure

"What we've got is a new song....and this is likely to remain our opening number for a year or so.".....yep it did! :D
Nobody does this cover better than you, Phil. Always outstanding. 👊🤘🤘🤘🤘🎸🎸
Is my head on fire? I think my head might be on fire! So badass!!!!!
Oh, Ritchie Blackmore and Ian Gillan rolled into one, I hope he's not torn from internal conflicts. 😆Very cool - one of the best covers. 👍
Awesome Phil, someone please get Phil a headphone extension cable so he can Boogie Woogie around.
Although you've toured the world with some of the biggest names,,,love how you're so down to earth and real. From one guitarist and vocalist to other,, you're playing abilities and talent is very inspiring love your energy keep sharing thx Phil
Bravo, bravo, bravo👏👏👏❗️ Even the soles of my feet are clapping too😅❗️
That Lord solo. Blown away already!!!
Nooooo shit. I love the one-take, straight thru jam, in head phones. Just like trying to learn it as a kid. Your vocals were just as amazing as your picking, maybe more so like you say, doing them both together. Thanks for this.
Phil you blew me away with this. TOTALLY KILLED IT. Yeah!
Everytime I watch this it just blows me away!!!
Never fell to knock the piss outta a song!!! Bravo my brother!!!
Love These Home Concerts... Phil It's Shows How Talented You Really Are 💥💥 🎸💥💥 " More "
Incredible performance, considering most people have a hard time just remembering the lyrics.
One take, LIVE off the floor - a la, KING EDWARD! AMAAAAAAAAZIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNING!!
Absolutely killer!! But most importantly, Phil is clearly having fun!!!
First solo is insanely clean! Great music as always!
Absolutelly amazing performance both vocally and technically!
Nothing but rocking brilliant 🤘🤘🤘AMAZING noise machine execution 🎸🎤🔊🎶🎵🎶🎵👏👏👏👏👏👏
I expect nothing less fom the Philster. What an intense guy. Always. Rock on dude, you're a legend.
Amazing voice. That solo. Dude u never dissapoint. AWESOME
Shiiiiiiit that was INTENSE indeed. Everything perfect, organ solo was something else.
to hit those high pitched gillanesque notes and play these solos !!! Chapeau 🤩
I know we should take inspiration from this and the whole "wow! anything is possible with time and effort!" .... ehh, I just wanna quit after witnessing a grown ass man I've never met subconsciously tell me and physically show me every single flaw in my playing. Here's what you can't achieve... all joking aside this dude blows my mind every video I click on. The fact that he's so damn humble too is amazing.
Jesus that was awesome, Killer Ian smooth type vocals. Love the little things in the guitar parts. Awesome guitar tone too. Just killer!
Love to see you “fight in focus“ and succeed delivering this great track in one take singing and playing at the same time. This is true Rock 'n' Roll spirit and the opposite to all these fakers out there. Thank you for this stunning performance. You are an amazing singer, by the way.
This is the first video I've seen in 10 years of RUclips where I want to give never ending thumbs up!!!!
Born in 66 and nailing the vocal high notes!
You know, I've been following you for about ten years now, and this just became my favourite clip of yours
Amazing. I give you 3rd best ever honors for your vocals. Ian Gillan's original vocal is first, followed by the still mind blowing Glen Hughes, who still performs this song easily at his age(almost 70). For your performance, however, you get a big 1st place for nailing the vocals and guitar both, even handling the organ solo. Good God you seem to have ALL the talent! Sick performance. Thank you so much!
2:41 --- Ooops ... Love the acknowledgement smile and look over! Awesome!
Rick Beato sent me here and boy was that a good suggestion. The keyboard comp was just outstanding.
Dude just killed it all! I had chills!
Love the transposition from Keyboard solo to Guitar as this was simply awesome. What makes you real guy is you know you’re a true professional musician when you realize you almost missed the bridge and we all do this at times, but only for a Millisecond With a quick smile of humanness and nearly flawless that a lot of people did not catch it while watching the video.
I only point this out for the musicians that get down on themselves for missing a part as it can happen to anyone at any level of playing can miss but it’s how you recover that makes it beautiful
Well done
Ritchie would be pissed!...That's when you know you're a BADASS 👏👏👏👏
Monstrous absolutely monstrous. I can’t stop watching this just a different class.
Good, Holy, Schmoly! Give me a second while I pick my jaw off the freakin' ground! Ha! Smokin'!!! Vocals are top notch and you can play anything on the guitar!! Whoa! Has me yearning to pull out Machine Head and play it... Loud! Now, to pick out which air-guitar to play....
el sg en manos correctas! SG in the hands of someone who knows how to play....Rock!! Saludos de Panama!
Damn! Just Damn! Cant beleive he did all of those parts at once and his tone. You can tell that's all amp and guitar, guitar volume and his fingers. Just incredible!
The "happy kid face" he makes when he nail the organ solo!! :D :D :D
Pure rock and roll energy...... Keep it comin' Phil
Wow...I knew you were a great guitarist, but damn boy, that was some sick singing... go Phil X
Phil, you are quickly becoming my favorite guitar player and lead screamer...U are the man...
As Ozzy would say, Don't stop!
Nice job!!! You really nailed that organ part. Truely in the Purple spirit. Thanks for that marvel of rock!
Intense it was! I was having my muscles twitching over here, damn. Great performance, I also had a big stupid smile throughout.
Wow! Hats off, Phil! Playing the guitar and the organ parts altogether with great singing, just wow. I am a fan of the original song and never really liked any cover I've heard but you nailed it and more. Better than the original. 👏👏👏👏
It was great, but better than the original? Nope. The tones and sound of that album, plus Jon's mighty Hammond are unbeatable. Bloody good job though Mr. Phil! Please do 'SPEED KING' or 'CHILD IN TIME' next.
@@ronnienose8608 Maybe I got slightly carried away haha!!
@@Steedonline Haha. No worries. It's pretty impressive what Phil can do. Singing Gillan's vocal lines isn't easy, thought he was going to pass out at one point when his face went very red. Love to see him do Speed King and Child In Time.
Been watching this fella on RUclips for years... never fails just amazing talent. Respect Phil 🤘
The Best performances of highway star on the guitar of the whole wide world !!!!
Your energy is amazing dude - thank you for sharing this - monstrous
Good on you! I really love all these vids people are putting out for our entertainment while we're locked up. And you sound better than ever, man.
Damn dude, how have I not seen this video before now (Sept 2023)??? That was epic! Up until now, I’ve always considered Chickenfoot’s live cover of this was the best with Joe Satriani tearing it up. But he didn’t sing, Sammy did. So for me, this take ranks right there next to Chickenfoot. Effing outstanding Phil 🤘🏻
That was absolutely sensational. If Deep Purple did a tour with Phil in front and centre and side and back, that would be fine by me. Bravo
